Their established practice is to call it Londonderry the first time it’s mention in a report and after that it’s called Derry each time it’s mentioned.

  6. The hand of God on

Kev J is in a clique with Park the bus 442,the Sceptical Citizen and Martin O’Seville…maybe one or two others that I forget.Anyway what a wonderful finish to the game yesterday, the 2 boys next to us left with about 5 minutes to go which I can never understand as Celtic have done the last minute winner so many times. At this stage of the season all that matters is results, great performances are always welcome but winning is key.

Are you suggesting that Scotland should leave the UK because of what happened on Bloody Sunday?

A wee observation that if the top 6 stays as it is we will go to any 2 from Pittodrie or Tynecastle or Easter Rd or Fir Park 3 x this season.

Sevco will go to 2 of the above only once.

This feels a bit of bad luck for Celtic to me.

More Away games vs the bottom 6 (as Sevco will enjoy) is typically easier than Tynecastle or Pittodrie I would have thought.

Our Luck has been bad all Season, hopefully it is turning.

The bankrupt (on so many levels) klub are pathetic child like bullies, to be fair to GVB he disnae seem a bitter aye ready type.

No Celtic players that Celtic want will be leaving this window, I’m sure Newco will sell wan of their main assets last minute.

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the Bloody Sunday massacre. It also marks the 50th anniversary of me supporting Glasgow Celtic.

I had just turned eight years of age the previous December, and while the conflict in the North was escalating, one of my main concerns was which soccer team I would declare my allegiance to.

TBH, I wasn’t fussed about any team. My eldest brother supported Everton while an other older brother supported Leeds.

But each day in school my contemporaries were boasting about their favourite English First Division team. Chelsea, Liverpool & Man U were all well supported in Ireland at the time but I loved going around the country supporting the Dubs in Gaelic football.

And then Bloody Sunday occurred. There was saturation coverage in all the media and because I lived in Dublin the coverage was hostile towards the British and sympathetic to the innocent victims.

My most vivid memory of that time was the funerals of the victims. I had never really known anyone who died, so the sight of a line of coffins in a Derry chapel – given the circumstances of the deaths and the national atmosphere at the time – encouraged me to make a huge decision to protest these brutal murders.

Now remember, I was only eight years of age. So my protest would be that I would never support an English First Division team. And to this day I haven’t and I won’t. And I was always happy to tell people why.

To emphasise my protest, I would soon pick a team from outwith the 1st Division and, when people would ask why I didn’t support a ‘big’ team, I would eagerly explain my decision.

The following Sunday I patiently awaited my turn to read the Sunday paper. When I got my chance I went straight to the results page, ignored the First Division and was ready to make my choice from the 2nd div.

The thing was though that none of the team names appealed to me. I quickly moved on to the the 3rd and then the 4th but still nothing appealed to me.

So now, I was looking at the Scottish First Division. One name jumped out me

    KILMARNOCK.

Could this be my new team?

Kilmarnock was similar in name to Portmarnock where we swam regularly as a family and I knew that there was a connection. And there is. Both places are named after the Christian saint Mearnóg.

However, another team appealed to me and that was CELTIC.

I knew nothing about either team, and wouldn’t for several more years, but I knew that being Irish, I was culturally Celtic. And so I made that momentous decision.

In solidarity with the victims of Bloody Sunday I declared myself to be an UFB and chose the mighty Glasgow Celtic to be my soccer team.

At the time, I had no idea what I was letting myself in for. But it was the best and proudest sporting decision I made in my life.

  10. Interesting chat surrounding Morelos leaving the huns tomorrow for Fenerbache.

It’s a Morelos transfer story which seems to have emerged in Turkey so straight away my bs meter is twitching.

The only thing different here from the dozens of Morelos rumours is the transfer fee. £6 million euros according to Turkish reports.

That seems plausible to me. It would be a huge loss for them were they to lose fatty tomorrow although I’ve no doubt they’ll try to placate the fans with a couple of loanees and Souttar.

Turkeys transfer window shuts after ours so there’s still time for the smsm to get some mileage out of it

He’ll be like a new signing after the super Rangers reject numerous big money bids for his services

  12. James McLean wearing a black armband today with 14 in memory of those killed in his home town 50 years ago today.

Nice commemoration by the Green Brigade yesterday.

A horrible day in Derry’s and Ireland’s history much to Westminster’s shame which led to many more innocent people suffering and unnecessary anguish for families .

    Fantastic post ,

All my family / relatives in Ireland support Celtic but for many we are their second team .

It really annoys me because they are all republicans and have a dislike for any other English organisation.

What worries me is that English influence through television will be a negative effect on our young people.

Ie., Liverpool can’t be bad as Mo Shalah plays for them HH

  16. Whilst no doubt Nadal is a supreme athlete, he has/had a connection with the infamous performance doctor in Spain whose blood samples for testing mysteriously ‘disappeared’. As did Farah and several of the famous Barcelona team…

Great wee story. I had a lump in my throat and a wee tear in my eye reading that.

I jumped on the Celtic bandwagon at 7 – a few months after Lisbon. Shameless gloryhunter!

  18. Friesdorfer,

He reminds me of Hun behaviour.

At least Andy Murray was diplomatic about it, 2 more games stopped for Heart issues.
