I said last week that I was worried about the defence but that we would have enough goals in the team to get through the tie. Still expect that to be the case.

I am assuming Lustig will be available for AEK but not Boyata. Hope that will be enough. Would have liked another body in. Hopefully Simunovic has got his mad moment out of the way.

Reckon Odsonne could set some scoring records this season.

  2. Go tell the Spartim on

I’ll readily admit i dont rate Hendry nor McGinn, but i keep that to myself during games (Hendry) and obviously blogs for afterwards. Learned musings on here suggest that both senior CB will be leaving, I would hope that if we do replace both of these players that at least one is a step up than what we have. Id also hope that i will see the day that we, as a support, can relax with the quality of the team pre qualifiers, in my honest opinion we are nowhere near that stage yet. (Bedwetters will always be bedwetters regardless of how good (or not) we are)

    Yes.

  4. There are dangers in swinging from the unjustified doom of yesterday (“manager calling out the suits” plus “inadequate defence and mentality”) to the over-optimism of today.

Now, I am as delighted as the next Celt to get a good to very good first leg score and I certainly will not dismiss either Alashkert or Rosenborg as pub teams, BUT……

These were the ties for which we were clear favoutites and it looks like we will justify this by winning through. The signs were there that the coaches and sports scientists, despite the intervention of a WC year, have found ways to better condition the non WC-squad, and added 2 WC perfomers in the lightly-raced Gamboa and the sub Tom Rogic, to be at a higher level earlier in our “pre-season” than we have shown in previous years. Celtic looked better in the friendlies than we have in our past couple of years.

If we go through to face AEK, as I expect we will, we will probably still be favourites but we will be slight favourites and it will be more appropriate to judge whether we are reaching the levels we are trying to reach, when we can put away teams that are as good, if not better than us.

And, of course, if we get past the Greeks, there is no guarantee that we will be favourites in the 4th qualifying tie. teams like Young Boys (Swi), Zagreb (Cro), RS (Belgrade) and Qarabag (Aze) have good credentials. Teams like Midtjylland, Ludogorets, Cluj, BAT and Malmo all come from comparable peripheral leagues and will feel batle-hardened by having got through 3 tough qualifiers themselves, in most cases. ven the so-called weaker ties- Shkendija vs Tirasapol or Legia vs Trnava will be testers.

So, as usual, my conclusion is that we have been neither as brilliant nor as pathetic as portrayed but it is great that, thus far, we have improved.

Plenty of banana skins to negotiate though.

P.S. Rather than bemoan a less-than-stellar performance from Broony (he was not poor just not one of our stars), I will take heart that so many of our “non-leaders” (McGregor, Forrest, Edouard, Sinclair, Ajer, Gamboa, N’tcham and 2nd half Tierney) stepped up to take this leadership strain. Those guys have learned from being around Broony. Scott did not have to “do it all” last night as he ahd to last season in dragging a team up by its bootstraps.

I am aff oot now to enjoy the first real day off on my semi-retirement (only working a 3 day week from here on in) which kicked in at the start of July but, as I was on holiday then, I did not notice any difference till today.

And Glasgow has put the sun on specially for me too :-)

  5. Both players are different in style. Armstrong became more attacking aware under BR. Dont see that in JMcG but may be proved wrong. To me JMcG needs to add a lot more to his game than SA had to.

Well little Miss is certainly enjoying learning the game and loving our games at Celtic Park.

Open jaw moment for me last night was when she said,

That was some lovely set up play by Scotty to slot big Eduoard in for a calm finish.

    Speechless!!

  7. I think most would agree that we started poorly last night.

Lack of energy, bite and control put us on the back foot.

Disapointed at the attitude to defend a slow build up.

We seemed to tke the hit of the counter attack and clear only to be put under more pressure by the slowly developing second stage of the attack — SB and ON were very slow at countering the first and pressing the second. We seemed to have more time to defend but less understanding of who was supposed to do what.

oh for 1997 and to have a MR character riding to the rescue — MC never fitted the bill 6 months ago and for whatever reason he has not had the opportunity to show what he can do.

No matter the situation with DB and JS we need to invest in the CB position.

The whole backline last night would benefit from more experience beside them.

We are a good going on very good team with a glass jaw that gives just about everyone a chance against us.

Next week will be tricky but if we turn up we should win.

Interesting to see how they respond — on the front foot the looked OK.

Put under pressure and they shrank before our very eyes.

More to come — the rust is being blown away with every game.

BSR @ 12.38…good post!……(ye kin get yersel banned fur that). Common sense!…the team is improving. Last night also showed we have a bit of bottle now…previous teams may have panicked somewhat after losing an early goal but it seemed to push the guys on to go and dominate the game…I hope Jozo and Dedryck stay on…along with Kriss, Hendry, Lustig and Gamboa, they can cover right-back and centre-back positions…and of course we have our very own power-pack on the left…When this transfer period ends we will have a clearer picture of ‘what’s what’….(whatever that is)…saludos

  9. Well done Brendan on moving Jamsie out the wing and changing the whole complexion of the game. Thought our young CB’S settled down and took opportunity to break forward (apart for their goal) pretty well. Don’t know who did the scouting/recommendations for the Tri-umpherate of Frenchmen they did a helluva job.

