  1. Perhaps someone can put me right on this, in previous Europa Lge did the first three teams in each group qualify for the knockout stage and has this changed?

  2. macjay1 for Neil Lennon on

Kayal has taken a number of head knocks recently, including a broken nose in Sydney 6 months ago.

Sometimes instincts ( self preservation ) kick in before rational thought.

Feeling very positive about our teams future prospects, even after this reversal in what can only be considered to be a bonus competition.

Delighted to see many others feel the same way.

As you asked, I can be arrogant enough to answer that for you :)

You grew up watching MON’s Celtic “conquer” Europe, and notch up SPL trophies.

Only, that’s not exactly how it happened. You don’t remember the horrendously dull games the MON’s team played, because, despite that, they got the results. MON had the benefit of a renewed Celtic Support with full ST sales to back him up, and better TV money as well.

Lenny is operating under extreme financial restrictions in comparison. The beauty being, he has taken on young players with a view of development, and the proof, again shown tonight, is that, that progression is working.

Closer to Jock’s approach than MON’s was.

It’s another Celtic era in the making. Appreciate it and enjoy it, or it will pass you by.

  4. Just back from Parkhead. Disappointed but not crest fallen. Sunday is way more important and after tonight we may be missing two of our most influential players and that’s even more disappointing.

  5. Happy enough with tonights result if you can be happy with a defeat at home. One wee question why take Stokes off when we needed a goal, surely when Brown came on it should have been Ki who was hooked (I thought he had a terrible game)

  6. neveralone says: 21.17

If Wanyama was injured then why replace him with a forward? Paddy McCourt could have played a midfield role tonight.

  7. Celtic played well tonight against a very good team.

Neil Lennon was right to praise his team, the experience will do them no end of good. Hope Wanyama and Medley are okay for the weekend.

A little luck and we could have been in front in the first half hour.

I was next to the Green Brigade in section 113, their influence is spreading and that is a good thing, they are a credit to the club. That is the closest I have been to them and I didn’t sit until half time, knocked. Constant support, singing, encouraging, everything the team needs. They should be proud of themselves.

    I’m proud of them.

Come in you Bhoys in Green!

  8. 67Heaven ... I am Neil Lennon..!! Tick Tock !! on

I’ve watched a few Europa games this season……really quite a high standard / exciting stuff

Think we should log that one on the memory board. Hopefully we look back in a couple of years time and recognise the prophecy.

And you need a wee bit of rain to appreciate the sunshine… or a wee bit of silence to appreciate the thunder

“but the decision to replace Wanyama with Hooper was just so wrong it’s difficult to fathom how the manager arrived at such a plainly stupid game changer.”

what was the score before that substitution, and remind me how it finished, then explain how that decision was a “plainly stupid game changer”, he was replacing an injured player.

Now, if he wanted to change the game, he would have swapped ki for anyone else on the bench.

  11. tommytwiststommyturns on

I know the weather forecast wasn’t good, but what a ridiculously poor turnout for a game against last season’s EL winners. There were some quality players on that park tonight and there could have been a few goals.

I’m just starting to warm up after freezing my nuts off up in 408, but at least I wasn’t soaked unlike some (cor blimey Penfold)!

Really happy with how we were coping against a very good team in trying conditions, but the goal seemed to drain our confidence and AM never looked back. I really feel we deserved a point out of that tonight, but we just didn’t have enough quality throughout the team.

Sods Law, just as we get Broonie back, it looks like our most consistent player this season took a bad one.

Anyone got reliable information on Joe’s injury?

Hopefully he won’t be out for too long and Big Vic will be fit for Sunday.

Did Kayal really duck out of blocking the shot for their goal?

  12. The flick from Samaras in the opening minutes when we were well on top was stopped by a miracle save by their ‘keeper. Might have been a different game had that gone in.

  13. Big Packies Accent

I do agree with you though, if it wasn’t for silly individual errors we’d probably be through by now

However, coming third in the group (if we do…) is not bad, considering Udinese are challenging for the Serie A title and Atletico Madrid have spent mega bucks in the transfer window usually come 3rd or 4th in La Liga

To come ahead of Rennes, a team challenging for Ligue 1 in France is an achievement in itself

    Definitely a meeja thing, eh.

The same attidudes would be found here once the surface was scratched, but more generally against the Irish. Anti-Polish and anti-Asian racism is here for sure. IMO it’s a tie between anti Irish racism and anti-Asian racism as to which is more prominent here. If the general hun community realised the Polish were generally religious in a way that they find offensive, the innocent Polish would be targeted even more by the evils of hunnery.

