Scott Brown was excellent tonight as were a few others but we fall for that every time when the opposition is naff – I’ll bet a few on these posts could have pulled on the hoops tonight and got through it! Will they be excellent when the opposition is of a higher calibre?! I would not be holding my breath but of course its early days for BR and in any case how many who played tonight will be wearing the hoops come September? As far as I could see Celtic did raise their percentage of more direct passes and reduced their percentage of side/backward passes so that was encouraging but not too much can be read into the performance tonight – lets see the word “excellent” when we play Copenhagen, Zagreb etc in the final qualifier – we will beat the Kazaks won’t we?!

  2. BR slowly but surely learning who can and can’t do a job for him. Honestly didn’t see a failure tonight.

  3. TheLurkinTim, like The Imps, I don’t have enough annual leave to make that road trip… the equivalent of driving from CP to the edge of Leicester, and back, every day for a week!

IF we prevail against Astana we would be expected (by the seeding system) to face one of the following in the final CL play-off round:

BATE Borisov of Belarus, who beat SJK Seinäjoki of Finland 4-2 (*on aggregate) and face Dundalk next.

Legia Warsaw of Poland, who beat HŠK Zrinjski of Bosnia & Herzegovina 3-1* and face Trenčín of Slovakia next.

Dinamo Zagreb of Croatia, who beat Vardar Skopje of Macedonia 5-3* and face Dinamo Tblisi of Georgia next.

Ludogorets Razgrad of Bulgaria, who beat Mladost Podgorica of Montenegro 5-0* and face Crvena Zvezda (aka Red Star Belgrade) of Serbia next.

FC København of Denmark, who beat Crusaders 9-0* and face Astra Giurgiu of Romania next.

Of course, we could face any of Dundalk (wouldn’t that be nice?), Trenčín, Dinamo Tblisi, Red Star Belgrade or Astra Giurgiu in the next round (should we take care of our own business), as the higher seeds don’t always win every tie. My preference would be Dundalk, Dinamo Zagreb, Red Star Belgrade or Trenčín, in that order.

Your standards are different from mine.

I want us to qualify for the CL group stages.

And I want us to have a team and a squad that can achieve this.

Tonight was a step forward for the team and the manager.

However some of the players on show did not perform to the standard that I want to see.

For some it was a degradation based on age and the effects of injuries, for others it was the fact that they are either just not good enough or they will need at last a season of intensive coaching and personal improvement.

LG is not a team player and I fear he never will be a team player.

  5. The objective tonight was achieved but not much more. Fitness wise a few are still a wee bit off the pace. In terms of this sqaud, if Rodgers can get them to the CL it will be a miracle. We need at least two players in by Friday, a centre half is a must.

Re Brown, after a very slow start he did OK. He is not moving as well as he did before and it’s clear to see he is leaving some of the running to others. Personally I fear his best days are gone and he will get found out if we keep playing him. Any suggestion that he put his doubters in their place tonight is a fantasy. Much stiffer tests lie ahead.

Roberts – what a player and what a privilege to watch him.

  6. If Scott Brown is excellent next week against Astrana then we can say he’s back to somewhere close to his best. In a game against part timers he should look good, the fact he was so awful last week, on the back of a poor season, is what has many questioning whether he’s still good enough.

  7. Reading back my opinions are obviously not in the majority. No flying flukes given.

Criticism where it’s due, as in last weeks case, but tonight was indeed a professional performance and credit should be offered.

My man of the match was Jobo and his noisy assistants in The Standing Section. We heard you loud and clear.

  8. BALlYMENATOYBHOY,

Biggest lot of shite post so far tonight.

Not one poster on here tonight would have gotten through the 1st 15 minutes.

  9. Just checked the BBC report.

Not a mention of our first half penalty award.

It was a significant incident which featured the ref awarding, then wrongly being persuaded by his linesman to change his mind.

    What’s their, BBC, motive?

  10. BEATBHOY…

A not bad deal, kids at the game, so the usual, dad paid.

Can’t believe some weren’t happy with our performance tonight, yep, I’d have liked more goals but it was a job done and some nice football to watch.

Time to dig a film out to watch, going square eyed now:(

We lack the calibre to beat most of those teams. No where near in fact.

I’m happy to get into the EL this year and build for the following.

We have a challenge at home this season too.

  12. can’t agree with SB having a great game tonight , thought he a lot of time on the ball as he was under no pressure from the opposition players , he continually played sideways and back passes, a few across the park passes some finding a player others didn’t ,he still gets involved with rash tackles and back chat with the officials doing himself no good I still feel his best position is driving forward but I think his legs have long gone for that roll.

  13. For those not in the know, Madmitch has been with us now on the blog approaching a decade.

He only surfaces when things could go pear shaped for us, and attemps rather transparently to stir things up.

My guess is he could be another incarnation of Ernie Lynch.

My advice: scroll by, or read and enjoy his pain.

    :-)

  14. TTR @ 10.52

PR needs a lot of advice and coaching.

Desperately needs to add some new tricks to his game.

He played well tonight but the LB he was up against was shocking last week.

If he plays on the right he needs to work on his RHS game so that he can attack the by line.

    Great Read James.

