  1. Did the board bashers read the 02.15 Lenny quotes? We are looking. I don’t doubt we will acquire new signings who improve the side.

  2. I thought Danny McGrain had a first team coaching role?!

Could swear I saw him in the dugout at games!

‘Re DD’s reported statement in the Daily Record…..the source has motives for presenting as it did.’

It’s a verbatim quote from a BBC Scotland interview, no one was spinning anything.

Those are The Great Desmondo’s views and you know perfectly well that the Celtic Board set their compass by his views.

And with the combined and accumulated business talent and experience on the Celtic Board who could doubt that they will achieve what they want?

  5. Some posters believe that we shouldn’t criticise the board .The board and management are generally doing a good job. That doesn’t mean every decision they make is a good one.

We’ve known for some time that Hooper and Wanyama wouldn’t be here this season. I also now that it’ not always easy to get replacements in.

I believe we are either gambling that we can qualify for the CL with a weakened team from last season or we are too blinkered in the buy young/low sell high model.

Not having a replacement goalscorer lined up to replace Hooper is a risk we shouldn’t take.

  6. Ernie,

Sorry I haven’t replied earlier. Computer not working too well. Sir Bob Kelly had the grace to allow Mr Stein to run the football side of the club, after years of mismanaging it himself during the tenure of Jimmy McGrory. I grant you he was an honourable man who had Celtic’s best interests at heart but those who followed hadn’t a clue.

Personally, I think Mr Desmond was simply being diplomatic when he gave that answer.

  7. BBC – Big Bad Charlotte

Is there ever a better indicator of truth than when the subject of those truths goes out of their way to shut up the person telling them?

While there is no way to definitively say that the Charlotte Fakes twitter account is completely truthful or not, the recent turning of attention to Rangers media activities has brought out the litigious side of Media House.

The key allegations relate to Rangers lobbying the press to be favourable to their agenda. However, more disturbingly, the documents released by Charlotte allege that part of Rangers media strategy was to get the press to print stories that would be negative towards other clubs. As stated in Charlotte’s document, purportedly an email from Jack irvine, head of Media House who advised Rangers on media matters:

“Also it becomes important for negative stories to be placed about opposing teams and we would want some distance from Rangers FC”

This means that Rangers were actively involved in placing negative stories about other clubs via favoured journalists. In addition, Irvine took aim at bloggers such as Phil Mac Giolla Bhain with one email calling him “that bastard Phil mac Bollocks”.

However all this could prove to be small fry compared to a document published yesterday from Charlotte available at http://www.scribd.com/doc/156371097/Media-House-Report-May-2011. Two points in particular are particularly contentious. On 16th May 2011, Rangers liaised with the BBC on “how to define pro-IRA songs”. 5 days later, during the Scottish Cup Final, this happened: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=RdlM4yTpTFo

Rob Maclean brings up an allegation from a third party that Celtic fans were chanting sectarian songs. Pat Nevin then blathers on making vague condemnations of sectarianism in general. 5 days after Rangers conversed with the BBC regarding how to define pro-IRA songs, BBC staff go live on air talking about reports of sectarian chanting.

The issue being with this is that there doesn’t appear to have actually been any sectarian chanting. The BBC replied to a complaint as such:

“ It is not and has never been custom and practice for our commentators to offer opinions on chants from the crowd. They are there to describe the game. Also, whilst commentating they are wearing headphones and listening to the director’s voice in their ear, so I would be surprised if they could accurately make out crowd chants in any case”

Of course, the further issue with this is that Pat Nevin spoke to the Justice Committee of MSPs and stated regarding the Cup final:

“The song went something like, ‘As a young man, I’m going to join the IRA – provisional wing’. It offended me and I do not want to hear it at a football ground. I was shocked and surprised that Celtic Football Club and a great number of fans complained to the BBC, because I expect to hear them say that they do not want to hear that sort of song at their ground.”

And therein lies the issue. Rob Maclean stated that a third party told him that the chanting had happened, the BBC stated that it is highly unlikely that BBC in studio staff could hear such chanting and Nevin stated to MSPs that he heard these chants first hand. Pat Nevin took to twitter last night to state:

“For the record I had NO knowledge of the topic being brought up that day before Rob asked the question. NONE at all.”

And that, in itself, is an inconsistency. If BBC staff are able to clearly hear sectarian chanting, then they must surely expect it to be a matter that would be brought up as part of their coverage. In addition, as part of the coverage, Nevin himself stated:

“I’m going to mention it every time I hear it. Let’s embarrass these teams.”

Which lends further credence to the concept that Nevin must have been aware that, if sectarian songs were heard, they would indeed be brought up, particularly if Nevin himself claims to have heard the songs.