Can anyone tell me if any other club “in the world” had 2 no-use right backs playing in the world cup in Russia

Should the Mc.Ginn transfer finally transpire, one thing we would be investing in is continuity.

If he dons the Hoops, I would imagine that he would consider himself “home”, at least for a few years.

We have to consider the probable situation where Brown retires and Ntcham and Kouassi move on, in the short to medium term. That is three players who have a similar style to the Hibs player.

This is when a successful Mc.Ginn can provide the stability and leadership in a new midfield.

    Just a thought.

Well balanced stuff as is your approach to retirement.

I did 3 days after an initial break doing voluntary for SCIAF then after another hiatus a 2 day stint in the care sector.

I found it excellent preparation for full retirement where I find myself with too much to do and not enough day to do it in. :)

The great upside is I’m in charge of having no time. :) :)

However your credibility has been diluted greatly today – suggesting a 3 day week is a great work life balance – surely zero day week is far more desirable !!!

Im currently on 3 days and finding those 3 days get in the way — how did I ever manage the previous 40 years when working 5 days !!

  19. Apparently, Man Utd have lodged a bid with Leicester City of £65m, ( yes, that’s £65,000,000 ) for ‘Slabhead’ Harry Mcguire. Word is they’ll need to up their offer and break the world record fee for a defender.

The lunatics have taken over the asylum.

In other MUTV news, for all the Man U fans out there, wonderful to see Sir Alex Ferguson in a video released today, thanking all medical staff who looked after him following his brain haemorrhage, and also thanking all well-wishers for their messages.

The lack of any news for weeks and weeks was worrying, but delighted to see him speak on camera. ?

What is the prognosis on Dembele and Griffiths? Eddy has been class but best to spread the goalscoring burden and have as many options as possible, especially given the number of games in a short period of time.

CELTIC will face Friday night football in Paisley when they meet newly-promoted St Mirren for the first time this season. Brendan Rodgers’ side will take on St Mirren, now managed by former Celt, Alan Stubbs, on Friday, September 14 (KO: 7.45pm) at St Mirren Park.

Celtic’s away game against Kilmarnock has also been changed, to Sunday, September 23, with a 12.30pm kick-off at Rugby Park.

  25. It’s easy to lapse into hyperbole after good early season performances so let me preface my comments by saying I don’t think we’ll make a dent in the CL beyond the group stages this year.

    However….

The strong conviction that we should prepare for some special moments this season is forming. Already the team is functioning to a very high level. The quality of football from minute 20-90 was exceptional. Sustained high tempo, quick passing, one touch control and second touch to move it on. Every pass played with a purpose.

If this is where we are, in what is still pre season domestically, then it bodes very, very well. The beauty of this situation is that BR and his staff seem to have instilled such high standards that it is inconceivable there will no be further improvement.

In Eduard, Ntcham and Tierney we have top class footballers of uncommon gifts. Ajer and McGregor are quietly excellent, while Forrest and Brown are 8 out of ten and occasionally better, every single week.

The nature of European club football at the top end makes a prolonged run unlikely, but in another age this crop, under this manager, would go far.

In Scotland, Hibs and Aberdeen are improving, determined and will provide us with good quality games, but the class and firepower is concentrated heavily at Celtic Park . I cannot envisage for a second that Gerrards team will be prepared enough, mentally tough enough, or good enough to lay a glove on Celtic.

Football is about winning but we all know Celtic fans are bred on doing it a certain way. Last night just whet the appetite for a memorable season ahead.

  26. Just a thought!!! Where exactly will McGinn play in our team and who does he replace, now.

Out of interest, how many matches have you seen him play? The only time I’ve seen him is against us. And maybe once on TV for Scotland. Therefore I find it hard to have a definitive view on the player either way, particularly given the fact that he is young and not yet anywhere near his peak.

The only question I have is where does he fit in but I imagine he is being targeted with the medium term in view – Brooney won’t go on forever and the likes of Bitton, Allan, Christie, will leave before too long you’d imagine.

  28. KINGLUBO on 26TH JULY 2018 3:47 PM

Are we only allowed one player per position?

A team that plays around 60 games a season, and usually has 3, sometimes 4, central midfielders in their starting 11 need at least 6 players to cover the various roles in that area. We had 6 last season although we relied on Brown and McGregor too much (over 50 games each), Armstrong has left so we’re one short in squad. McGinn can sit deep or play box to box. He his infinitely better than anyone we have at set piece delivery (which was shocking last season and looks no better in first few games this season).

Agree re. Kouassi, would like to see him a lot more this season as well.

    Brown, Ntcham, McGregor

    Kouassi, McGinn, Rogic

Central midfield sorted, concentrate on getting the defence sorted now.

  29. weebobbycollins

    thanks, for that.

Celtic have had some great managers since 1994 all of them have had to contend with disparity in football, a disparity that grows by the season and in simple terms, the rich get richer whilst obstacles will be placed in front of small countrys including this one.

That’s the system whether its coefficency or just plain money football will never be the same again, and for Celtic to compete its domestic bliss and baby European size steps, ahead of Aberdeen who play ‘seeded’ favourites Burnley tonight, a club that haven’t featured in European Football of any kind since ironically, 1967.

Yet a look around the city, the faces, the workplace, the internet , or Celtic Park , on match day there has never been a more vibrant legitimate, successful, well to do, happy, football club in my lifetime, our club has flourished.

    Carpe Diem CSC
