  1. So that’s what circa £700m gets you!! Get your finger out Peter :-p

First half was the best performance I ‘be seen from a visiting team to CP since their performance in 95. We were dreadful in the first half, couldn’t pass the ball to a teammate. All of our problems in European football over the last few years are still there. A midfield who can’t pass, give possession away cheaply, put pressure on the defence and starve the forwards of service.

Rabiot and Verratti gave a master class that Xavi and Iniesta would have been proud of. A simple 5-10 yard pass and move into space. We get it and try an impossible pass through bodies, or just dally and get possession pickpocketed.

A good lesson for our youngsters, but only if they learn.

  2. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Just back from game. We got our ass kicked at home. Now we know how other Scottish teams feel when we play them.

    Positives

    1) Ralston and 2) Tierney.

    Negatives?

    1) Wrong tactics. ‘Punchers chance’ cliche heard often before the game. Punchers take risks (and hits) to land their own licks. Too passive.

    2) Season ticket increase – my season tickets (and everyone elses) each went up by two Euros because of that halfwit who ran on to the pitch. Time for Celtic to raise civil cases against individuals whose behaviour results in fines. Bankrupt one bugger and it will stop.

    Hail hail

    Interesting idea.

Wonder if there`s something of that nature going on behind the scenes.

    ——————————————————————————————————————–

I very much doubt as I believe most clubs like our own are only too happy to take a ritual humping as long as we get the crumbs falling off the rich man’s table. In domestic terms that’s enough to maintain the gap between ourselves and the rest which in turn guarantees another tilt at qualifying for the CL next year and the year after that and so on and so on. A sort of footballing equivalent of Groundhog Day. Personally, I have ducked out of this recurring nightmare and can always find a better way to occupy my time on CL nights.

  4. Because my stream was crap tonight,I watched a slightly better Bayern one.Anderlecht are no world beaters.A much more even game against them.PSG,way out of our league.Hopefully,Moussa and Dedryk back.

This is how most fans feel in Scotland, after taking a humping from us.We will get over it.A result in Belgium to look forward to after we take it out on the scum.

  5. didn’t want an english team prior to the draw for the section but in hindsight i feel we play better against them without fear and with the english/scottish rivalry at stake but hey ho tonights opponents are on different level from us and ours i feel is europa at best to compete.

  6. Well Well Well

Surprisingly I am not as depressed as I possibly should be by that result.

If Celtic played crap and were much below their usual standards I ccould bitch and moan about this one and that one and try to make myself feel better at their expense.

But the game I saw was one where lots of Celts expended great efffort, tried very hard to be brave on the ball, and kept on keeping on even when it looked hopeless and the critical part of the crowd was quitting in droves.

With the possible exception of Stuart Armstrong, no one was way below their usual standards tonight. The difference, as it was with Barca last year, and as it could have been with Man City, Man U and many others over the years, is that they are two or three levels above us. Even if we raise our game by one level and they are one level blow their best, that just makes it competitive and gives us a chance.

But 9 times out of 10 these elite players bring their A game and they did tonight. Their passing when faced with a high press was exceptional. Their midfield 5 yard pass routines with instant control meant that all the earnest efforts of Broony and N’tcham got scarce rewards.

We were well beaten by a much better team. We can cry and scapegoat OR we can hide ourselves away from CL and avoid the risk of such drubbings, or we can rejoice in being there and aiming for a one-off good night and a fair fight for 3rd place and a Europa slot.

I know that’s not the greatest rallying call in the world but it is what reality tells me it is. We suck this up and go again. Starting on Saturday against Ross and building back up to the trip to Brussels in 2 weeks time where we might win, lose or draw. We are unlikely to lose 5:0 to Anderlecht but it will hurt even more to lose 1:0 to them as that result will be harder to take.

Great effort from all Celtic players and most of the crowd.

  7. GreeninbingleyinOslo on

We got beat by a better team – stating the obvious.

But that clown who ran on – he’s just handed UEFA and the SFA everything they need, like a gift from God.

Well done, you p+ick. We’re now looking at a stadium ban. And the status of Celtic supporters all over the world is diminished because of you.

    Well played.

  8. Hope BR sticks with Tony Ralston over the next few games up to and including Anderlecht away. He will have learned more tonight than in a dozen domestic games. Him, KT and Jozo (average age 20) are the future and should be given as much game time together as possible.

  9. PSG were brilliant in 95, even better tonight, we looked every inch a pot 4 team but no shame in that, our double header against Anderlecht is of more importance than tonight’s game,

  10. Just on to wish Mike In Toronto all the best for the rest of his celtic (small c) odyssey. Pleasant evening spent in a ‘café’ in Dublin city centre with Almore and MIT – they do exist! The café that is, no doubting the CQN stalwarts. Hope the rest of the MIT tag team sieze the baton and lead him to further historical delights.

OÍche mhaith to one and all agus Hail Hail to celts everywhere.

  11. 60,000 better managers than BR on the internet no doubt?

No intention of reading back but a good idea of whats there.

