Last words from me tonight,4-2 side who had big Roy

    dreadful,nobody say’s a word,I say our present side is

Can’t disagree with that statement it’s the ones who don’t even try to mask their average skill with effort that frustrate me, and as for those with slightly above average skill I.e Mr VVD who struts about the park thinking he is better than they actually is, really pisses me off.If we get anywhere near the figures quoted for him we should take it. Watching his performances over the last few games his stock is certainly not rising, cash in now.

Just in and thought we were on to a hiding first half. I tell you what this is Ronnie’s lucky tournament so don’t be too surprised if he gets them far. Glass of wine then bawbaw time!

Still watching the recording and Griffiths looks as hard working as he did live but seriously lacking in class. Full marks for effort but a good striker would put at least one of those chances away. Back four? Easily distracted. We are better than this performance tonight. Mind you they were a good outfit up front. Dodgy at the back. We should have done better. Guidetti?

    ………………………….

Agree with you. Griffiths did well I thought but doubt if he is the answer. I think Guidetti is but we need strengthened in other areas if we have any chance of proceeding beyond the next round. I forgot to praise Izzy earlier, thought had a great game.

Ref was a nightmare. I’m sure I read somewhere that Besiktas were suing him for the eay he handled one of their recent derby games in Turkey.

That’s been our problem for years since the JP/PL axis have had far too much influence on signings, the buy them cheap stack them high approach.

Just had an irritating stickler-for-detail thought as I was driving and listening to the radio this afternoon. (And haven’t had more than one in a row for a couple of weeks.)

Watched the game tonight – to be honest, didn’t know what to make of it!

  9. Was it just me that thought we didn’t play that bad after the first 20 minute horror show?

In fact, I thought we were well worthy of at least a point.

First goal massive slice of luck, second goal poor defensively but we weren’t helped by atrocious refereeing in the build up to the goal (in terms of free kicks and throw ins that kept Salzburg in possession)

After we scored, we were the better team in my view.

Despite the defeat, enjoyed the game, atmosphere was decent, some good performances

Pleased with contribution of Griffiths, Johanson and Ambrose

Less pleased with that of VVD and Stokesy, whilst Commons seemed too slow when he came on, but maybe due to his injury recovery

PS Delighted to have qualified. Ultimately, we’ve qualified in second place, and as a Pot 2 team that seems about fair

  10. Stokes? Why is he a first pick? First five touches tonight lost possession. Shocking performance in a season full of shocking performances. I used to be on the decent SPL striker camp but not now. Not even a striker anymore, now the slowest winger in football!

Yep. I was mainly responding to (I think) Ernie Lynch who asked if they really are a rich team. They’re not rich but they are on paper a margin better than us, and they have two players up from rated at £7M+ which we do not.

  12. January needs to be busy.

Come the end of May, we won’t have any centre halves (probably). JD will go back, vvd will depart.

If we don’t plan ahead, it’s going to be the same qualification roulette we had this year. New guys need time to settle (see Lustig, M).

Or we play Effe and Charlie with no back up?

January. We need to start a new strategy in January.

Agreed…….with Lustig and Guidetti playing in the last 32, we will improve …… just back in from the game ….great opponents tonight…..thought Izzi tried his heart out tonight….if some of the others put in his effort, we would be fine…..if only he would improve his crossing a wee bit …. !!!!!!!!

  14. First 20 minutes, movement from Salzburg players, quick, one touch pass, getting it back, passing on, great technique, this is the standard of football at European level, but Salzburg are not near a CL last 8 level, and we are not any where near Salzburg level at this moment, not being negative here, just looking at this moment in time

I thought on a number of occasions tonight that VVD was a lazy bassa. Very disappointing and definitely underperforming. Much more of that and he can go any time as far as I’m concerned. I’m away aff oot noo because I detect distinct mine shafting tendencies developing in my normally positive psyche.

HH all good Tims. And I especially include vmhan.

  16. Wee bit late in getting in .Once you get seated you look at the team on the field….saying to myself wheres Forrest…..must be his hamstring…..then appears 2nd half…..why o why o why…….team starts to play when McGregor goes off, hate to criticise the guy but he has been carrying the young guy “tag” all season…..experienced players sitting on the bench why o why o why……..wrong formation from kick off…….I think the “young guy” needs a longish rest.

  17. Mc Gregor needs to be rested. I remember Dalglish came in and starred, then went dramatically flat. Big Jock benched him, then gradually re-introduced him. Not uncommon for a young player to fade.

Deserved or not, we are still in Europe. Feels good. I think we will continue to improve.