And all this just 5 days after Rangers spoke to the BBC to apparently redefine Pro-IRA chanting. Furthermore, the BBC had to apologise due to the number of complaints raised and the spurious nature of the allegations.

While it would be extremely difficult to ever prove beyond doubt that the two are connected, the timing seems more than coincidental. 5 days after Rangers speak to the BBC about Pro-IRA chanting, ostensibly targeting Celtic, Rob Maclean makes a claim live on TV that Celtic fans are carrying out such chanting, a claim that is later repeatedly repudiated by the BBC.

The BBC is duty bound to be impartial in it’s coverage. Making false allegations regarding Celtic fans can, sometimes, be put down to mishearing things, however to make them 5 days after being lobbied by Rangers specifically on the subject of how to define Pro-IRA chanting seems too coincidental to be anything other than a direct result of the lobbying of Rangers which, if true, contravenes the impartiality that the BBC is duty bound to uphold as a broadcaster, particularly as a public service broadcaster.

If a taxpayer funded organisation with a responsibility to ensure that they broadcast impartially contravenes that responsibility and the trust of the people who fund them, their integrity is seriously diminished and there is little doubt that this is the first of the Charlotte revelation that will be well covered by the press.

  8. Allgreen, people of course should be critical when needed but we are being bombarded with constant negativity by the usual suspects.

Initially I was appalled by D d saying what he did. When I thought about it when I had calmed down, I imagined the reaction if he had said what we all believe.

damned if he did or didn’t imo.

On balance, I think he should just have said we don’t comment on other clubs.

U16s unlucky to lose semi-final of Swiss Cup to FC Zurich after penalty shootout. Hoops now play Rapid Vienna in 3rd/4th place play-off (PC)

  13. I never saw 67, 70, never so KK etc… I was young when rangers (RIP) where doing their 9ers and it was hell. wee Fergus laid the foundation and we moved forward as a club. since stopping their 9ers celtic have won a lot more than I was ever used to. in the main the celtic board have been able to put a winning team on the pitch even though we have lost some truly wonderfully players, topping that list the KOK. I have had some great times following the hoops and I hope to have more great times following the celtic.

my biggest criticisms of celtic post-wee Fergus putting the foundations in place i.e. stadium development etc… are; 1) not listening to fergus when he said don’t appoint KK. 2) lack of investment in growing and diversifying the business to increase income and improve the clubs overall income to make us more profitable i.e. able to invest more in football department. 3) poor decision making in the MON era to buy big then let players run their contracts down because we could not sustain it (once all the players left we had little money to spend.

so from my perspective the future is looking bright in that; the mess made by kk and the debt of MON era is gone. celtic are investing in technologies and are looking at other business opportunities i.e. celtic triangle etc… (I hope is the very beginning of where they plan to take us)

we are now buying younger players for reasonable fees and for free transfers and we are selling before contract finish and players leave for free, which then allows the club to reinvest in the team (good scouting a must)

it looks to me like celtic are trying to develop the club in a proper manner. we will loss some quality players along the way but I doubt we will loss any player as good as KOK over the next decade.

    onwards and upwards celtic fc

Agreed about Bob Kelly. He knew his limits, that’s why he appointed Jock Stein and, after an initial spat, deferred to him on football matters. Those who followed him (Kelly) were out of their depth.

Disagree about The Great Desmondo, he’s a polished enough performer that he could have talked round the question. That level of praise, and degree of certainty about the future, was more than diplomacy.

  15. Desmond gives stability to Celtic. Although he is a ruthless businessman, he is preferable to most.

goldstar10/EmeraldBee\o/ proud to be an internet bampot:

WRITTEN BY JAMES TRAYNOR (Yeah! really)

ONCE again Rangers are the subject of an article by Alex Thomson, who appears obsessed by this club’s business.

This time, however, he turns his attention on me in a most callous and disgusting manner.

Fortunately I’ve been the target of many bloggers many times because of the well, let’s just say strident way I’ve gone about my work. So, if you give it out you have to take it back.

This is one of the unwritten laws of journalism but this person’s blog cannot pass without comment. Incredibly, it’s allowed to sit under Channel 4’s name.

This man has set himself up as a paragon of integrity yet he relies on Craig Whyte as a credible source.

Does he not know the former Rangers owner is under Crown Office investigation?

Thomson publishes the content of emails in which I make it clear to Whyte that a story about his spending plans will start with the figure of £15m for new players. It was necessary to let Whyte view the piece so that it would be difficult for him to try to deny it later.

Of course he did try just the same but he knows he said it. I know he said it and so, too, should Thomson. If he’s spoken to Whyte he’ll also know what this man is like.

The email was sent not because Whyte was being given editorial approval, as Thomson appears to be making out, but because I wanted Whyte to see the figure.

Also, show me a journalist who hasn’t used these methods to extract further information and I’ll show a hack who wasn’t doing his job.

