  1. Have to say it, a very disappointing night. But we move on.

Of course this is a meaningful fixture. Any European competition is ultimately where we will he judged outside of Scotland.

Let’s put it down to a bad day in the office and hopefully it’s a one off.

    HH.

  2. Greenpinata…disappointing yes….instead of the knee jerk we’re pish…let’s give Ange the time he wants/needs to put his team together….then we can comment

  3. The Lurking Tim,

No knee jersey here. I’m on the Ange journey.

That doesn’t stop me being disappointed on the night.

If I’m ever not disappointed at a Celtic defeat then it would be my time to call it a day.

    HH., the journey continues.

  4. A new morning, an early start and back in action in two days. We could do with a return to form.

I didn’t write off the conference previously but I fear it’s just too much football at a crucial period.

One game a week give or take the Scottish Cup will benefit our league form.

Our two biggest games in the next few weeks are Hibs and Livi. My goodness we’re overdue a performance away to Livi.

I suspect last night was a bad day at the office and we’re capable of turning it around but you have to ask the question of whether it’s worth the effort and investment given our priorities.

It’s time to move on from last night and give priority to what could be a huge league winning run of games. We can focus on Europe again when we’ve got the champions league to look forward to.

  5. European football is the prize for winning the league. It is the benchmark outwith the bubble of Scottish football.

It would be folly in the extreme to undervalue the merit of football outside Scotland.

Eventually an insular focus will result in downsizing.

We MUST compete on two fronts without prioritising one over the other.

    HH.

  6. Firmly disagree, GP. For me it is only about priorities now.

Where we out of league running then yes, the conference would be the focus but we’re in a title chase.

We have finite resources which we need to expend wisely. The Conference is not the benchmark of our season.

Going through next Thursday would mean little to me if we then took a tired team to Easter Road and lost. It would mean eff all to me if I’m very honest. In a season where winning the league guarantees you the champions league then it’s fairly clear were our priorities should lie.

  7. An Dun,

    It is fine to disagree.

Just watching Sky News where the huns are being lavished with praise.

They have had more good publicity from that one game than they would get in winning a multitude of league games.

European football raises the profile, which impacts on transfers, sponsers etc etc.

    HH to you.

  8. Good morning CQN

Always acknowledge when you have been beaten by the better side, Bodo Glimt were the better team on the night and fully deserved their win, no excuses

As has been pointed out earlier our defensive record in Europe this season and last season is lamentable, last night the Norwegian champions slick fast attacks were clinically finished our defending was woeful most notably on the left side of the back four, the truth last night was simply this Angeball was done better by the Norwegians, a big strong athletic team who are very well coached, they confidently executed a disciplined game plan pressing/defending man to man limiting us to few scoring opportunities, whilst we lost shape and defensive discipline allowing their attacking runners to punish us, a big dose of reality from outwith the very limited SPFL world, I was very impressed by Bodo Glimt

Great result for Sevco last night and another timely reminder from last night that wrestling the league title back will not be easy, never underestimate any opponent Sevco will get a big dose of confidence from such a result, cup finals in the league every game till the end, our No1 priority going for it all many be costly when no margin for error exists

Good to catch up with some ole CQN people at the corner last night

  9. I havent read back too much, but I have NO COMPLAINTS.

Celtic were beaten by a better Team on the Night….maybe a better Team on ANY Night ?

NO lack of Fight from The Celts, but sometimes you need more than that ?

Even IF hes Fit enough to play an Hour in the return Leg…..I would NOT RISK wee Kyogo on the Norwegians Plastic Pitch ?

    We move on to Sunday.

    HH.

  10. I watched the 1st Half of Dortmund v Huns game.

DESPITE being AWFUL in the 1st Half, Dortmund still MISSED Two SITTERS…and to be fair the Huns missed a very good chance when Barasic decided to shoot from a tight angle instead of cutting the ball back.

it wouldnt surprise me IF Dortmund scored a couple at Ipox IF their MAIN Man is back ( HAARLAND ?), However I thought they had a very poor attitude overall in that 1st Half…MAYBE they were a bit too ARROGANT ?