Knew within a few minutes we were chasing shadows and PSG are the new Barca, too many in the Celtic side didn’t raise our game against the better standard of opposition and the pressure they exerted in the first half to kill the game has rarely been seen at CP.

Plenty of ‘escape goats‘ over the next few days but the group stage was always about two games against Anderlecht as soon as the draw was made , tonights scoreline is as irrelevant as it is disappointing.

If we’d only signed a CB? – it really wouldn’t have made a blind bit of difference BR shuffled the players we have and we will always come up short playing expansive pressing football against obscenely more wealthy clubs.

says a lot when M.O.M was Anthony Ralston

p.s. very pleased and privileged to have met CorkCelt and his friend Mike before the game.

  12. MACJAY@10-11

I posted last night that the huge increase in Celtic’s value was strange.

I feel that European participation and the money we make does not support that big a rise.

As we also seem to be on a collision course with the SFA and will probably face a backlash from our corrupt environment our future profits seem imperiled.

Also the resigning of Joso for a few years was unusual that a player sought after by EPL and Italian teams committed to another 4 years.

  13. SHOCK HORROR: After game one of the CL group stage the pot 4 team is bottom of the group on goal difference. If we are any better off after game six (even by virtue of a 0-0 at home and 1-1 away v Anderlecht) we will have outperformed according to UEFA’s expected performance algorithm.

It is all essentially an irrelevance beyond those two games against Anderlecht. So, whatever happens in the other games, try to enjoy the show, and the sublime talent that will grace Celtic Park. It is after all the only Scottish ground that will be so privileged.

  14. Can’t really add anything to much on here. Tonight was not pretty,as I feared it would be. I don’t think we will score a goal against PSG or Bayern. The group stages of the ,,CL means everything to our club but it matters not a not to the elite clubs. They treat it almost like a pre season tournament. I will still be there though cheering us on v Anderlecht. Take care everyone. Apart from that wee fud who ran on the park, may his next shite be a hedgehog made out of Lego.

  15. Enjoyed that tonight as much as is possible. PSG are a world class team all over the pitch, it was a real education to watch them. Verrati ran the show from start to finish. Thiago Silva, Neymar, Mbappe were all brilliant and and Cavani gave Jozo a nightmare shift.

The scenes at the end were great, PSG fans swapping scarves and signing Celtic Celtic. Heartening stuff.

There’s only one thing for it and that’s to pummel Ross County on Saturday and then we go again.

  16. SFTB @ 11.17

    Not the game I saw.

We slipped, tripped, trod on the ball from the off.

Then we were nowhere near as fit as them.

SB looked on his last legs.

    The MF never tracked back.

Plus when the pressure is on we make mistakes.

First goal — LG steps on the ball because his mind is on the MIB and the Foul on ScS.

Second goal — We have three plus CG active to the ball and still can’t clear.

Heads were not in it from the start.

BR needs to take some of the blame.

We have had a number of poor performances in Europe this season.

Not the progress we should be making.

  17. Tim Malone Will Tell on

    M6BHOY

I posted something similar a few weeks ago. The absurdity of chasing our tails around Europe and Asia in July/August to try and secure a place in a competition we can’t win is just madness personified. Our big hope is to finish third in a competition we can’t win to allow us to access a competition we could win.

Let England, Spain, Italy, France and Germany have their “elite” league – it’s going to happen anyway.

The Europa League (as currently named) should only be open to clubs who aren’t in the big 5 leagues. Why should the likes of Everton, Arsenal and Liverpool be allowed to use the Europa as a safety net when they can outspend the rest of Europe by a factor of 10 to 1. It’s time to think again.

  18. Scunnered tonight. Worried that these kind of results will become the norm. The gap between us the the elite is huge, basically unbridgeable. Yes, we might cause the odd upset on a good night, but teams like PSG are simply on a different planet.

The European game is rigged in their favour too. They – and the other big teams from the big leagues – will get richer and richer. The only danger for UEFA is that they will tire of playing the likes of us and will sod off to form their own league, with games in China, Vietnam, Qatar, and Brazil for fun.

I thought the lighting up on 67 minutes was so poignant. We will never hit those heights again I suspect.

Thought Brendan was philosophical, and I admire his dedication to playing a good brand of football. But unless we hit a seam of oil under Celtic Park we will never be able to compete with the elite, no matter who the manager is.

Of our lads I thought Paddy, Kieran, and A Ralston showed great heart. Brown was class, though hopelessly outgunned. Leigh worked hard. Stuart Armstrong: perhaps not as good as he or his agent think…

PSG: 100% quality in every position. Not a weak link in the team. Neymar however is a horrible little runt, the epitome of what’s wrong with football. It’s fitting he’s ended up at such a shady outfit.

  19. BACK TO BASICS – GLASS HALF FULL on 12TH SEPTEMBER 2017 11:07 PM

    ****

So you think the answer to the complex issue of nutters invading the pitch is to bankrupt them? And that that single act would solve the problem?

Quite apart from the illogicality, you see no negative PR impact there? The public would just accept Celtic making someone homeless? And how would it stop anything? You think the guy made a cool, rational assessment before running on? Nothing to do with bevvy?