Cracking night, I think the Imps are the luckiest team we have ever played. could have been 10 but for pure luck,a deflection, the ref or a bad bounce.

Pluses Brown was immense, passing a lot better and reading the game he also found that yard he had lost. Forrest look braver tonight in the first half, Dembelle will need to be patient, the big man has great feet and the Griff is the Griff he gives his all at all times. Wee Paddy had some first half and tired a bit second.

Armstrong was poor i thought and Mcgregor second half was poor. Broony was a one man mid at times.

Brendan got it right this week, 3 at the back worked better than 4 last week. Onward and upwards.

Hopefully get one or two in tomorrow for the deadline, Need some steel yet.

  16. So the majority on here tonight reckon that Scott Brown done good tonight!

    And he did.

And if he stays injury/niggle free he will do so many, many times again.

    #hunskelper

Is he one of the few hunskelpers in our team now?

Brown was injured last season, wasn’t he. Hamstring issues to be exact and he played with the issues.

Hard to castigate him for playing below his standards ?

  18. Final moan of the night.

BR — Please do a lot more work on our corners.

They were shocking, doubly so as we seemed to be working to a plan that failed from the off.

Finally the LRI GK is pretty handy.

In contrast CG was in Dracula mode and looked a bit rusty.

Hello this is WEE BGFC. First comes first. Went to the game today and me and Da took my Uncle Shug as we had a spare. Great game! So relieved! An absolute joy to watch! Re placers of shacked-up-lager-shandy here we come! Just got home and looking through comments. I thought most of the comments were good and stuff i was thinking myself but you got the odd 1 or 2 moaners. Ah well, thought it was awesome myself but each to his own. Anyway, i made doughnut batter earlier and they are currently sitting in boiling oil just waiting to be sugared and split between me and Da! So, in conclusion, PARTY TIME ALL ROUND!!!!!!! For the Brown knockers, I was with you guys after last week and in general. But tonight he was miles better than he has been for a long time, I know its part timers but still. They were a wee handy team with lots of discipline i thought it was a nice tough the Hoops fans cheering their subs near FT and clapping them off.

    Stuffy but we are through.

Roberts has only 1 or 2 tricks but his feet are so fast you can’t tell what one he is going to do. He does need to mature and learn when to pass it after he has beaten his man though.

Celtic captain Scott Brown is set to pull out of Scotland’s matches against Italy and France after revealing he has brought his club season to a premature end because of injury.

The midfielder, who will be 31 next month, has been playing for Celtic over the past month despite problems with both of his hamstrings.

After leading the Scottish champions to the 3-1 victory over Hearts at Tynecastle on Saturday which effectively secured their fifth consecutive title, Brown will now sit out Celtic’s remaining three Premiership fixtures.

As he looks for rest and recovery, the Scotland captain will also speak to national team boss Gordon Strachan about missing the friendlies against Italy in Malta on 29 May and France in Metz on 4 June.

“I need to go and speak to Gordon,” said Brown. “I don’t know what will happen about that. I think that’s me done and dusted now for the season. I need to close down for a few weeks and just concentrate on my fitness.

“I’ve been struggling to get around the pitch in the past few weeks, I’ve just been sitting in front of the back four. You could see I wasn’t moving very well in the last few minutes against Hearts before I came off. People play through injuries but I’ve got tendonitis in both hamstrings and I just need to chill, settle and go and enjoy my summer.”

Your obviously lacking in confidence or your just not good enough – probably the latter!

    ……………………………………………..

Never lacked in confidence at anything, but realistic enough to know I could never play even 5 minutes of CL football and get away with it.

You obviously reckon you are a decent footballer but probably not very clever.

  32. GLENDALYSTONSILS & TWISTS N TURNS, there is indeed no chance of Patrick Roberts ever getting a game at Man C. His name is far too British. Their line-up tonight against Bayern Munich was:

1st half: Caballero, Maffeo, Adarabioyo, Kolarov, Angelino, Fernando, Fernandinho, Zinchenko, Iheanacho, Navas, Brandon Barker

2nd half: Gunn, Maffeo, Adarabioyo, Kolarov, Angelino, Clichy, Fernando, Fernandinho, Delph, Bony, Navas

It’s a good job Fabian Delph’s name sounds French and Angus Gunn’s name sounds Scottish, as otherwise they wouldn’t have got a game. Apparently City can only play one English (sounding) named player per game…

I guess we should refrain from referring to Mr Roberts as Paddy, lest they ask for him back again!!!

  33. Excellent first half and delighted to get through without too many nervous moments. Negatives – shots well off target, poor unvaried corners, and Erik doing an Efe which could have proved costly. Overall, well done.

  34. BIG-CUP-WINNERS on 20TH JULY 2016 10:58 PM

Yes he was injured and that is probably a reason for his poor season. Last week he was fit and ready to go, according to him, but was probably as bad as he was in the semi at Hampden. Tonight he was ok in second half, struggled to get back when he lost the ball, something he was always good at, I didn’t see first half so can’t comment. Maybe he’s finished, maybe not, we’ll soon find out, next midweek hopefully the start of maybe not.

Pinch the tap of the sachet as to push the tomatoe sauce toward the bottom, and then attack the aforementioned area with your knashers.

    Always worked for me.