    Who knows…I certainly dont ?

    HH.

  11. Good snowy morning all from a very white and chilly Garngad

Spikeysauldman from last night, he is staying at my daughters in Moodiesburn so he can cause a riot oot there.

St Tams – Snap I dont go to see the Candy as often as I should though. The bhoy and a few of his pals go more regular than me and in between Celtic games.

    Bring on Wheeks Dundee.

    D :)

  12. Anyone have a link to Dortmund Quick News? Would like to see if their defeat was attributed to Angeball, Rogic n O’Riley, Jota, fitness… or are they just blaming Greg Taylor.

  13. That wasn’t a 3-1 game. I still thought we were slightly better team for most of it. We had lots of underperformers, in descending order: Jota, Taylor (not good enough), Rogic, Juranovic, Abada and Hart. CCV, MCGREGOR AND O’Riley were good. Starfelt and Maeda OK. Every year we come up against lesser ranked teams who have good big (mostly black) athletic players. Could we please have some. One aspect we must improve, we hardly score at corners and free kicks, yet get loads of them. We’re probably out and huns probably in, so a wee positive is less games (though I’d much prefer to be in).

  14. Reading through the comments it seems that we struggle in European qualifiers because we’re still in pre-season and the opposition are match fit. However, last night we had a disadvantage because we were fatigued and they were well-rested.

We need to just be honest and say we’re a long way off at any European level – unless UEFA wants to make a 4th tournament for us to drop into :)

No overreaction from me though – we’re making good progress and I think we’ll take it out on Dundee this weekend. Come the end of this week, we’ll be top of the league – eyes on the prize.

  15. Defensive frailties and poor at set pieces.

I suspect we knew this before last night.

The rebuild continues. Important to be honest about the progress made.

Hopefully, all opinions continue to be accepted on CQN and fewer personal attacks.

The next game is still the most important

  16. Tough night last night where you would struggle to come up with one player who got pass marks.

Like everyone else I’ve been hugely impressed with Jota this season , but even he was largely anonymous last night where his end product was non existent.

Abada had one of those games where he did

Very little and looked out of his depth.

Also Rogic had for me a complete shocker where offensively did nothing but more frustratingly was pushed over and bullied defensively, which ties in with one of my biggest frustrations in that we really lack strength, height and athleticism something our opponents had in abundance.

When the recruitment comes in the summer we need to address those issues especially at LB and DM areas.

On a positive note football can work in very strange ways and I would not be surprised if on Sunday we are 3 points ahead as I can see them dropping points in Dundee.

If that’s the case the pain from last night will be worth it 100%.

It’s all about the league !!!!

  17. Lots of reasons why we lost last night but for me it was straightforward, they were bigger, faster and stronger all over the park. I think Ange underestimated them, playing both Rogic and O’Riley was a very bad decision.

We needed running power to close them down and close up the gaps in the midfield, Rogic and O’Riley too similar for my liking.

Not the end of the world but I would think we won’t see that starting 11 again this season even against other SPL teams.

  18. onenightinlisbon on

STV news reporting that “Rangers” defeated the favourites for the Europa league last night…….

  19. If Celtic beat Dortmund last night ,they to would be getting plaudits from the media, look at our own performance last night ,one of these nights it happens, but our defence needs to be looked at in the summer,

Agreed but this was a comment when simply reading the scores out for the two games last night.

    Totally not needed…

  21. Lessons learned — AP Ball is a high wire act.

Needs the whole team to be on their game or it falters.

Easy to counter if you win your individual battles.

They were the tighter / more engaged team by a country mile.

We were performing at 80% — which leads to awkward moments in the SPL or even ScCh level teams.

Too many in the squad are desperate to play the TFOD2.1 every week.

We are still a squad that hasn’t settled down — too many are playing for themselves.

I fear the loan guy we want has other plans.

