Commons phenomenal contribution

You will remember times, not so long ago, when a successful Celtic team went 15 months without keeping a clean sheet away from home in any competition, even against lower league opposition. Already this season we have achieved what until recently was regarded as beyond the club, won two games away from home without conceding.

Helsingborgs are not of the calibre of opponents Celtic can anticipate facing in the group stages of the Champions League (assuming no bizarre reversals), but they disposed of the Polish champions 6-1 on aggregate in the previous qualifying round and are as resourceful as Aalborg or Utrecht.

There was plenty to be pleased with in last night’s but the most striking element was the performance of Kris Commons. He scored goal and was credited with an assist, has scored both our league goals this season and had a further assist against Helsinki; an incredible return for a player who three weeks ago was drawing comment on the size of his shorts!

A few days back, someone posted that we required three seeded clubs to be eliminated at the play off stage, for us to possibly move up from Pot 4 to Pot 3 (all going well of course….)

Does anyone know if the results over Tues/Wed make this any closer to reality?

    Cheers!

  5. Starry,

The Observer used to do a feature called ‘A life in a day of…..’.

They could have had a wealth of material from the old coal and steel towns that would have filled an encyclopaedia!

For instance, when I was four, I went to the Smiddy to see ma Granda who was just about the last Blacksmith in Coatbridge. He raised himself between his two ingles, resting his calloused hands on the red hot surfaces. His hands singed, burned and smelled like a slaughterhouse incinerator. He just smiled…..and lit his pipe with a burning coal.

Outside there was an almighty roar of what was called a flashback when the molten pig iron blew back up the furnace chimney. Everyone ran otherwise you ended up like a refugee from Pompeii – rigid, fossilised and dead!

Sadly Cammy’s canal horse that pulled the barges didn’t know this and as the molten death rain fell down on him he squealed in his death throes. It was a sound I will never forget especially as the red hot lava and slag also formed a pool around him. His feet and legs caught fire. Cammy ran to help him. He perished as well.

My uncle Peter said they were buried thegither in a specially constructed coffin. I think he was ‘joking; about that.

Flashbacks weren’t unusual and the women used to arrive in their shawls checking for their men and then comforting the relations of those who who had been lost.

In Cammy’s case he only had his horse and his horse was an only foal!

Ach I’m rambling now…..but I think of them when I pass the Lobby Dosser sculpture in the West End.

The first time I was in Carfin after they pulled down the Craig I was taking some pictures and couldn’t worked out what was missing until I realised, that night sky of the molten slag orange glow and the sound of the oxygen plant where the sight and sounds of my early life.

Nutcase Leggat has a new blog today and I agree with almost every word of it with regards to Celtic’s benefits.

I disagree about the tripe about bigotry of all other non sevco fans in not allowing the new club a free passage into the SPL but all the stuff he is clearly having nightmares about is very amusing.

I’d post a link but I know a lot of folk don’t care.

I would suggest you read it. It made me laugh and it shows the new realities dawning on the world record 4th division outfit as their measly 10M quid (before tax) team face up to 3 years at least without European football.

The pain is so enjoyable. Schadenfreude is such sweetness.

I live in Hutchesontown Court, just opposite and between the Polis Station and St Francis.

It’s probably all changed since you left. The pubs are few, chippies even fewer, tanning salons a no no, and bookies banned to the outer limits of Tradeston and Govanhill.

Now all we do is grow tomato plants in the climate-change induced all day long sunshine, watch the sheep happily grazing by the crystal clear waters of the holy Clyde, spend winters skiing down the ski slopes over Dixon Blazes and joining in communal hymn singing as the sun goes down on St Andrews Bridge.

We all want the best for Celtic, we just have different ways of expressing it :o) that said, I amn completely against the straight knocking of our players. Worst ‘celtic’ post I saw was soneone saying the were ok about mcmanus getting ko’d by d’arschole (or was it daniel cousin of william) as it meant he wouldn’t be playing for a bit.

Barcabhoy – agree 100% – mulgrew will be a legend, if we use him right. As for bringing in a pujol type player – those feckers are rare, and priced accordingly. We may have to find a diamond in the rough, but we as a team, and as fans, don’t (or can’t afford to ) have such an important position making mistakes. That’s the conundrum.

As for a new bobo: I loved bobo, he was big and fast, but only in a straight line: he had the turning circle of an aircraft carrier – that’s why he struggled with 2 CB set up. We need fast and agile, good recovery speed.

Final point: anyone know anywhere in beirut showing the bhoys?

  19. Interesting article by Phil Mac…

Now a fairly recent F.C. insolvency event has largely went uncovered by t’nternet bams & MSM alike when finding parallels with the RFCia situation.

The reason, at first glance it doesn’t seem to have the contiguity to the R@ngers situation of an Airdrie, Leeds or Florentina.

The Company/Club was not in insolvency, though there was a rather unique and possible defining aspect to this administration.

I’m doing this mainly from memory so as per… looking/hoping for clarification.

Though wiki Southhampton F.C. – History – Administration and relegation to Div 1, has an overview.

Southampton had been struggling with owners/finance for several years, now the Club was eventually structured with a parent company with the debt and the Football company limping along.

They cut back on costs, sold the likes of Theo Wallcott and Gareth Bale, played the youths but alas to no avail, the numbers caught up with them.

At the end of the season the parent company went into Administration, however the Football Club argued that they should not receive the 10 point penalty, that would see them relegated from the Championship to the First Division.

The Football League took the view that putting the debt with the parent Company was a contrivance and the Club and parent company were explicitly fianancially linked.

The Saints would have to take the 10 piont deduction.

Matt Le Tissier headed a rescue consortium to buy the stricken club and put down hard cash, but refused to take the 10point hit, as he headed a different company.

The Football League refused to grant them a licence and MLT did bitterly walking away.

Another consortium came in put in their money took the 10 piont deduction and so got the licence and Southampton were relegated to Div 1 but played on.

They got their act together and are now back in the EPL.

So the Football League decided the Club and Parent Company were inactual fact the same entity.

The also refused point blank to issue a licence without the Club taking their penalties.

    MMMmmmmmm

  20. I'm Neil Lennon (tamrabam) on

I never posted yesterday so here goes. “well done big sami, you put me in my place AGAIN”

The result was probably better than the overall display and hopefully secures our place in the CL sections. At the end of the day we could have scored 3 or 4. So what if Helsinborg put us under pressure now again, I saw at least a decade of celtic putting teams under pressure at CP and getting beat in Europe so I have no sympathy, they simply lacked quality in key positions.

By the way when is Armageddon starting this season, I wouldn’t like to miss it? Is it on a working day or a weekend?
