  1. Was a good first half.

Second we went more the individual route and lost shape.

Still think we need a defensive leader.Thought Erik was poor tonight and against better opponents he could have cost us 2 goals. The one where his hesitance left Gordon in no mans land the guy hit round the post and the header straight up the middle to edge of box that guy volleyed over.

There were lots of positives and i thought Armstrong was better than McGregor who was short on a lot of passes.

I liked Brown playing a deeper role.

If only Izzy could cross? He overhits everything. We should tellPaddy to stay really wide when Izzy plays so he could get on the end of them.

Forrest was very good in first but seemed like others to drift out game in 2nd.

  2. Greenwells Glory on

Hi Ghuys, Salve salve;- Well that was more like it tonight. still a good ways to go but I’ll leave it to the manager.

Watched the second half of the Astana game, you know what? Imps are better than them. Mind you that’s only on todays showing. Poor keeper , weak on the left and no sign of much creativity. Pitch looked ok. They were a very lucky team to go through. I’m off now – up early fishing tomorrow.

    Evening folks

BBC website suggesting in their fixtures section that next weeks game in Kazakhstan is on Tuesday with 19:45 ko

That is clearly wrong as Astana is 5 hours ahead of CP time – unless the game has a local KO of 00:45 Wednesday.

Last time we played in Kazakhstan it was a 5:00 ko CP time so be ready for knocking off sharp either Tuesday or Wednesday.

Anyone got any info re time/day yet?

  4. TSOAL,

my boy complained about there being no ketchup as some guy in front of him lifted about 16 ;-))

  5. Brown still not great tonight, passing is awful at times.

Wish Roberts would change wings every now and then and try get some crosses in, mix it up abit.

Good result but worried we couldn’t break them down more in 2nd half. Thought they would have tired in big pitch and we would have got another 1 or 2 more.

Like big Erik but not overly confident he will be good enough against top class players in Europe. He’s a battler and gives 100% thou so that’s massive plus points for him.

Was hoping Christie would have got 15/20 in the role Armstrong had tonight, not convinced Armstrong has it for European level.

Well done the fans.. Good size of crowd and very focal on the TV.

  6. Doc

You’re dead right about Stuart Armstrong. I thought he had a great game tonight, probably his best since he signed for us. I think Brendan rates him and we’ll see a lot more of him. He’s still developing and one area where he can improve is in his tackling. The fans would love him to a man if he showed a bit more bravery when tackling. He chases back well and wins the ball back but I think he pulls out of some 50/50s. He’s a player I like though and I hope he does well with us.

  7. Say it again

Last season Red Imps were knocked out by Mjitland from Denmark

    3-0 on Agg(0-1 and 2-0)

Midgieland then beat Southampton to qualify for EL

Midgieland came through group stages and beat Man Utd at home

before collapsing at Old trafford Rashfords debut

This was after selling us Erik.

The part timers of red imps have 8 full timers in starting 11

Their managers has been manager of Penarol for some of

    our older viewers.

RED IMPS are no world beaters but they aren’t Annan Athletic either

  8. This is what the manager had to say..

Brendan Rodgers was low key despite Celtic’s 3-0 win over Lincoln Red Imps of Gibraltar.

Three first half goals went some way towards atoning for last week’s disastrous 1-0 first leg defeat.

Goals from Mikel Lustig, Leigh Griffiths and Patrick Roberts booked a tie against Astrana next week with Rodgers well aware that his side must improve to stay on course for the group stages.

Straight after the win over Lincoln Red Imps he said: “Overall the team was good when we had the ball. At that level of intensity they impressed.

“We scored three and their goalkeeper maybe stopped it being double figures I’m pleased to get through and delighted with the attitude of the players.

“Pleased to qualify, that was the objective. Intensity in the first 20 minutes was outstanding.”

Lustig leveled the aggregate scores in the 23rd minute, before the half hour mark Griffiths and Roberts had netted but there was to be no second half goal rush.

A big improvement will be required to see off Astrana with Rodgers not going overboard after tonight’s success.

Reflecting on his first competitive home match the former Liverpool boss said: “”Tonight was really special. I couldn’t have wanted more from tonight. I grew up with that, seeing it from the outside.

Overall the team was good when we had the ball. At that level of intensity they impressed.

Crowd were incredible, near full house, and the players really felt that support.”

It took a stoppage time goal from Marin Ancic to send Astrana through at the expense of Zalgaris with the Lithuanian’s side poised to go through on a 1-1 aggregate until Ancic struck

    ABOUT THE STADIUM

“Astana Arena” – the stadium in Astana, capital of Kazakhstan with a capacity of 30,000 spectators. One of six such facilities in the world with a movable roof system size of 10 000 sq.m. Arena 30 000 seats conceived as a large amphitheater with a two-tier structure: the lower terrace of 16 000 seats, surrounding the playing field, and the top position of the 14 000 seats, hanging on the western and eastern sides. Wow… Some interesting perspectives tonight…

Surprised anyone is using performance against a Highland League standard team as a benchmark to praise players against…

No cigar but job done – however all Celtic Players should have looked a class apart tonight.