And the loan guy that want’s to stay is not wanted / too dear.

They are an effective team not a great one.

10% extra effort / intensity and their confidence would vanish.

There is a reason why they came 2nd in a EuCon group.

    We made them look good.

The team played the game in Testimonial mode.

Everybody in the team failed at one or more levels.

JH — looked to be in training ground mode.

JJ — cat on a hot tin roof / in and out of the game all night.

CCV — unsettled at times and his playing out from the back wasn’t up to their energy.

CS — After getting up to the required speed for the SPL he collapses when up against a more complete / confident team. At no point is he worth the money PL paid for him.

GT — Totally lost / horrible performance at every level with no desire to recover.

CMcG — Poor game in front of the defence / he is not a defensive pivot / he gets drawn forward when we have no cover and they run through us time after time.

MO’R — Had some moments but not a complete performance / lacked energy too often.

TR — Totally off his eggs / they worked a number on him and he couldn’t respond.

LA — Some moments but not enough drive towards the box and some individual poor moments.

DM — Totally lost until we put in a good cross / Very weak performance.

JNPF — Bouncing up and down like Tigger to no great effect / attempted shot was half hearted.

RH — Needs to improve on his focus / good followed by sloppy.

GG — Needs to improve the intelligence of his play / didn’t respond to their better play.

Defence — Sub standard SPL performance / didn’t adjust to their extra quality.

MF — Missing a proper DM / low energy all night.

Front — No spark / no class / little desire.

Overall a trainwreck — the only people who were happy were the bookies.

  22. Next Thursday could be a fun evening or it could be a damp squib. Despite claims that Bodo were better than us I’m basing my own judgement on what I saw – they weren’t. They were more clinical. We got to the byline alot but we did little with it. We need to work on the timing and patterns of runs in attacking situations.

Part of the reason some of the crosses and cut backs didn’t work was players not staggering their arrival into the box.

If we score first it will be game on.

  23. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Good morning.

    That was bad.

We were way off the pace and they had clearly spent 3 weeks drilling for this one tie (what else have they got to do?).

Losing a game for the first time in months can actually be quite disorientating …

… particularly when the general trajectory is upwards.

If managed correctly it can actually turn out to be a good thing.

    Over to you Ange.

PS – I think we’ll give them a game over there.

  24. Any chance the orcs get stranded in a German airport for a day with this storm? Or will they get jammy with that too?

BTW if Dortmund can be bothered next week an early goal would be interesting there too.

I always look for positives in defeat and get critical when we win. Hopefully some feet will be planted back on planet earth in our dressing room and among our support.

Abada, 20 years old. O’Riley has barely kicked a senior flight football. Jota, likewise not massively experienced. New arrivals from Japan still settling and playing their first European game. We should give a few of them a break.

I will be in a minority of one here but Starfekts passing out of defence last night was excellent. A very right footed player playing on the left too. CCV had a poor game with the ball. Taylor had few redeeming moments but showed willing. Maybe scales deserves a crack at LB until we can recruit more fruitfully in the summer?

Something in the collective psyche of the club that haunts us in winnable European ties. That’s the next monkey we need off our backs.

Have a good day. Stay safe.

Well can’t add to what has already been said, the Norwegian fans were well oiled before the game. No doubt the local £4 a pint was like a gift from the gods considering their prices at home😱

The off peak performances against Aberdeen and Raith Rovers suggest it wasn’t a one off.

