Celtic set for HJK Helsinki in Champions League qualifier

679

Celtic will almost certainly face HJK Helsinki in the third qualifying round of the Champions League.  The Fins are 7-0 after the first leg of their second qualifying round against KR Reykjavik.

HJK were the first team to beat Martin O’Neill’s Celtic as they overcame a first leg deficit in the 2000 Uefa Cup to force the tie into extra time.  Chris Sutton scored late to prevent the tie going to penalty kicks.  HJK are also top of their domestic league after 17 games, so will be a well-oiled machine by the time the arrive at Celtic Park on 31 July or 1 August.

team claiming to represent ‘britain’ playing their first game…

Theres a lot of it going about.

  2. Whilst I agree a transfer embargo is accepted by Sevco, as has been reported should last the stated 12 months; I believe for it to start on the 1st September to be the best time.

I believe it is the best time as they only have six weeks to secure deals for any new players. With no money, hardly any season books sold they will find it very hard to persuade Clubs to sell without putting cash up front, players will be reluctant to agree to play for them for at least three years in the lower Divisions but most importantly what Agent would recommend to their Clients to sign for a Club that will be playing in the lower divisions for at least three years.

If the embargo started now, ran for twelve months it would expire around 20th July 2013. By that time, they may just be in Division Two, they may just have got their finances in order and just maybe in a position to buy a better player for their assault on Division Two.

Whilst they can sign players now until 31st August, I do not believe they will get enough in, or at least dare I say the players they really need or want.

The are a lame duck and will be for many a year.

By not starting the embargo, which was the originally punishment until 1st September I believe is the best result in terms of an embargo. They cannot approach a player or a Club until January 2014. Hell mend them if they are caught approaching Clubs or tapping players before then, given their track record, which is non-existent. In fact, the only tapping they will be doing is handing round the begging bowl.

When considering whether the date the embargo begins, we should consider the strategic picture and not the short-term.

Maybe they could launch themselves as the lame orcs.

I think the years suspension on transfers is a good thing ( as long as its carried through) they have the squad to get outta div 3 so when they need to reinvest in better players they can’t do it. Simples.

I was going to write a big reply to this post but in the end I couldn’t be bothered.

If someone has such entrenched sectarian ideas as to what a protestant is I don’t think I’ll be able to enlighten him.

Just remember the overwheming majority of Scottish football fans expressed their views on Rangers over the past few months much in line with the view of Celtic fans.

It’s rubbish as expressed in this post that makes these other fans think of Celtic and Rangers as two sides of the same coin.

I agree to an extent but it’s more than that.

The average hun has a siege mentality and an inferiority complex.

It’s something akin to what the loyalists went through in the 70’s across the six counties. The prods didnt have much either at the time, materially wise. They would have had just cause to demand better housing, jobs, wages etc. But no, that didnt concern them as much as having more than Catholics.

As long as they were better off than Catholics it didnt matter how badly off they were.

Huns in Scotland have the same mentality. They cant face up to the reality of their situation because the reality is too painful for them.

The Hun has to continue with the pretense otherwise their fantasy world they have created for themselves falls apart and with it the dawn of realization finally bites.

They’re predestined notions of superiority, that right of birth, is false.

Take that away from them and their very existence is brought into question.

  8. According to some on here a team Neil Lennon has been building for two seasons is not up to the job of getting by Helsinki. They must think Neil is not the right man to manage Celtic then.

  10. In relation to the SKY TV deal surely a big corporation like Sky must extrapolate their own numbers and so realise they are getting a fairly good deal from the SPL, particularly concerning the audience pool generated by Celtic- I mean even a fairly stupid person rarely makes mistakes when it comes to money. Why then would Sky,a large profitable company, with all the numbers in their favour, make a mistake in not backing Scottish football?

For a good lie to work those promoting it have to believe in it just a little.

Ive said he has identified players he needs for improvements the next season so yes the squad built over two years needs improvements as the manager admits. Thats not a doubt on the manager its going along with his thinking, but since you raise it I hope he is upto the task that is CL qualifiers.

Am I old-fashioned or don’t you support Celtic no matter what?

And what is more: this present squad should be good enough to beat any team we come up against in the qualifiers unless we revert to self-sabotage- hopefully that is lessened by the departure of Cha, Maj & Loovens.

  15. If Newco do play at Ibrox next season, they will, initially at least, attract big, big crowds as the Bears will need to prove their “loyalty”.

Neil and Peter have dovetailed very well and will do everything in their powers to bring as much success as possible to Celtic. We have a clear road ahead of us to really develop our young players whilst preserving our Top team constantly for the big games. I think timbhoy2 has been reading too much MSM and as I said, I think he will be pleasantly surprised by Celtic this season.

I fail to see how you could arrive at the conclusion I have sectarian entrenched beliefs concerning Protestants. That’s simply not true.

    obviously misinterpreted my remarks.

    Anyway, it’s all about opinions.

We agreed on one thing, a Celtic Membership Scheme that embraces the body of our support regardless of creed, colour or race would be a force for good at a time when so much uncertainty lies ahead in the Scootish game.

  19. Estadio, I just dont see the point in rushing someone in just now. I would bring a bit of quality in if we do qualify for group stages. This team as demonstrated last season can win the SPL.

I remember visiting some of the hun sites last season when we pounded them 3-0 in the last Old Firm game- they just couldn’t bring themselves to admit that we had better players, or that we played better or even played the best football. Giving us credit for anything was a step too far in their weird, sinister and bitter wee world-view…as though as soon as they admitted it the whole elaborate edifice of their over-simplified sectarian fantasy would fall down and crush them like smurfs in a mushroom house.

Tend to agree with your assessment – they are not an attractive proposition for any player or agent.

Sign a one year deal and the player gets to walk before the embargo ends (no transfer fee) – no replacement unless under 19.

Sign a two year deal and the player gets to walk when the embargo ends (no transfer fee) – replacement will cost fee and/ or wages.

Sign a three year deal and they will have to sell the player during the embargo or the following year otherwise he walks at the end of the deal.

If/ as they move up the leagues they have to step up the wage bill – any youth player that shows value will need to be sold to cover costs. By my reckoning it will take them 5 years minimum to trade-out of the embargo!

Unless of course – they have a rush of like-minded volunteers prepared to sign-up to the cause. :-(

I disagree, I think they will be lucky to get 30,000 for their first game. That is a massive crowd in any League but it will quickly dwindle to about 4 or 5000.

There is no way they can run the Big Hoose from div 3.

The Hoose is going first IMO and a new 30000 stadium will be proposed some where.

The thing that really beat Rangers was Celtic getting 10000 more supporters every game.

So when they downsize to a 30000 stadium they will be the irrelevance they really are.

    So true.

What I dont get is they have a Protestant culture at the club which is nothing to be ashamed of in itself.

Vast majority Of Protestants in Scotland are good honest God fearing people with characteristics anyone would be proud to have regardless of colour, creed or race.

    The question is this.

Where are these decent prods that are in such plentiful supply within the Rangers faithfull and why dont they speak up against the direction the club is taking at every turn during this crisis of theirs?

Have all the decent prods deserted them or are they just too few in number to make themselves heard.

It beggers belief for a club so entrenched in the dignity theme that in their time of greatest need that’s what’s in such short supply.

    Truly bizarre.