It’s crucial for the establishment to keep us under control using these “attributes”. Many think Murdoch and co rose to dominance by encouraging these divides. Aye, they did, but at the request of others who have owed them favours since. Maybe those favours have ran out and Murdoch is too big for his boots, but he will be replaced soon enough (if not already – more likely he has actually – by the BBC, perchance? :)). Somebody wants rid of Murdoch and my cynicism tells me that any person with the power to do so, hasn’t earned that power by fighting for the rights of society.

  15. Murdochbhoy

Thats true but not sure Paddy would have helped the balance.

Fair enough to disagree with NL but only thought the language you used was more strident than the situation/decision merited.

  16. Overall I’m pleased that we gave Atletico a good game, they are a far superior team technically but we did not disgrace ourselves- far from it.

Putting Hoops on at HT was a risk, maybe it should have been Broony?

No coincidence that the Spanish were impressed by Sammy, he had a great game, as did Beram.

Onwards to Sunday, even without Joe and Vic I am still very confident we will get the 3 points. I’m not confident Rangers will win on Saturday though!!

Firstly – I didnt “grow up” watching O’Neills teams.

I “grew up” watching McNeills, Bradys, Macaris teams.

It did help me appreciate O’Neills teams though.

Secondly and lastly – you seem to be under the impression we are building something because we have young players – let me display some arrogance on this occasion – because it is you that needs to “grow up” if you think we are doing anything with these young guys than ‘asset management’.

You infer you believe the likes of Hooper, Matthews, Wanyama, Kayal and Izaguirre will grow old together.

    I wish – you dream…

How about that – thats as close as we will get to agreement together tonight!

  18. PADDYS MARKET AT 21.10 Dont know what game you were at if you think Matthews had pass marks!!!!!! when he had the ball and distributed it he continually gave it to the other team. And please dont respond with he is only 19 and learning, if he is good enough to get a start in a celtic team he should be capable of punting the ball into the 1st row or the 21st row, rather than give it to the opposition. As for Glenda, Dan the man, they can go at any time of the month for all I care about them, along with double FF, thats all he is a big diddy.!!!!!! Thse players are all right for the SPL, but when it comes to playing better teams, aka, the likes of Athletico, they are found trully wanting. Get rid of them is my cry, and any celtic supporter worth their salt will back me up on this to the hilt if we want to compete in europe. There were other players tonight who never delivered the goods, but who are capable of holding their own with the likes of madrid, when it suits them. ffs, If I knew the answer to this problem we have with some players, I would be sitting in the dugout. if my granny had baws and we had put one of the 3 or 4 chances away that we had in the 1st half, I might not be writing this all too familiar keech., but alas, naw,, I want us to win every game that we compete in, just like every other celtic supporter, but we have been looking at the same old problems for the last so many years. sick as the proverbial……………..

  19. Just in, sitting in the fire trying to thaw out!!

We were worthy of a draw, Sammy my MOM. My word how bad was Ki? Was Wanyama injured? Hope Joe’s injury isn’t a bad one.

Win in Italy & were through. Easy!!

  20. tttt

Wanyama has a dead leg and doubtful for Sunday.

Not that it matters but Porto won the Europa League last season.

Get a wee warming half down ye.

Think the 18.00 KO is a real problem. Id guess another 8-10K if KO was at 19.45.

I really struggled to get to the game arriving 20mins after KO.

  22. Evening bhoys!

I thought we played really well sammy in particular.

Confident about qualifying from the group.

Seems to be alot of twitter action re IRA chanting this evening seems the vanguard bears are compiling a video and sending it to UEFA

Confident that everyone was on their best behaviour couldn’t hear anything on the telly

Let’s not forget we were disadvantaged by taking a fourth seed’s place in the group when we should have been a second seed. We should have had one of the poorer sides in our group rather than Udinese.

Exactly mate. That Sion tie has still damaged us

    Oh well :)

Can never be happy when we lose, disappointed we didn’t take something from the game. Actually we can take quite a lot from it. The fact is we can still, in theory at least, qualify from a very decent group, and we should be pleased with that. Whatever happens I think playing in Europe has benefited us as a team. Let us push on in the league for a couple of weeks.

  26. In pub drunk, verily proud of team.

That was an SPL team it was a win by 5 or 6.

A day like that Sunday, Win by 4 or 5.

I filmed them , it’s on youtube now, if I can figure out how to link it I will.

  31. Night night, can’t wait for D utd, I feel we’ve real options ( fingers crossed) in the team now, not mention real fight.