  27. Very disappointing evening we were well off it last night and were beaten by a more clinical team . They continually found there teammates with passes where as we on too many occasions couldn’t find a green jersey from five yards . But it was the return of the european Celtic , we just can’t do it when faced with a half competent outfit . We have too many players of the same like ,good footballers ,nice to watch ,but when a bit of aggression is required we just don’t have it , and dare I say it that mob across the city do have that in there locker , it has shown on numerous matches abroad that they have the dig required . That last night was poor , down two goals and us passing the ball side to side backwards and forwards as though we we’re two up, passing to try and walk the ball into the net . That was a shadow of the team who humiliated newco but unlike then last night our players never turned up . I won’t mention names we were all there to see for ourselves . I sincerely hope that in the next window a couple of quality ball winners are brought in to protect the wee clever players we have in abundance , much work still to do ange HH

  28. TIMMY7_NOTED on 18TH FEBRUARY 2022 8:59 AM

Lots of reasons why we lost last night but for me it was straightforward, they were bigger, faster and stronger all over the park.

sums it up , played our style of play better than us and also defended as a unit better than us the few times they had to.

  29. First of all I would like to congratulate the Blog, the response from almost everyone was respectful & considered,

There was one exception but he doesn’t count and I refuse to read Mad Mitch so I don’t know what he said.

My take is that Bodo are a very decent team, on a good day ourselves & the Huns might beat them but they are far superior to every other team in the SPL.

Individually & collectively we were poor last night, I thought only Juranovic & Carter Vickers earned pass marks, It happens, we had been on a 17 game unbeaten run but the wheels came off last night.

We have no time to feel sorry for ourselves, the League is what will define our Season, We need a huge reaction from the team on Sunday & in return game in Norway.

I think we will get the response we need but we are as well off being out of European Football this year & just concentrate on the Domestic front,

I don’t see the point in slagging individual players after last night, it was a collective failure, Ange & the team need to learn from it & come back stronger.

  30. included within better defenders required to play the system ange wants I would add that we need too seriously look at our goalkeeping .

  31. We have a very experienced defensive midfielder

( Mccarthy)sitting on the bench every week and Ange won’t play him.

    I wonder why that is.

  32. glendalystonsils on

From the moment they scored the opener , it looked like Bodo had the game worked out and won before a ball was kicked . The way they played to their strengths and exploited our weaknesses certainly suggested that , while we struggled to impose ourselves at both ends of the pitch .

The important thing now is that we have no adverse reaction going into Sunday’s game .

  33. Roughly what Corkcelt said at 10:18 am but with small differences/additions.

I felt O`Riley,Rogic and Jota ( three top class players) were all off the boil and, as Bodo were very good, that made a significant difference.I would add Starfelt and McGregor to those who got pass marks and I felt Abada was OK.

Also, just as we MIGHT have got something out of the game, Bodo scored a rather lucky goal.

Looking on the bright side, how happy will I be if both us and Borussia Dortmund win 0-3 next week :-)))

PS I think Dortmund are more likely to do that than we are. Bodo are better than Sevco.

  34. The Scottish cringe as it manifests itself at P/head — when we think of football we only see the TFOD2.1 / our friends in Govan.

If we are better even just competitive with them then that is enough and this glow of self satisfaction should see us all right when we play the rest of the footballing world …

Unfortunately far too many believe this — and going by last night’s performance our attitude has spread very quickly to the squad — and we pay a heavy price year after year.

Even worse we now have the second stage of the Scottish Cringe developing — the fatalism / rinse and repeat.

The CL is not for the likes of us — the EuL is where we need to be.

Until we get a CL group elect in the EuL — then the EuConL is now where we need to be.

Until we get a team who have CL aspirations of their own in the EuConL — who cares about Europe the SPL is everything.

Until we are up against a team who are desperate for CL monies and who have a booster club that will turn every trick to help them achieve it.

And that will bring on the third stage of the Scottish Cringe — everybody is against us so fighting back is futile and the best we can do is fail honourably and then live off our pious indignation with the unfairness of it all.

No wonder we can’t build a ferry or do ourselves justice in Europe.

We are now a team of Bronski’s / SPL flat track bullies — all going swimmingly until a SPL side hits us back and our bottle crashes.

AP needs help to mould the team / develop the squad and understand the WCS attitude of the support.

The crowd was scared fartless last night never mind the team.

Add in the GB self indulgent songbook about Dublin / ploughing / US small arms / big hats / Garryowen fascists and you have the perfect storm.
