Commercial consequences of Ramsden

717

The commercial consequences of Sunday’s Ramsdens’ Cup Final result didn’t occur to me until Celtic released season ticket news yesterday.  Over the years, when possible, Celtic and Rangers released season ticket renewal notices on the back of a favourable result.

As well as a party at Ibrox on Sunday night, the wheels would have been ready to roll with photographs of newly acquired silverware and a plea from the most expensive failed-yet-retained manager in history to renew early.  There may even have been a price increase this year, slipped in amid the feel-good factor.

There has been a lot of talk about how critical season ticket sales are to Newco Rangers but we are no different.  The circa 40,000 people who commit to support Celtic each season are the rock bed upon which all plans are made.  Sure, Champions League money is critical, but without this volume of season ticket sales there would be no Champions League money.  The season ticket is the Badge of Honour in Scottish football, during these critical years more than any other time.

In 2012 when we campaigned to deny a new club access to an elevated position in Scottish football we did so in the knowledge that competition in the league would be different going forward.  This was our preference.  While actual attendances have often been below season ticket levels I know that to a man, woman and child, everyone who pitches up to watch Celtic appreciates being apart from the scourge which afflicted us for so many years.  This is the way I like my football, long may it last.

After they sang La Marseillaise, they started up with a version excursion of Flower of Scotland – zut alors!!

    If you are around.

I watched your link last night on Sky Sports News GAA spoof.

Absolutely, brilliantly hilarious, especially for anyone with an understanding of Gaelic games.

We needed something to lift the grass roots spirits after the shameful decision from Headquarters.

I heard them boasting today that the five Garth Brooks concert WILL go ahead, even though there has still to be a decision re obtaining a licence.

    Their arrogance is invincible

No. Although it presents difficulties given the PM’s role with the C of E. Did Gordon Brown as a member of C of S excuse himself from those decisions? I’ll need to check when I get in.

Gordon Brown excused himself from most decisions when he was Chancellor and PM, not on religious grounds but because he abdicated nearly all his responsibilities to the spivs in the city.

Glad you enjoyed it. I only watch the big games, quarters onwards or so, so can’t really comment.

I am no apologist for any journalist but perhaps you can tell me why Douglas Fraser is the only SMSM journo named by you.

His brief is Business & Economy Editor and since mid 2012 (by my count) he has done nine articles on the BBC Scotland website about TRIFC/Whyte/Green/Murray/MIH.

In his article in 4 March 2013, he highlighted the 7million shortfall in Green’s first 7 months accounts and questioned whether those losses could be turned round. He points out the bits that are missing from the Green accounts, including no figures for players salaries. No praise for them at all.

In his article on 19 December 2013, he highlighted the chaos at the TRIFC AGM. He again stresses the dysfunctional business model there and his last paragraph is as close as he gets to writing anything positive about the whole mess. I quote..

“However, Wallace made it clear that he intends to go back to get that power ( to investors for a new tranche of funding) in future. Before then, he is aware that he needs to present investors with a convincing case that Rangers has got a grip on its finances and the way it’s run. That’s as a functioning and sustainable business with serious management, as much as a football club with passionate supporters.”

We all know that Wallace & TRIFC failed on all counts and they are in a worse position than they were back then.

The remainder of Fraser’s articles without exception are highly critical of the whole mess at TRIFC, often sarcastically so.

His latest article today is entirely consistent with those. He doesn’t do name calling, or hysterical hyperbole – he lets the ridiculous facts shout out the absurdity of it all. He does not praise Murray in today’s article, rather he lampoons him mercilessly

He may have other articles published elsewhere that I am unaware of, but I have detected no sycophancy in his BBC reports for the last 18 months on any of them – Murray/Green/Whyte/TRIFC/MIH.

Isn’t the centre spot still supposed to be Donegal turf? Or have we done away with that fine oul tradition and replaced it with dammed Saxon turf. German Dutch border grass eh? Surely our so called custodians knew that this was the region governed by Prince William of Orange prior to his stealing the British crown from the good Scottish Catholic King James II. IT is an affront to Celtic supporters everywhere. What did tens of thousands of Celtic players fight 2 world wars for? Yet more damning evidence of the ongoing ethnic cleansing of all things Irish from Parkhead. We continually vote against the election of board members but our wishes are constantly ignored and we have no say (that is apart from a vote in a democratic election ) in the running of our club. That is why I will be voting yes for Celtic Independence at the next AGM.

  25. I remember a few years back at an AICSC meeting we were informed that Celtic were favourably disposed to having 4 sods from the 4 Provinces of Ireland planted at the 4 corner flags at Celtic Park. A debate was even held to nominate the 4 places from where the sods were to be taken from. Ballymote was universally agreed for the Connaught sod and Cashel where my Supporters Club was based was the favourite for the Munster sod. We were starting to make plans for a big local ceremony with media coverage etc. but for some reason the whole plan was shelved. Never found out why but always felt it was a great opportunity missed to give the Clubs Irish fanbase a huge boost.

  26. Damo Lennon – IMO LG does not deserve the hounding he’s getting. We should ask the folks calling his chanting ‘racist’ to explain to us why they believe that. Yes, he was stupid to get involved, but remember, stupid is tough to fix. This is going to take some time.

I remember signing much worse in the jungle but the only thing that I remember that came close to racist was “Who’s the bar steward in the black”. I think the rest was distasteful, hurtful and on reflection embarrassing, but it was fun at the time and we have thankfully moved on. Perhaps my stupidity has been cured after all these years.
