Celtic-Juve after two previous tight encounters

1074

Celtic will play Juventus in the last 16 round of the Champions League.  Juve are seven points clear top of the Italian league having won the competition last season without losing a game.  They eliminated reigning European champions, Chelsea, in the last round and finished above a good Shakthar team.

They are remarkably well organised and don’t lose many goals (10 in 17 league games, 7 less than anyone else), but this is a tie Celtic can plan for.  Juventus will present the same kind of challenge Barcelona did in the group stage, but they are not as effective as the Catalans.

Celtic have faced them twice in the European Cup/Champions League previously, winning both home games and losing away on each occasions, controversially in 2001.

I’m up for this one. Fairy-tale story with the lovable Celts the only British representatives in the quarter finals? Loins girded.

‘Due to the level of demand for the CQN Annual orders received between now and 2pm Friday will be sent special delivery to ensure they arrive on Monday 24th. Last chance for the Christmas stocking filler, get the CQN Annual here!

  1. I will be honest and admit that I am not entirely happy with the draw – not because I feel that we have no chance: we did beat Barcelona after all, and scored three goals against them in 180 minutes.

Juve ARE a very good side – well organised, sound defensively, quite physical but also have technically gifted players like Pirlo and Giovinco. However they are not unbeatable – a few weeks ago they lost 1-3 at home to Inter.

What worries me is the reputation of a section of their support, and the (in)ability of the Italian police to provide adequate protection for Celtic fans in Turin – I have seen how they operate at close quarters.

Another worry is the appointment of the referees for the 2 matches – we need 2 strong ones.

Since the draw I have spoken to several Italian friends – none of whom support Juventus – who ALL said, and I paraphrase: “Hope you hump the b*******!” One even asked if I would be over in Scotland for the first leg, because he would like to go to the game – Inter fan.

The new Juventus stadium has a capacity of only 41,000, so our ticket allocation would be no more than 2,000 – anyone going, please exercise extreme caution.

Apologies for the doom and gloom – but I dont trust them: the fans I mean.

    HH!!

  2. I was all wound up for going to the away leg this round and my dad was going to come …… I really dont want to expose myself to this level of risk to be honest and will probably leave it …… we better get through!

Thanks for the reality check Tallybhoy. Your language is very eye opening. Hearing from a pal about his bus getting bricked almost had an adventurous tone to it.

…. and I would class Juve as the only other team I have a soft spot for :-(

  3. Ryanair – and every other airline – ALWAYS bump up their fares just after a CL draw.

    Despicable!

  4. Raymac – Philvis, I have a 1935 bullhead Bentley, complete with strap thingies for the bonnet and stuff. I believe it’s known as a “Blower” Bentley. However I don’t like the wire wheels. I ran over a flock of some peasant’s chickens the other day and it was the devil to get the feathers from the wire.My chauffeur Max is not happy about. Nor is the peasant.Aunt Maud sent me a pilot’s helmet complete with goggles for my birthday, and now the local peasant farmers are complaing that their cows are calving prematurely due to my appearance.I’m up before myself tomorrow(I am the local RM)and I would appreciate help from someone of your social standing.

I am an expert on befriending the lower classes, so you have come to the right person.

Invite them round for a kitchen supper one day. Be sure to put them at their ease though, which means you have to provide familiar foodstuffs and ensure the conversation doesn’t go over their heads.

That means no swan’s liver pate or talk of hunting the most dangerous game of all – the unemployed – on your private island.

Instead, have your cook whip up pot noodles and builders tea, and ensure the discussion revolves around topics they will appreciate, such as The X Factor, tattoos, and celebrity vajazzling.

The added benefit to hosting this type of feast is that the good silverware is less likely to go missing. (thumbsup)

Tallybhoy – I do not wear gloves for driving – but Massimo my driver does.

Never tried a pipe – well I did on several occassions when I lived in Mexico for six months in the late 70s. If I remember correctly I had a wonderful time.

Astonishingly, a photograph of your Mexican adventure has survived:

The airlines don’t automatically do this. It’s due to how their system works as flights are automatically priced at e.g. £10 for first 10, £20 for next 50 or so, and moving up in price as they fill up. It’s understandable that as fans try to get flights that the prices will go up exponentially.

it takes a long time to get to the champions league.. Honesty, integrity within your club helps..

I notice the ammount of posts slaughtering radio snyde has increased lately. This ties in with the pro hun panel, which includes soup takers, upping the ‘lets get rangers noticed’ stakes. Its the only way they’ll get listeners, by sucking up big time to the dead club, as many tims have turned off long since.

I’ve been guilty of sneaking onto it and I did so last night. The show has gone beyond ridiculous and last night Walker came across as a hun apologist, even when an informed caller had him on the ropes. I wont even begin to mention Beavis and Buttheed (you know who they are). They are part of the dumbing down process and are frankly a total embarrassment to broadcasting.

Snyde has well and truly nailed itself to one mast. Turn it off for good.

  10. Mort

You may well be correct – but it has been my experience in the past that as soon as Celtic were drawn against Barcelona (the last time, not this year), and Milan, fares for flights to Barca and Bergamo from Prestwick with Ryanair rose within minutes by several hundred %.

The same is happening as we speak.

In the eufa dry run yesterday we got Juve and arsenal got bayern, it almost looks like a fix, surely not.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

During the draw programme they said today’s draw was exactly the same as yesterday’s dry run, so fix ……just one helluva coincidence ……. What odds would we have got on that happening …..LOL ……VERY pleased with Juve….

Having lived in Turin for 3 years, and saw Celtic on their last visit in the Stadio Delle Alpi, I notice the local police have a tendency to treat us as “English Fans”, expecting a hooligan element. Just ignorance on their part. I did however sit amongst the Juve fans (close to the centre spot) and had no trouble, even celebrating when we scored. Anyway, this is a brilliant fixture and one that we can overcome. Really looking forward to a couple of days at the foot of the Alps and seeing the bhoys come out with a result. In bocca al lupo Celtic, HH

Sorry if I have put you off going to Turin for the Juve game!

Just want every Celtic fan who does go to be safe, and to be aware of the dangers.

Remember what happened to some Spurs fans in Rome a few weeks ago.

Apologies again for the doom and gloom!

    HH!!

  14. I take it tickets for Turin will be in short supply? They need to give us 5%, about 2,000, and I assume they sell out their new stadium unlike the old delle alpe.