It is necessary to get close to people in football if you are to gain possession of the intelligence required to do the job properly. And that brings me on to Thomson’s other point.

He claimed I asked Whyte for a job. How utterly absurd.

This blogger conveniently forgets to mention it was my work, along with that of the Daily Record’s Keith Jackson, which finally exposed Whyte and brought him down.

We had been gathering information about the Ticketus deal and also Whyte’s failure to hand over PAYE and NI. It was a long process and vital that the line of communication with Whyte remained open.

The fact is he asked me to come and work with him on more than one occasion. He also asked if I would advise him privately.

A game was being played out and working for Rangers at that time wasn’t the goal. In fact, I kept my newspaper informed of the offers through a senior editorial executive because it was important they were on side with the operation.

I also made sure a senior person at the BBC, with whom I had a contract, also knew.

One or two trustworthy colleagues also were made aware of what was going on and we actually laughed at the very thought of me working with someone we were determined to expose.

On any other day I’d have dismissed this latest blog without comment but this is a special time for Rangers. We are a year on from administration and are putting in place a solid structure under the new regime.

Rangers have released a documentary on that crucial year on this very site and that’s what we should all be concentrating on. Enjoy, and stop worrying about bloggers.

(ps I get this gnawing feeling that “obsessed” has become the new hun “quintesenntial” I know I have the articles somewhere but at the moment I just can’t find them. Maybe it was both of them – Jabba and Daryll. I’m sure, somehere, I also have copies of the e-mails where a journalist sooks up to 0067 Agent Craig for begging geez uz a job.)

BBC report of the German Supercup…..”Bayern were without key midfielders Franck Ribery and Bastian Schweinsteiger, ” …..Schweinsteiger played from the 67 minute ..

They really need direction ,you have to query everything they cover .

  19. Well, its groundhog transfer window time for us rumour-hungry Hoops.

Despite 99% of the transfer talk ultimately being proved as p*sh, biannually we click on the many internet links, hoping for something more than speculation involving “a source close to the club” or a re-hashed story about the same players “linked” time and again to Parkhead.

However, why does the club inadvertently fuel our scramble for information by doing its transfer business so late in the transfer windows? Granted, we have Virgil and Balde in this season, but NFL has made no secret of the fact that we are still working “behind the scenes” on (an)other player(s).

The transfer window departures from Celtic this time around were signposted in neon lettering. Knowing that Hooper and Vic were leaving, why have we left it so late (again) to try to obtain replacements?

The policy of last minute deals harks back several years now. By and large, it has led to disappointment, panic buys and a sense of wasted time and effort on the part of us news-hungry fans.

Failure to fill Hooper’s void would be negligent on the part of the club, particularly given the cost-benefit of modest investment at this stage to secure CL qualification.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve no doubt that signing players is as complicated as NFL reminds us, however it seems to me that where there is a will, there’s a way and certain other clubs’ determination to get players in is evident from their seemingly more rapid processes.

Despite SkySports’ contrived hype and over-analysis of the transfer window (before it “slams shut”), I would much rather have the club sign its players on day 1 of the window, then come out and tell us “that’s it”. I’d rather not tune in to SkySports News or search the net, but find myself drawn like a moth to an ultimately false flame.

Come on Celtic, get the business done early doors. Presumably, work doesn’t begin on day 1 of the windows. Early signings would benefit both fans and the team management (particularly in the Summer when CL qualification hangs in the balance).

    Rant over- laptop slamming shut….

From as far back as I can remember from the age of five-six standing on an electrical box outside The Granite City ( now The Brazen Head) being held up by my brother cheering my little heart for my heroes had won the Corination Cup against all odds, this is the team I have supported for 60 years, good times bad times, good players average players, good owners bad owners, long before the Timternet , in my opinion this is the best time I have ever had as a Tim, (ruling out 67 and 9 in a row of course) moan? Well we all moan about, the team, the players, the board, but what I will say that season which has not even started yet, is I have never seen so much negatively given out to a Celtic team, Manager, and Board in all my years, after the season we had last year it beggars believe, I said it through the week and I will say it again, there are to many Huns in this site, and to many Tims dancing to there tune, and you know who you are, Hail-Hail.

You are also right to point out that this site now has too many Huns.

    Far too many,

The saddest part of it is that some of the most Hunnish attacks on the club come from guys who THINK that they support Celtic.

They are the very worst kind of Huns.

    …. & NO, I will not.

  22. Why is the DD quote being raised and discussed now? Rangers started as a new entity in div 3. They will only reach the top league by virtue of promotion. We are at the start of a new season and preparing for an important CL qualifier yet people are slaughtering DD over an old quote.

    Why?

What relevance does it have today?

Have I missed news about Rangers being fast trscked to the SPL next eeek?