On no account should jubilation or celebration of any individual performance be expressed tonight. Relief ….yes!

Any fan hanging up the bunting tonight has seriously been conditioned to accept downsizing on a dangerous scale.

I’m relieved but not ecstatic….and still mildly embarrassed by the aggregate score… Reputation of Celtic in no way enhanced in Europe by winning 3-1 over two legs against semi pros playing in an amateur league….

  14. Brown didn’t have bitton beside him in midfield – and he played well. My theory is holding up so far. Bitton a style of play doesn’t suit our team.

    BALlYMENATOYBHOY,

bet a few on these posts could have pulled on the hoops tonight and got through it!

    —————————————————————————————————————————-

Biggest lot of shite post so far tonight.

Not one poster on here tonight would have gotten through the 1st 15 minutes.

    ——————————————————————————————————————————–

Beg to differ there, my contentious friend.

Put me in nets and I’d have strolled it until at least the 17th minute. After that, it’s in the hands of Staropramen, Guiness, and Stella Artois’ residual legacy.

  16. Job done and we move on to the next round. I’m not too bothered analysing individual player’s performance as for most of them this was only their second 90 minutes match and for some – Armstrong, MacGregor, Roberts, Forrest. – it was their first full game. K am a happy bunny tonight and will judge players when they are up to speed. Onwards and upwards.

I,m in the unfortunate position of only ever being able to see the team I,ve supported for 50 years maybe 10 times a season on tv and if I’m lucky,3 or 4 times per season at paradise.

For the most part I depend on this site for my Celtic updates.I,m also in the unfortunate position of being paid on the level of my performance on a daily basis which brings with it a sense of realism.

Last night we overcame our first hurdle under new management.(take a few moments to imagine the reaction if we hadn’t,t)and now next week we move on to an arguably tougher challenge with a weeks more experience and familiarisation. Who know,s ,we may even be heralding a new messiah in the form of a CB who slays all before him(or her)!

Anyway, thanks again for the live updates…Bon voyage!!

  19. Leigh Griffiths was incredible restricted to scoring more goals than any other in the last decade!

    That is incredible restricted!

  20. An old friend of mine, he is in his mid 80s, was at CP tonight on the Carluke bus.

He just called me to say how well the team played.

Now I am unhappy with the second half, and not only because I had Celtic with 4 goals.

I just thought they dropped down a gear and were a wee bit too casual in front of goal.

    Answer me this.

PR had the FB on toast and a yellow card, so why weren’t we giving him the ball as much, or even switching James over to have a run at him?

  21. TOSB, agreed to an extent.

Tracking back is a job Armstrong has to do,tackling back I’d leave to Brown, he is better at it, although every player can improve, in every aspect.

  22. ‘GG, professionalism.

Game won, we didn’t have to humiliate our opponent and give them reason to hack at our players, which they didn’t do.

Game was over as a contest.

More clear cut scoring opportunities second half ( no me neither!)

    Guide to the future…..none!

  25. Doc

Another couple of goals in the second half would have been a real confidence booster for the players and fans and would have had the dead team spinning in their grave.

Your overall point is well made and I agree with you – where I disagree (again), is on the “downsizing’ assertion.

We live within our means, any form of ‘quick fix’ or so-called “upsizing” would only involve heavy borrowing.

Of course it is difficult to accept and limits our options, however it is the only sustainable route to follow within the environment we inhabit.

Can we get better performances? – I believe we can.

Can we get better value and a ‘bigger bang for our buck’ – I believe we can.

But it is ‘pie in the sky’ thinking that we can compete with the top leagues when it comes to transfer fees and wages – a club finishing bottom of the EPL is now guaranteed £100 million in TV revenue – we can get £2.8 million, IF, we win the title.

We are around thirty-first in the financial pecking order in the UK, behind all of the EPL and half of the Championship – we haven’t downsized, we have been left behind in the SKY/BT bonanza, and similar, in the other top European leagues.

As long as we stay as financially strong as we can, do not weigh down the club in unsustainable debt and make the ultimate use of our resources, we will be in a position to take advantage of major changes, like cross-border leagues, that are bound to come about in the future.

I am not being defeatist – I still believe that we have the opportunity, because of who we are and how we run our club, to win the title every season and be semi-regulars in the CL groups – it will take clever management of our resources, on, and off, the park – I believe we have the right people in charge, so let’s get behind them.
