    Totally agree! Kampel was MOTM by a country mile. Brilliant wee player. Hope he is in our price range? The type of player we need, like Greg Stewart Dundee on Saturday.

    Really sorry I missed you Fhriend.

    A thousand apologies.

    Traffic was a nightmare and you’d gone by the time I got to the Corner.

    Another time. Soon I hope.

    Cheers,

    That’s the definitive answer I was looking for – and as I thought about it, the only workable solution.

    Just wanted to be clear.

    That will really disgruntle…………English biding folks who get done in Scotland between 50 and 80 on the blood.

    That well known pressure group….ach shut up!

    The only people who are to blame for our current situ are the suits.

    I have never wavered from that, and never will.

    All those who are against RD are way off the mark, he is a product of the downsizing, it’s no his fault.

    Lenny told Dermo a while back….and it’s a quote from his mouth.

    “”” To be fair Dermot, you sold all my best players and brought in shite “””

    I know who imo are to blame, and it’s not Ronny.

  5. Forest was probably our brightest light in a very mediocre performance against Dundee on Saturday.

    Why, oh why was he dropped for McGregor tonight?

    I thought Efe had a really good game (though I’ll need to watch a re run of the goals before saying just how good!)

    Brown worked his socks off in the second half and his drive and closing down shifted the game in our favour for large spells.

    Izzy was excellent going forward but he really needs Stokes to match his guile with graft if the partnership is to be what it could be.

    I’m absolutely delighted to be in Europe after Christmas but I’m still hugely unconvinced by Ronny.

    Ronny and every other keyboard manager is entitled to their favourites. For me, without Commons in the side (and I mean playing him from the start every week) we are massively limited in our creativity and I think that’s been evident in many games this season.

  6. Nye bevan

    I watched them lose at lower league burley in Anglo Scottish cup and at many other grounds and at home in front of less than 20000 most weeks. They were dire until provan and McLeod got it together.

  7. Other than at the game I haven’t seen any footage of the goals. Listening to Radio Scotland on the way back English blamed Efe for their first two goals. Was he at fault, not obvious from my seat.

  8. When will Charlie play like the Mulgrew we saw against Ireland….. What’s his problem with wearing the hoops…. Maybe give him a navy blue vest to wear on Sunday and see the transformation.

  9. Just back. Tonight proved what RD has been saying is correct. Fitness and pace are essential in the modern game. Speed not only physical but mental. Allied this to basic technique and you have a team capable of competing with the likes of Salzburg, Legia and Maribor.

    Too many of our players lack fitness, lack pace and more worryingly lack basic technique that allows you to pass the ball to a teammate when under pressure.

    Stokes, Mulgrew, McGregor, Matthews, Izaguirre, Ambrose, Commons are not good enough to compete against average European teams we are now losing to on a regular basis.

    Thank god we’re not in the CL this season, we’d have been humiliated.

    At least come the last 32 we will have Guidetti eligible, Lustig & Denayer back, and a fully fit Forrest. Add a couple of signings in January to those four and we’ll be a different team.

    PS Soriani and Alan’s combined transfer fees is the same that we paid for Pukki or Scepovic or Bangura or Balde. It’s not just spending money, it’s how you spend it!

  12. Delighted we are through! Thought we were good value for a draw and played really well for long periods.

    We are where we are, which is still in four competitions. New manager and a team is transition, we are doing okay.

    Some folk have short memories. I remember being 17 and celtic v fc tirol being the best European night I had been too. I remember watching celtic in the champions league with total disbelief we were in it. Been watching celtic long enough to be grateful when things go your way even if its not perfect.

    Looking forward to catching the game on Sunday and back to paradise on Wednesday.

    McGregor scored some good goals months ago …..has done nothing since

    Scarcely merits a place on gone bench yet starts most weeks …

    Don’t get it

  14. Been back for a wee while and reading the last few pages. Pretty rubbish game of fitba but some thoughts on the game:

    We looked shell-shocked in the first 25 minutes or so.

    The linesman and official behind the goal were awful in the first half and the ref was awful the whole game..

