Celtic set for HJK Helsinki in Champions League qualifier

679

Celtic will almost certainly face HJK Helsinki in the third qualifying round of the Champions League.  The Fins are 7-0 after the first leg of their second qualifying round against KR Reykjavik.

HJK were the first team to beat Martin O’Neill’s Celtic as they overcame a first leg deficit in the 2000 Uefa Cup to force the tie into extra time.  Chris Sutton scored late to prevent the tie going to penalty kicks.  HJK are also top of their domestic league after 17 games, so will be a well-oiled machine by the time the arrive at Celtic Park on 31 July or 1 August.

You can’t force players to sign until they’re good and ready. What quality players want to sign only to play in the SPL?

We’re not in control of the situation the players and their agents are.

I agree the SFA have marched back 10 steps from the 1 step they took last year and have lost a great deal of respect across Scottish football in general but mostly with fans. Possibly in the conference rooms of power in UEFA too(don’t hold with the corridors thing).

Inevitable consequence of a BFA is a British football team.

Would be interesting to know if Scottish Celtic fans would be happy with that.

My gut reaction was always ‘no way’ but if I engage my brain for its once yearly outing I may be a bit of a hypocrite on this one.

I always support GB in athletics, golf, tennis etc because that is the scoping of ‘my team’, but it is Scotland in football, rugby etc.

My friends, colleagues, family here in Ireland support Ireland in football, rugby, athletics etc but the boundaries vary across states, not just parts of a state.

I might just be happy enough supporting a GB team rather than Scotland.

Funny thing is that as much as I hated the Rangers/Scotland element to home games(flounced in 88 and only came back to games in 94) the English have a similar issues between club fans which adding Sco/NI/Wales might make worse.

Bit of a ramble(sorry) but has got me thinking!

No, I didnt answer K’s questions. They were intrusive and irrelevant to the issues being discussed.

It spoke volumes for K and a n other that they wanted to make things personal rather than debate the issues raised.

it’s a pity some are willing to sink so low, dont you think?

  4. I’m beginning to think years of protectionism from the MSM has made the horde intolerant to reality. The recent series of stories that have broken, even if they have diluted the real truth somewhat, has hit them real hard- the huns blue bus has just smashed head on into the concrete bollard of reality, and they are dazed and dumbfounded by the impact. They have just not been prepared for media outlets reporting anything that resembles honesty about their clubs nefarious and criminal activities. The old days are gone and they are finding it difficult to cope.

It reminds of when the Berlin Wall fell. Even people in the East who stayed only a short distance from West Berlin were largely ignorant of what was beyond the Wall. The reality beyond could only be imagined, like a sort of dream. When the Berlin Wall came down and those in the East could freely enter the West they didn’t like it. It frightened them. The experience of democracy excited a certain fear and they interpreted freedom as a sort of lawless chaos.

Now of course those days are forgotten. But the huns seem as though they are in that state now- bewildered, fearful, paranoid and overwhelmed by events.

I hope Ive got this wrong but…

Daft wee new huns playing in division 3 for how many years it takes to get out of it then division 2 and maybe 1, should they manage to climb up to join the big boys will this not be funded by decent ibrox crowds while they pay lower league wages?

If the daft wee new huns are starting from scratch, not ilable for the tainted ex club’s debts and paying low wages while getting a decent crowd will they not be able to save a bit for when they join the big boys in the SPL?

Im guessing the daft wee new huns will get sponsorship and I see BBC Alba are covering their glamour league game v Brechin City (Second Division Champions: 1982–83, 1989–90, 2004–05) how much do the SFL or the new dat wee huns get for this tv deal?

I think they’re taking this one season at a time. Another fix will be put in place for the following season to aid thems along the way. It’s Scotland after all.

  7. It’s just been announced on Five Live news that Der Hunnes have accepted a one year transfer ebargo to commence on Sep 1.

I take it this is public knowledge and I’m just behind on this development?

Yet another chapter in this total disgrace that is Scottish football governance

No wonder it took 3 days to come to this .

10 mins for sevco to tell the clowns at the SFA what they wanted and 2 and a half days to try and explain it away to the rest of the mug punters of the other teams .

Scottish football has hit an all time low tonight but there are a few more days to drag it further into the S**T

They have sold under 500 season tickets. So your decent crowd theory is hitting the buffers right away.

It takes about a Million a Month just to run ibrox. How do you do that on Third Division crowds and income?

  14. Peter….’very strange ‘ yes totally agree very strange? Hun in wolves clothing perhaps?

You called for this a while ago now.

If I was Ian Black’s agent, I would be looking at £8000 a week at least knowing they cannot recruit next summer.

  21. lennon wont rock the boat at celtic,he will want to sign 2 players ,but he cant, he is quite happy managing celtic ,if im being honest right now i have this gut feeling ,that this season is going to be very boring, and truth be known i and this is not like me ,but i wish i didnt renew my season ticket,i blame the board at celtic for not having the ambition to sign some quality players ,and hopefully get a good run in the champions league, but then thats the directors at celtic no ambition with a lot of things ,not just football, look around celtic park a dumb not even decent parking facilities for starters.fed up you better believe it . and another thing charity begins at home,
