Celtic Park developments and what is needed next

443

I was at the Allianz Arena when we visited on Champions League duty this season.  There are many reasons to like the Munich stadium (although navigating back to the bus was not one of them), but stadium lights were like nothing I had ever seen.

Not only do they illuminate the Arena to a near-daylight level, they can instantly flash on and off, creating a spectacular pre-match lightshow.  Tools like this improve stadium atmosphere as well as providing a more striking event for TV viewers.  Celtic Park will be transformed when we install these lights this summer.

A new hybrid pitch (part grass, part plastic) will provide the very best surface available anywhere in the world.  It will be durable and bowling green-smooth.

Money will also be spent on the roof, which is the Achilles heel of the stadium.  The design is prone to leaks and makes it difficult for public address and wifi systems to effectively reach spectators.  A seven figure sum will be spent on the roof, but we need to realise a fundamental rethink is required.

As international tournaments reached Netherlands, Poland, Ukraine and now Russia, closing roofs were installed at stadiums.  This increases attendance, game-experience, time inside the stadium and makes the game attractive to new attendees, who would never consider sitting in an exposed wind 147 steps in the air.

This technology has never been more affordable and is the norm from Kazakhstan to Cardiff.  It needs to come to Celtic Park.  I suspect those who sit in the South Stand do not have a full grasp on the match day experience of those in the upper sections of the rest of the stadium.

Of course that’s me making the wild assumption that UEFA bothered to check the SFA recommendation to grant the licence…

  2. TONY D…..

Don’t know if you still lurk but I met a mate of yours today.

His family has the fancy dress shop across from the old mc nees. Said to say he was asking for you and are you still a cantankerous old git. ;))))

  3. If T-1, T , and T+1 refers to last year, this year, and next year, how can they possibly even consider that Sevco will break even on aggregate over this 3 year period ?

Of course, T-1 etc could be something totally divorced from what I’ve suggested.

As one well known poster might offer…….who would win in a fight between T-1 and T+1.

You’ve got it in one. T-1 results were a loss of £6,663k. T isn’t known yet but they reported a loss in the interims. So T+1 is gonna have to be a cracker of a year…

It stinks, which why I’m nearly done with the game. I’m hanging on by my finger tips naively hoping the CO report will deliver a just verdict and that the new SFA CEO will actually do some thing about it.

  5. Sipsini,

Should I even ask what you were doing in the Fancy Dress Shop, knowing whose company you have been keeping this week.?

Hope you’re both well, and give our love to Miss L ?

Now all we have to do is persuade Craig Levein & Tynecastle bawl & frothers.

    …..

Personally, I’d rather have adequate & secure parking for Celtic fans than flashing lights or even & posh hotel. The parking situation is medieval, although then it would have been “look after yer horse mister”.

And if they have accepted promises of debt for equity exchanges in the future then they have ignored Annex X, Section E of the regulations.

Whatever way you cut it the process has been fudged…

  8. Seems to me the only way they can break even is if they don’t get drawn against some Luxembourg Footballing Giants, and make it through to the Europa group stages.

Draw will be interesting. Not holding my breath on anyone in the media calling this BS out for what it is.

Plus ca change, as those crazy Canucks once said…….

I think the ‘plus ca change’ thing was from Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr… from France… which, last time I checked is not in Canada (and I would think I would know, being one of those crazy canucks!) …. although, admittedly, I may have the world’s worst sense of direction

  10. I’m not accepting that that is the end of the story with the hun license, it just can’t be that easy to cheat your way through UEFA..

Welcome developments Paul and all, are the Big Screens being replaced as well?

Apologies if this has been asked and answered before, just logging in now, hail, hail!

  12. Uefa licence is a glorified self certification scheme.

After all the stushie over 2012 & Res 12 a note would have been attached to SFA’s provisional nominee list.

Since then, King has fan danced his way around TTP & Court of Session so that he was gifted a private media conference on Monday then a soft ball Q & A in a prominent comic pretending to be a newspaper.

Since the SFA submitted their provisional list, that club have paraded one of the highest profile characters in football as their manager AND announced a rights issue “of up to 6 million”.

We all thought the Gerrard mince was to sell more season tickets – but the real reason was to persuade the SFA & Uefa that they had access to the sufficient finances to remove any doubt about their FFP credentials.

The SFA have done the “right thing” by flagging up some uncertainty about them initially. They have all the deniability they need when things go mammary vertical with that club.

    Just an opinion CSC

  13. Scrolling back the last couple of pages and realise that there’s now just 23 hours left if I’m going to renew. Hmmmmmmm….

Good to meet you again last night in the stauners section. I will maybe renew my season ticket tomorrow, or maybe not. Think it will be the former though. Any sign of an extension to deadline day like last year. Want to wait till the last day to renew. Keep the board on their toes.

  15. Guys,

Of course it makes sense to renew. We’re even getting a fantastic light show flung in.