    The Crowd were right behind the team for the whole match.

    If we got a second goal I think we would have gone on to win the game.

    Calum McGregor should have been hooked at half time.

    Tonight would have been Sammi’s night because we lacked an out ball apart from Griffiths and Johansen and they couldn’t hold anything.

    Izzy hit 2 good crosses all night – one was the assist and the other was a Griffiths header that made their keeper pull off a good save. Got into some good positions as the match went on but not good enough of a delivery.

    Matthews didn’t join in any attacking moves at all.

    Efe had some bombscare moments but looked better than Virgil.

    Kampl had a great game for them but if you give a good player time and space and don’t track their runs they will pull the strings.

    Wasn’t too impressed with Soriano and Alan was diving all over the place.

    Scott Brown was trying his best to drag us back into it.

    Griffiths chased everything but we need more at this level.

    I’d like to see Tonev given a run in the team. He gave more than Stokes in 20 minutes and seems to have a good understanding with Izzy having played only a few games together.

    We desperately need a mobile strong defensive midfielder and a creative midfielder in January.

  15. Shocking start tonight then we got back into it and gave it a real go and almost equalised throgh Leigh Griffith’s header but het we are through to the next rounf and in any cup football that’s all that matters

    Burnley 78-

    re your comment about Celtic only qualifying for Europe on 6 occasions in the last 34 years. That may be so but it doesn`t automatically follow that this current Celtic team is better than some of those that failed to make it beyond Christmas in Europe or imply that we are now living through some kind of golden era.

    In the past, especially in the days when European football was a straight knock out format we were often the victims of unfortunate draws or outright bad luck. Some examples:-

    Celtic 2001 eliminated from UEFA Cup on penalties by Valencia (who had been beaten CL finalists the year before);

    Celtic 1997 (the team that stopped the 10) eliminated from UEFA on away goals by Liverpool;

    Celtic 1995 (1 defeat all season in the league) eliminated from CWC by the dominant Paris Saint Germain team of that era;

    Celtic 1992 eliminated from UEFA by Dortmund having already beaten another Bundesliga team, Cologne, to progress that far;

    Celtic 1988 eliminated from European Cup by Werder Bremen;

    Celtic 1986 eliminated from European Cup by a Dynamo Kiev side that had the likes of Oleg Blokhin;

    Celtic 1985 eliminated from ECWC by Atletico Madrid;

    Celtic 1984 cheated out of ECWC by Rapid Vienna;

    Celtic 1983 eliminated from UEFA Cup by Nottm Forest (having pumped Sporting Lisbon 5-0 to get that far);

    Celtic 1982 eliminated from European Cup by Real Sociedad (having beaten Ajax to get that far);

    Celtic 1981 eliminated from European Cup by Juventus

    All of these teams (except Rapid Vienna) are of a different class compared to the teams we have faced this season in Europe.

  17. theoriginalsadiesbhoy

    Still watching the recording and Griffiths looks as hard working as he did live but seriously lacking in class. Full marks for effort but a good striker would put at least one of those chances away. Back four? Easily distracted. We are better than this performance tonight. Mind you they were a good outfit up front. Dodgy at the back. We should have done better. Guidetti?

    Thanks for giving me the excuse to watch this again.

    Forgot about the Van Vossen Czech miss, but that 2nd goal from Pele is still one of my favourite non-Celtic goals.

    And this was them just warming up in the group stages.

  20. sunny calmachie 22.21 thankyou. just as i see things. perhaps you and i would make a good ronny and jonny.

  21. Going by the not very scientific method of comparing current squads on transfermarkt.

    Out average player value is £1.58M

    Salzburg’s is £2.13M

    I think the notable part though is that out highest valued player is £4.4M vs £7.9M for them. They have 5 players with higher values than ours.

    Our squad is far bigger than theirs which doesn’t help.

    Our starting line-up valued at approx £26M vs £40.5M for Salzburg. Nearly their entire squad value is in the starting line up. Lower quantity with higher quality in the starting line-up. Essentially £1M+ per position better.
