Cluj rest entire team ahead of Glasgow game, our new defenders

263

At Saturday’s, league game at home to strugglers, Hermanstadt, Cluj manager Dan Petrescu rested every single player who started against Celtic last week.  Whatever modest noises he makes in the media before tomorrow’s game, Cluj are prepared to throw everything into beating Celtic.

They will arrive in Glasgow today planning to hit Celtic on the break, as they did in Romania on Wednesday.  By contrast, Celtic have three days to recover from their comfortable win at Fir Park.

Neil Lennon called it right being critical of how Celtic opened against Motherwell on Saturday.  At times, our passing and long-ball game were reminder of the early 90s.  Fortunately, there was an ocean of talent to put things right.

Defensively there remains a lot of work to do.  Straight from kick off, Motherwell sent a high ball towards Boli Bolingoli, almost certainly trying to put the new full back under pressure.  Boli is no Kieran Tierney, but you and I have been here through discouraging early performances from Moussa Dembele and Virgil van Dijk, so we know to give the lad time, right?

The same goes for Christian Jullien.  Since leaving Toulouse in May, the big centre half had played 106 minutes football before Motherwell.  He was caught underneath the corner Motherwell scored their 91st minute consolation from – not a good look for a towering defender.

By that stage, fatigue would have been his biggest opponent.  Earlier in the game, he looked composed, including when he made a decision to pass across the face of goal to Scott Bain.  Both players will improve as they get up to speed.

Nope but only by exception. The narrative rolled out about the delay would look a lie – both players would and could be signed by now.

Their signing would indicate a poor scouting setup which is no great surprise given Congerton, the leaked list of brainstorming names and the summer intern we brought in. We look amateurish at a time when our buying power has never been greater.

I mean, we didn’t need a second LB until a few days ago…

    We don’t need a 4th CB at all…

We signed a LB from Austria and a CB from France (neither were on the leaked list). Bit harsh.

  4. If we bring in Taylor and McKenna with the excuses we have rolled out for deferring it will tell us that Duff was watching repeats of sportscene in the hotel bedroom. That’s my point.

Let’s see what happens – a Melling is a much better player than Taylor and a traffic cone would be better than that lump of wood Mckenna.

Spend the money Celtic in a market better than Rugby Park or Pittodrie.

  5. Boli Bolingoli

    I like

    young man, new country, culture

working in a different language that is not his own.

    It is not easy

McKenna is not for me, particularly at the price Aberdeen are looking for.

Cosgrove on the other hand is only 22 and has scored 19 league goals in 36 games. Big physical presence which we lack. Initially thought he was just a big raw guy but have seen added subtlety in his game recently.

May have been worth a punt before signing the unknown quantity that is Bayo, although i hope he comes good after(if) injuries clear up .

liked Meling too but he too is small for a fullback??

    ___

He’s the same height as Taylor. So same criticism would apply.

    …………………………..

Often mailigned – he managed to set up the equalizer with the cleverest flicks with the outside of his right foot and then used that wand of a left foot to score arguably the goal of the game.

Nearly called myself the outside of James Forrest’s right foot but his goal dissuaded me…

  9. Meling and Gumny rumours certainly getting traction today.

Polish press quoting Celtic as possible destination for Gumny

  10. When we played Rosenberg Meling played very well. However, the Rosenberg fans claimed that the games against us were the only time that he’d played well.

    Maybe he has improved?

  11. Worry is Gumny is also being linked with Serie A teams. Better hope that interest isn’t serious.

  12. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

According to Wiki Andy Robertson is 1.78m.

    Me neither.

    Abraham Lincoln was 6’4″ (1.93m).

Not convinced he would have made a decent full back though.

Maybe we dodged a bullet there.

    Unlike him.

    Hail hail

  13. Timaloy29

The Polish report mentions that it is bottom half of table Seri-A teams that have the interest. And so far none of those teams are placed to spend £6.5 / £7 million price tag, that Lech Poznan are demanding.

I don’t see us paying that level either tbh

We paid that for Julien. But I do think thats a lot for a fullback with only 2 years left on his deal.

  15. realy concerned at some the SPL players being put forward on here to join or club, are you being serious or having a joke , we are 2 league titles away from creating history and are cash rich , if we can’t buy quality first team starts from this position then something is far wrong

so if tosh is scouting for future players then as i said earlier heaven help us , if Greg John Taylor to give him his sunday name is our first choice then our scouting regime has to change.

Absolutely 100% correct, our shopping list shouldn’t be sheep or Killie players, no thanks

  17. I think it’s highly likely that are first and second choice targets have already turned us down. We’ll be working our way down the list

  18. One more sleep and just under 26 hours till we try to win the game that will then guarantee us another 4 home European ties at least.

  19. Despite the slow start on Saturday, not surprising after a tough Champions League game in Romania a couple of days earlier, Celtic played some nioce football and the quality of the five goals was admirable. I was impressed with young Lewis Morgan and for the first time looked comfortable in a Celtic shirt. Boli also did OK and from what I’ve seen looks like a guy who enjoys his football. Lenny can work to improve some of his technique.

Once again James Forrest showed us some classy stuff and again on the scoresheet after his crucial European scoring exploits midweek.

Young Kris Ajer is shortly on his way to being a 40 million player without a doubt. Celtic with other players like Ryan Christie now have some very valuable assets. There has been critics of Boli after a few matches but so had some of the players mentioned above and the great Scott Brown in his early days at the club and now he is legendary status.

Hopefully Celtic continue this good form against Cluj tomorrow night.

No arsing around be vigilant with these guys on the break. Get the job done.

    ————————————————————————-

We signed Ryan Christie from Inverness Caley.

Matters not a jot whom we buy players from so long as they’re quality.

What I’m saying is the stock of players contained within the staffing of those two teams are crap. Not that we should not shop within our own league.😵

  22. Hunderbirds are Gone on

I will be dreadfully disappointed if we sign McKenna. If it is an effort to save expenditure, it will be a really bad one. £5m or £6m absolutely wasted. I just don’t understand why anybody on this Earth actually thinks he is a good defender. I would not value him at £1m. Baffling.

    🍀⚽️

  23. Signed Broony from Hibs, & Bain from Dundee, and we are sorry we didn’t sign McGinn from Hibs, even though when it was mooted there were quite a few here rubbishing him as no better than what we have.

Whilst Griffiths was a Wolves player he was playing at Hibs before we signed him.

There is a bit of snobbery relating to players from other Scottish teams maybe familiarity breeding contempt.

Reality is that these guys are familiar with the Scottish game and tend to settle in quickly.

We are not guaranteed success, Hendry, Allan but then again we have had a host of dud foreign players as well.

  24. Unfortunately the 5 million it will take to buy McKenna in Scotland is exactly the 5million or so celtic like to pay.

You see it is a 5 million pound player but not necessarily the 5 million pound player wages [30-40k a week] that you might find in England or any other major league.

They can then stick the player on around 15k a week instead of double that .

Really don’t think he is worth more than 3 million.

At that price yes I would take him.

  25. so if we spend big money on a dud , are we spending just for the sake of it to appease ill-informed fans.
