Commons phenomenal contribution

737

You will remember times, not so long ago, when a successful Celtic team went 15 months without keeping a clean sheet away from home in any competition, even against lower league opposition. Already this season we have achieved what until recently was regarded as beyond the club, won two games away from home without conceding.

Helsingborgs are not of the calibre of opponents Celtic can anticipate facing in the group stages of the Champions League (assuming no bizarre reversals), but they disposed of the Polish champions 6-1 on aggregate in the previous qualifying round and are as resourceful as Aalborg or Utrecht.

There was plenty to be pleased with in last night’s but the most striking element was the performance of Kris Commons. He scored goal and was credited with an assist, has scored both our league goals this season and had a further assist against Helsinki; an incredible return for a player who three weeks ago was drawing comment on the size of his shorts!

Bundoran Bhoy – have you been over to meet Wee Oscar yet? Maybe time mate.

Talking with my mother tonight, she is up in Cliffany tonight and is flying home from Derry on Monday. My brother-in-law Attila (you have met him) is flying over to meet her then flying home on the same plane. Great guy!!

  2. Great result last night. Qualifying rounds are all about qualification and performance is always secondary to the result.

That said, there is always something to be learnt from performance. I skimmed the blog last night and was amazed by the post-match comments which aimed cyber arrows in the direction of those who criticised the team during the game. Perfect example of a result blinding people to what happened during the game.

One comment during the game summed it up for me perfectly and should not be forgotten. Our performance last night (save for the last 15 minutes) was on a par with our away performances in Braga, Utrecht and Sion.

Commons scored a terrific goal and, in the end up, we could have scored 5. We also could have been well down at half time thanks to abject defending, little organisation, idiotic passing and naive play.

In European football, possession is key. Treasure it away from home and make certain you don’t needlessly give it to the opposition. It’s all about breaking the momentum of the home team spurred on by their crowd. We showed no ability last night to do that and, against a higher quality team, we will get punished unless we learn to do that.

Hopefully there will be a full house next week to make sure we finish the job.

I suppose it is understandable that there are differing factions at Board level.

I would say that, on balance, that that would be a good thing.

Personally, I think that the present and recent Board members are doing a first class job of directing the club and that includes Peter Lawwell.

I want Celtic to be controlled by hard headed Celtic people, with their emotions in check and not to be swayed by the unaccountable whims and desires of an emotionally charged support.

Their main job is to keep the club in business. Everything else stems from that.

The clamour to sign, or not, A,B,or C is outside of our terms of reference.

We are not privy to all the factors involved in player recruitment or transfers.

Personally, again, I’m happy to leave the business side of the club to people with that knowledge.

Now tactics, substitutions and all other on field matters, then move over Neil, I’m yer man!!!

    As ever, to the point.

Tell me this, we have influence at the sfa I understand, we have PL and ER, are they not in a position to bend a few ears ?

Believe it or not, I am not that bothered about us getting cheated week in week out, I am, but not as much as the game of football being cheated, all for the benefit of one club.

To set up a transparent and accountable system where referees have no hiding place is as easy as needs be, tis not rocket science, it could be done at the stroke of a pen.

What bothers me is the lack of will to change.

We have a few decent young players in scotland coming through these days, and unless they are allowed to play the game, they will be gone soon enough.

Take the referee last night for example, he blew for the slightest infringment, that’s the way the game should be going, I know it’s still a contact sport, but there is contact and downright brutality that our and other players have to endure week in week out in scotland, that is so, so wrong on so many levels.

The desire to change must take presidence over a cartel of the old luj.

    I may be crazy.

But he spent a few bob at Villa, he didn’t spend the money wiseley imo, and he wanted more, didn’t get it and left.

He also left us cos the board wouldn’t back him any more.

I know his wife was seriously ill, but there were problems with money before her diagnosis.

He wanted the board to back him again after Sevilla, they didn’t.

What he did at Sunderland after Bruce wouldn’t have been hard imo, Bruce was brutal.

Sunderland will be a bottom of the table team this season, they won’t be fighting relegation, but they will find their level below the top ten.

As I said I wish him well.

Didn’t spend wisely ? He took villa to top 4/5 in premier league.. Spent what he was given.

I never blame a manager for leaving a club who he has taken as far as he can. Example I thought moyes should have left everton long time ago . Glad he stayed as I like them but for his own personal success the time was right couple seasons ago.

Sunderland will probably be around mid table depending on who they bring in.

I dont think it is significant just now but I see the grass roots of a European franchise emanating from it at some point. They are the conduit between UEFA the clubs and FFP. Without that agreement the will to do it is not recognised.

Rangers have always maintained a reasonable prescence. Scotlands 4 prestigous clubs that have signed up are Celtic Hearts Aberdeen and Rangers.