Aye, the Talisker is no a bad drap either. That Skye peat is unique. I’ve been to the distillery a few times on walking trips. Even the local water has that unique flavour.

  20. Watched the goals over again.

First one is a bit of a freak deflection with their attacker reacting quicker than Efe or VVD.

Second one is too easy a first header (zonal failure or Stokes? You pays yer money…..) and then a ball watching Efe.

Thought then we were on for a hammering.

They play good football. We chased shadows.

2nd half much better. Had Griffiths header gone in we could have snuck a winner.

McGregor. No harm to the lad but shouldn’t have started the game. Def not the 2nd half.

Stokes ain’t gonna scare any defence outwith the SPL.

Griffiths worked his wee socks off.

Their fans were good value and got the credit they deserved from us at the end.

  21. We are still in Europe in the New Year where Guidetti can now strut his stuff. Important to beat Zagreb which can further boost our coefficient points and with the guys back from injury we can give anyone a game. hard to know why we were so off the pace in the first twenty minutes.

  22. Let’s get away from this nonsense that we don’t deserve to have qualified from the Group. We have 8 points. The highest possible number of points for Astra is 7. Therefore we deserve to go through.

I’m sure if we beat Zagreb plenty will put it at the door of them having nothing to play for. Well they had everything to play for tonight and couldn’t get even a point, which we managed. So I’ve no reason not believe we couldn’t have got the point (or better) required over there.

    We have qualified on merit.

  23. Was at the game and have not read back.

Salzburg are better than us. They have better technique, better fitness, more precision about their play and infinitely more pace. Their work ethic is also phenomenal. They deserved their victory.

Ultimately though they have money, serious money and have got together a very hard working, well drilled team, augmented by three special players in Alan (2 goals), Soriano and the magnificent Kampl.

I’m not sure about their finances but I would wager that in those three players most of the cash is invested.

For Celtic, maybe Ronny’s message is not getting through?

We were two down before half the team switched onto what was happening.

Only Stefan pressed as he should but was easily isolated. Eventually Broonie and Chas realised SPL standard was not enough and dragged several decent performances out of their team.

If the video of tonight’s game is not used as an exemplar of how Ronny wants us to play, and is accepted by the players, then either we have the wrong manager or the wrong type of player. Either way problems in terms of progression.

We can work hard at learning the game and improving our system but we will require investment in some real quality.

Guidetti, Lustig and a fit Forrest will help but we are crying out for two midfielders of class.

I’d put all our money in one basket and buy Guidetti and the blonde number 44 and surely somewhere we can find a reliable holding midfielder.

  24. I don’t know where this red bull are a bigger team and we matched them for a bit of the game tonight comes from. celtic had a turnover of 20% more than red bull in 2012. Transfer market rates the squads both at around 50M.

Ronny hasn’t won any game of note this season-nada. Just as expected, he rolls over the SPFL teams (remember Motherwell, 2nd in the league, were knocked out of Europe by an Icelandic part time team this year) , inducing us to forget about the absolute shambles we are in europe this season.

It’s a bad argument to use our lack of qualification after christmas in the last 30 years to emphasise Ronny is doing well. We have qualified playing 2 utter garbage teams with a fraction of our budgets. When we meet someone decent it may be embarrassing, considering a team as crap (yes they are crap) as Legia humiliated us twice.

I think Wayne Biggins, Willie Falconer would probably get a game for us now. What is that, Stokes no euro goals in 19 games?

Bottom line, lets be honest, we are 10M a year poorer in the playing department because of the absence of any competition from any SPFL teams, and the absence of competition / global interest from playing sevco. Thats 5 bosmans on £40k per week, 10 on £20k, take your pick (if you believe PL).

At least the club charges reasonably for the football as opposed to Arsenal, where a season ticket costs in excess of £1000.

Just can’t believe people think it is acceptable to lose 3-1 at home against anyone, let alone a 4th rate nobody shot team. They aren’t that good. They lost 4-2 to Malmo on aggregate to go out CL. Have we been programmed to accept rubbish? I guess so – we have no choice.

If Astra hadn’t won tonight, I think it was a strong possibility we’d be out in third place.

anyway, rant over, HH and hopefully feel better in the morning. Once we roll over a few par ticks and motherwell, we’ll forget about this.

I did the transfermarkt thing a few pages back. Yes our squads are roughly the same value, but ours is 7 players bigger. The big difference is in the starting line-ups.

Ours was worth about £26M vs £40M for Salzburg.

  26. Oh and I wish people wouldn’t use turnover as a measure of ‘richness’.

If our turnover is eg £60M and Salzburg’s £50M but our expenses are £45M and theirs are £30M, who is ‘richer’?
