Cognitive Dissonance with Pressley always in middle of controversy

738

Stephen Pressley’s Falkirk team did well at Hampden yesterday but the manager did himself no credit with his half time rant at the referee, who chopped off a perfectly good Celtic goal but annoyed Pressley for awarding a penalty when Thomas Rogne was hauled to the ground.

An irritated Pressley, who always seems to be the one in the middle of any controversy, then gave an inexplicable post-match interview to the BBC, demonstrating as clear a case of Cognitive Dissonance you are likely to find outside of a textbook.  At the time he, apparently, hadn’t seen a TV replay of the penalty incident, made no attempt to claim Darren Dods was innocent of the alleged discretion, nor did he suggest the referee had erred, but he was clearly troubled trying to reconcile these facts with his feeling of being wronged.

To all aspiring Cognitive Dissonance posters in the CQN comments section, new standards have been set. You are a bunch of amateurs with functioning resolution pathways and have no future in the game.

  1. I saw a bit of the game between Gothenberg and Spartak yesterday, Aido didn’t have one of his better games, twice the comentator refered to him being frustrated, can’t be great all the time.

  2. MICHAEL BALL broke the mould at Rangers when he paid THEM £4000 every time he played as they couldn’t afford his transfer fee.

But the former £6.5million Ibrox full-back reckons he’ll continue to be unique because no player at Ibrox would do the same these days.

Ball was signed by ex-Gers gaffer Dick Advocaat in 2001 at a time when money was no object for Sir David Murray.

However, times have changed and with £30 million of debt and the club up for sale, Walter Smith has managed to guide Rangers through one of their most turbulent spells ever.

The first signs of a financial downturn in Govan was six years ago when the club refused to play England star Ball because one more appearance would trigger a £500,000 payment to Everton.

That prompted Murray to persuade his big-money buy to fork out £4000 of his own cash everytime he kicked a ball.

Even now Ball admits he was a soft touch for agreeing to it.

And that’s why he’s adamant none of the Gers’ squad today would even think about following his lead to help them in their time of need.

Free agent Ball said: “I had been travelling with the lads to games but wasn’t playing.

“I remember it was a match at Ibrox when the gaffer Alex McLeish said the chairman wanted to see me – that’s when he put the idea to me.

“Alex asked how it went and I was still a little bit shocked about what had just happened.

“I had agreed to pay £4000 every time I played so they could pay Everton.

“I wasn’t sure if I had got it right. We had a bit of a chuckle about it and later that day I came on as a sub with a few minutes left.

“I remember thinking ‘that’s just cost me four grand’!

“It’s about the type of person you are, whether you’d do something like that now.

“You get players who cash in and leg it without two hoots.

“It’s not great to learn of the money trouble Rangers are in now. I can’t see them spending £6.5m on a left-back again.”

With such a massive burden of dept I cannot for the life of me see Nikica Jelavic being the only player to exit. The poor deluded probably keep logging in to check developments on his pending transfer to Everton for ££££££ – I have a funny feeling that their bad news is building up.

I do despair at those who actually write that they wish for Steven Pressley’s name to be expunged from our records.

Unless of course, this is another wind-up.

Steven Pressley is an ex Celtic player, who came to our club late in his career, and who played centre half and captained Celtic. He also won the Scottish Cup with us.

He later became manager of a small, impoverished and unfashionable Scottish side, turning them into a team that played good football and threatened the duopoly of the two Glasgow teams. Oh and he was overly passionate about his team and any perceived injustice, to the point of intermittent cognitive dissonance.

Now who does that remind me of…what’s his name again?

‘Michael Ball lives with the former presenter of Ready Steady Go!, Cathy McGowan. They met around 1991 and have lived together since 1992. In 2000, in the middle of the night during a house fire, McGowan undoubtedly saved his life by waking him up and getting him out of the house’.

…maybe the ole Fernando Ricksen firework malfunction agane.

Unless it’s a different Michael Ball.

was fuming yesterday when i heard the radio shortbread team talk about it. the usual : if referees give penaltys for players wrestling in the box, then there would be 10 penalties in a game…. utter, utter garbage. the incident yesterday was a penalty all day long. one player trying to manouver, the other rugby tackling him. no question. stonewall veriety. Incidently, they hadn’t seen a replay of any incident at theat point. 5 minutes or so into half time, as murdo anounced, after having seen a replay, that hooper weas 2 yards onside. you’d think that the bbc, covering the game, might have had access to a tv monitor, or at the least, someone relaying the massage to them, that they had seen it and hooper was well onside.

I can only back up my claim with details of the passage in Danny McGrain’s book. I’m not sure how you can back up your source.

But if that is how you remember it then fair enough.

  10. Guys–Declan is a Celtic man at the wind-up. However, he overeggs the pudding with the spelling, otherwise it’s a great spoof. The question is, “Who is Deccy?”. My money’s on Philvus, who has the sort of devious mockery to masquerade as an Orc. Can’t be AhNah–he’d be very close to the original, eg the spoofing of Traynor and Keevins. As they can’t write in the first place or have lost their muse, it’s Philvis?Deccy fr me.

  11. Declan, surely describing Rangers as ´shrewd operators´ and ´very canny business men´ was a joke right? Made laugh.

so let me get this right.

Michael Ball was on the cusp of playing 60 games for Rangers and that would have meant that the huns had to pay Everton 500,000 quid

but this was all solved by Sir Magig Moonbeams negotiated a deal whereby Michael Ball gave Rangers 4000 pound every time he played for them again.

And what about Everton 500,000 quid ?

Sounds like the sort of made up story that only a hun could come up with and swallow swallow ..who was the journalist ?

Did you ever watch Aiden play? Deary me…!

Aye mate, many times. In fact, I’ve also watched McGeady a few times since he left, both for Ireland and for Spartak (just out of curiosity).

He’s simply nowhere near as good as people make out. Excellent ball control (amongst the best in the world, IMO) but no real vision or footballing intelligence. Very wasteful.

For what it’s worth, I have just spoken with a friend who knows Stephen Pressley quite well. Apparently he has expressed his remorse at his behaviour yesterday. Good to hear.

I remember Aiden winning one game in the CL v Benfica. Can’t remember many others. I would say Liam Miller had a bigger influence in CL games for Celtic than Aiden.

Aiden is a good player as was Maloney as was Miller and as is Forrest. Great players win games regularly and score important goals. It’s how wee Jamsie develops in the coming months and years that matter. Our young Bhoys seem to fizzle out. The brutal treatment of SPL defenders and lack of protection from MIB’s don’t help though.

Aiden McGeady also played against at least 2 players when he was winning games single handed …

I thought he was a great player for us and would take him back anytime.. He also left us with £8m to remember him by that patched up financial holes created by Lawwell