So a third division club is a fully signed up organisation member of this elite clubs the G24 or what ? The world needs to know ?

Well today they told me decision to be made on it at board meeting end of this month ?

Probably be ditched to A.O.B but I am pursuing a statement of official public Announcement through their media centre.

Its the way of thinking that needs to change and it takes time for new ideas to become accepted. the trick is to change the language from accusation to the need for improvement, the raising of standards.

Put a carrot at the end by offering more money for a higher standard of refs providing a professional service and thinking starts to change. Football however is incredibly slow to adopt new thinking, hence patience and tenacity.

PS. Had I been a Helsingborg supporter I would have been spitting blood at the ref last night. Usually when we have corners or frees into the box the ref blows for a foul at the slightest contact and I get mad. Last night that approach to refereeing worked in our favour and I thought that on another night they get a penalty and Matthews is off.

    Nice change.

Aint seen nuthin yet…..As if what these ratbasturds have done since FEB 14 wasn’t enough, they’re actually gonna get away with this. I don’t know what frustrates me more ….their necks of brass of these orange scum or the dismissive attitude of the supporters of ours and other clubs. Where the hell was the dispute from Spartans & Livi for example….? All talk. In fact why the hell did any vote take place to allow these corrupt tax dodging cnuts into not only SPL but anywhere in Scottish Football…?

German DFB which announced record ST sales today and Bayern have a vested interest in it. FFP that is. They are the main players in the ECA. I suggest you check out their website to get a flavour of the type of front that it is.

They have to move or their entire published remit is distinguished in an instant. Zero credibility.

  20. From KDS:

Just the other day I suggested that all the drama about investors from Lebanon, Monaco, Pakistan, Dubai and Malaysia could be deflecting from the key facts in the Sevco story. The core of the story, I concluded, could lay closer to home. Namely with Ticketus and Whyte.

Closer to home? Like Bearsden perhaps?

Let me introduce you to Mr Brian Stockbridge, Financial Director of The Rangers Football Club Ltd, formerly known as Sevco Scotland Limited.

The quiet man of a takeover saga that began in late February of this year when Duff & Phelps announced they were accepting takeover bids for the soon-to-be-liquidated RFC PLC.

Weeks earlier Mr Stockbridge had transferred from Allenby Capital — where he had been involved in some deals for Ticketus owners Octopus Investments — to join Zeus Capital, who are backed by Octopus.

There is nothing online to suggest that Mr Stockbridge had previously lived or worked in the Glasgow area.

Indeed, late last year he was working in London with Allenby as nominated adviser to Tembusu Investments — a firm owned by convicted bank fraudster Rafat Rizvi which then changed its name to Nova Resources and hired Charles Green as Chairman.

On February 29 Ticketus met with Duff and Phelps and told them they intended to “protect their investment” at Rangers by being willing to “hold talks with any potential new owners”.

On March 5 Brian Stockbridge registered a Change of Name for his own firm, Stockbridge Capital Investments Limited, which had been incorporated on February 20.

The address given was a residential property in – you guessed it – Bearsden.

A house that had been put on the market only weeks earlier by a gentleman of Asian descent who had previously registered a now-dissolved beauty business to the same address.

And it is that Bearsden address that also now appears on Mr Stockbridge’s registration with the Financial Services Authority.

One possible explanation for this (and I do accept there is a fair bit of supposition involved here) is that Mr Stockbridge’s new bosses had sent him up to Jocko-land to pursue a special project. And had even arranged for him to settle down in a new house. So it wasn’t going to be a quick fix.

March 5, I hasten to add, was before even the first deadline had expired for the first bids for the carcass of RFC PLC RIP.

We had Bill Ng, Bill Miller, the Blue Knights and that choob Kennedy Uncle Walter and so on still to appear, then disappear. Many of them complaining of the unstatisfactory nature of their consultations with “representatives” from Ticketus.

Did any of them, I wonder, have talks with a certain Mr Stockbridge at around that time?

Then along came Sevco 5088 Limited, which was incorporated on March 29.

Charles Green was not made a director until May 4, and news of a bid by his Sevco consortium was not made public until May 11.

    So what do I conclude?

Revelling once again in conspiratorial mania, I suggest that the plan to send Brian Stockbridge north to mastermind a takeover bid was hatched by Zeus Capital — and whoever they were working on behalf of — within DAYS of Duff & Phelps beginning the RFC PLC RIP administration process.

Stockbridge was in Glasgow throughout the whole of the takeover pantomime.

Now he’s working quietly behind the scenes on behalf of his paymasters while Chuckie Green creates a noisy distraction.

And if I had to put odds on who was giving Stockbridge his orders, I’d have very short odds on Ticketus.