  16. Any cup final goers fancy a lunch and beer/wine in Coias then a taxi over the Hamdump for the game?

Frankly, when it comes to corruption, the SFA are small fish compared to UEFA and FIFA.

Here is a link to a recent article on the MEP’s frustration with teams and bodies regarding misconduct.

    http://www.europarl.europa.eu/news/en/press-room/20170926IPR84723/uefa-and-fifa-officials-accused-of-being-enablers-of-a-corrupt-system

To be fair, as far as I am aware, there have been more charges of direct corruption against FIFA officials than UEFA ones…

The cheating in Scotland is small potatoes compared to the corruption in football worldwide ….. although, the Scottish problem is not just about naked greed, it is tied in with sectarianism, which compllicates matters somewhat…

However, in comparison, the problems in Scottish football were small, identifiable, and, in my opinion, relatively easily contained, and dealt with … had there genuinely been the will to do so.

But someone in the room had to be prepared to stand up and say that the King has no clothes … or in this case, Dave King has no cash….

If the rumours on the ground here in the home of Uefa are to believed, then the governing body of Euro Football has been in the pocket of some shadowy figures for quite some time.

It makes sense of course, a huge cash rich business is a perfect platform for all kinds of skull:))

Scotland is always going to be small potatoes but that doesn’t lessen the crime and that kind of sectarianism doesn’t exist here thank God:)) When Basel were on their 8 in a row run I searched the media for articles on How Swiss Football needs a strong Grasshoppers or Young Boys, none to be found:))

My hope that we would see a clean up in our game is fading fast and to be fair to the Swiss they did on the surface anyway clean up their national game, except when it came to benefitting their national team but that’s a story for another day:))

They don’t call Switzerland anti team Albania B for no reason:))

The Beautiful Game is dead I’m afraid…

Had to write in after your dig at the Grey Brigade in the South Stand.

Far from being the cushiest billet in the ground, it is sadly lacking in several basic areas.

Last night for example my seat was soaking as per usual when it rains. The state of the toilets is more suited to Hampden circa 1910 rather than the Allianz Arena!

The catering is more Greasy Spoon than Egon Ronay!

Normally I don’t complain too often but at £640 a ticket, the club are starting to take the mickey!

    Starry …

For the reasons you have touched on, I have had to reconsider what football and Celtic means to me ….

Football is no longer the world’s game, the beautiful game … it can have its positive effects, and on its day, it can produce some beautiful moments (on the park, or with friends in the stands…. ), and I can enjoy it as such …. but now it is first and foremost a business…

As for Celtic, when Tommy Burns said ‘when you were playing for Celtic, you are playing for a people and a cause’, we all, intuitively, knew what he meant.

I dont think that is the case today… maybe, with respect to the people, but not sure we could agree on what the cause is.

    Celtic has changed,

As long as I accept it for what it is, then I dont get too stressed about it … it means that the highs are no longer as high, but the lows are not as low …

(although I still enjoy seeing the zombies fans in distress)

  24. £4 million for new floodlights… I remember visiting Scotland in the early 90’s and reading the DR. On the back pages it had news of Rangers (RIP) signing a new sponsorship deal worth millions… inside was a story about Celtic buying second hand floodlight bulbs from Hampden which was getting re-developed. That was a point where I thought we might never challenge again… Thank you Fergus

I met one of the Rush lads once (not Geddy Lee .. one of the other ones …) at an event .. he actually seemed like a decent guy… but, as you say, not my style of music

now.. Shania Twain …. a true Canadian talent.

  26. someone commented earlier, is this our biggest number of no-score draws at home in a season. with a degree of “its not good enough”.

well so far we have had

18 home games, winning 40 point, with 11 wins and 7 draws scroring 38 goals for a loss of 8, and barring an Aberdeen win on sunday then for me thats a pretty good home record because we go unbeaten again. 2 full seasons in a row, i dont think thats been done before.

Lets compare with what i think was our real worst home season in the league in my lifetime.

1989/90 – only 2 seasons after winning the centenary double we managed to be aflicted with

    18 home games , winning 6, drawing 6, losing 6. scoring only 21 goals, losing 20.

in that season our longest winning run at celtic park was 2. In october.

    our 18 games sequence

    WDDWWLDWWLLDWDLDL

our draws came against Rangers, Motherwell, St Mirren, Hibs, Hearts and Dundee, Bizarly all were 1-1 scorelines.

Our losses came against Dundee United 0-1, Rangers 0-1, Motherwell 0-1, St Mirren 0-3, Aberdeen 1-3.

We failed to qualift for europe for only the 2nd time since 1962.

We lost the cup on penalties to Aberdeen.

So on reflection from that low point, this season is in our top 20 Home seasons.

    Get some context.

  27. with these new stadium developments, does that mean we could host a euro final.hh.

  28. missing a digit

    WDDWWLDWWLLDWDLDL

look at that last 8 games, 1 win, 3 draws, 4 defeats,

for some reason some dont appreciate this wonderful time to be a celtic supporter.