We’ve all had a tough night but spare us the easy solutions.

  20. In 95 Rai ran the show for PSG, tonight it was Rabiot. Similar players, tall, elegant midfielders who seem to have all the time in the world when on the ball. Simply strolled through the game tonight, simple pass and move, simple pass and move, then the occasional killer pass like the one for the first goal.

  21. Brilliant performance from PSG. Their triangular passing, first touch flicks and back heels, utter calmness in possession at the back, passing to inside runners, strength in the tackle and sheer speed were simply world class. Many times they made us look foolish.

Despite all that, we were disappointing. Our reactions were like molasses. Armstrong looked painfully slow, Ntcham’s ball control was poor, and Patrick ran into alleys followed by three defenders. Neither Patrick or Sinclair were well supported in possession. Our passing and ball retention, particularly in the first half, was very poor.

And when are we going to learn to take corners beyond the reach of a goalkeeper? And what was Jozo doing for the penalty? Suicide.

It seems strange, given how utterly superior the opposition, but we had chances. We just blew them. Brownie covered more ground than anyone on the park, Ralston did well, and Patrick, Griff and Sinclair tried very hard. Thought we might have seen McGregor tonight for his quick movement of the ball.

Did we learn anything from the 7-0 Barca thrashing? I’m not sure. A 10 man Anderlecht team put up a creditable performance in Munich, are no mugs, and will be well up for the next game.

Interestingly, they have Onyekuru in their lineup. He scored 2 at the weekend and will be a threat to our central defense, which hopefully will see the return of Boyata.

    Govan X Bhoy

I was at the 95 game and true, they were brilliant.

I only saw tonight on the TV, not live. I thought we might surprise them, but they were two steps ahead every time.

    A lesson.

  23. Gordon – can be faulted for any of the goals. Made some good saves and distribution was fine.

Ralston – given a hard time by Neymar, but also gave Neymar a hard time. Good.

Lustig – mostly good. Even remained calm trying to pass out in tight spots. Unfortunate with the o.g.

Simunovic – didn’t see what happened at the pen. Ball was well over hit so if he did something that deserved a pen then that is poor. Thought he got better and better as the game went on

Tierney – left exposed in the first half when, I expect under instructions, he defended narrow rather than wide and Sinclair seemed to also be inside. Storming second half.

Roberts – brilliant until he ran out of tricks, steam and support from others.

Brown – excellent game mostly. Especially second half.

N’tcham – poor first half, played too far forward I thought. Came on to a really good game in the second half.

Armstrong – not up to speed. Seemed to be laboured in his running from the beginning. Was he carrying an injury?

Sinclair – defensively didn’t cover the wide man. Attacking wise in the first half seemed to be trying too hard. Like Tierney, had a storming second half.

Griffiths – had little to work with. But work he did. Great free kick and a couple of other good moments. Tough gig. Did well.

Rogic – never caught up with the speed of the game but still some magic moments. Keeper made a good save from long range effort.

Forrest – not in the game much. Through no fault of his own.

Edouard – good experience for him. Didn’t seem overawed but like Griff, it was a tough gig.

Gotta say, their 5th goal was a peach. Super delivery and I have no idea how Cavani was able to get the header into the far top corner from his position. Brilliant.

Glad we gave them a tough second half. Shame the o.g. seemed to know the stuffing out of what was looking like a credible 0-0 45 minutes.

  24. Ouch! That was a sore one tonight.

They are some team and hardly broke sweat all night. Lesson learned hopefully.

    Must do much better.

  25. Just in.

They are a fantastic team with a style that looks graceful yet is clinical.Rabiot is the best player i’ve watched since Barca were in full pomp.A joy to behold.

I’ve been more upset after losing games by 1 or 2 goals, sometimes the other team is just far better. They did to us what we do to teams in our league but with a touch more class.

Hopefully it was a valuable lesson for our manager, players and supporters.

    Rabiot…wow.

Well that was a real Football lesson, credit where credit is due, awesome performance from PSG

Radiot, Veratti and that 18year old Mbappe, we have just witnessed the next world football superstar in my opinion

Incidentally our own 18yr old Anthony Ralston, for a European debut, and playing against a diving horrible (blleeep) very well done Bhoy, you will have learned enormously from that, and good to see you stand up to that horrible player at the end – the future is bright Green and White for you :-)

A harsh lesson for us, but under Brendan we will learn from this and move on

    Hail Hail

  29. Gary67,

Neymar is a horrible player. Off the ball he barges into players and tries to noise them up (did it with Brown in the second half, who wisely ignored him).

He whines to the ref constantly and is only ever a second or so from falling over with no-one near him. His transfer just about sums up how corrupt the game has become.

Messi is a better player, takes the hits, but plays every game with class and dedication. Cristiano moans a lot but is ruthlessly dedicated to his game and has a good heart (does a lot of quiet charity work I believe).

Neymar is just awful. I’d be happy if I never saw him at Celtic Park ever again.
