Commons phenomenal contribution

737

You will remember times, not so long ago, when a successful Celtic team went 15 months without keeping a clean sheet away from home in any competition, even against lower league opposition. Already this season we have achieved what until recently was regarded as beyond the club, won two games away from home without conceding.

Helsingborgs are not of the calibre of opponents Celtic can anticipate facing in the group stages of the Champions League (assuming no bizarre reversals), but they disposed of the Polish champions 6-1 on aggregate in the previous qualifying round and are as resourceful as Aalborg or Utrecht.

There was plenty to be pleased with in last night’s but the most striking element was the performance of Kris Commons. He scored goal and was credited with an assist, has scored both our league goals this season and had a further assist against Helsinki; an incredible return for a player who three weeks ago was drawing comment on the size of his shorts!

A share issue to give them their money back paid for by Rangers supporters all fits in to the silence. Ticketus, knowing Rangers supporters response to previous share issues will be worried that there will be no take up if same supporters think money will go towards paying their creditors rather than buying players.

Ok unless Celtic have an Artemedia type collapse looks like Celtic are in the CL group stages.

So 3rd or 4th what we looking for?

Watched Celtic carefully last night. Defense looks vulnerable. Today’s game could have been 4-4 easy.

So is the plan to sell off Ki, McCourt, Stokes, Murphy and the Twardzik twins to guarantee

a 3rd place position or is Christmas and CL money good enough for PL in the current vision?

Lennon cites Forster role as crucial to Celtic success

THE value of Fraser Forster’s impeccable display for Celtic in Sweden on Tuesday night will be measured in millions of pounds if his team complete their progress to the group stage of the Champions League next week.

But, as far as Neil Lennon is concerned, having a goalkeeper capable of the performance level delivered by Forster in the 2-0 Play-off round, first leg win against Helsingborgs is simply priceless.

A series of fine saves from the 24-year-old ensured Celtic weathered an attacking storm for long spells in the Olympia Stadium before leaving with a result which makes them the hottest of favourites to book a money-spinning place in next Thursday’s group stage draw in Monte Carlo.

It was Forster’s 53rd clean sheet in 96 appearances for Celtic, his current form vindicating Lennon’s dogged determination to sign him on a permanent deal from Newcastle during the summer after two seasons on loan.

    Such is Lennon’s faith in
Forster’s ability, he is happy to compare him with the most exalted of his profession and predicts that he will go on to prove himself as one of Britain’s top goalkeepers.

“I’ve always thought, from my own experience and from watching all the other teams play away from home in Europe, you do need your goalkeeper to play well,” reflected Lennon as Celtic returned from Sweden yesterday. “Whether it is Celtic, Manchester United, Juventus – any team. All good goalkeepers win matches for you. Allan McGregor did it for Rangers over the years, Andy Goram did it before that. Artur Boruc did it for us when I played for Celtic. Peter Schmeichel and Gigi
Buffon also did it. Good goalkeepers are worth their weight in gold at times.

“I thought Fraser was fantastic on Tuesday night and he made big saves at big moments. He was the catalyst for the result. He was perfect in everything he did. We might need another decent performance out of him in the home game. I’m sure Helsingborgs will try and fly out of the blocks.

“But Fraser was a main reason in our transfer policy, getting him in this year, because we felt he would be very important going into this campaign. The way he has been the last 18 months, at the top of his game, he’s only getting better. He’s still only 24 and he has all the attributes to be one of the best goalkeepers in the land. We’ve had him for over two years now and have bedded him down for another three at least. We feel he is a great signing for us.”

There has been much debate over whether Forster will be able to realise his ambition of playing for England while earning his living in Scottish football. Lennon admitted he feared that could work against Celtic when they were trying to convince the player to commit himself to the club during the summer.

“There was always that worry that he might not come to us on a permanent deal because of that,” added Lennon. “When John Ruddy pulled out of the England squad for the European Championship finals, Fraser didn’t even get a call.

“That was obviously a concern, because talks were ongoing at that time. But the fact we persuaded him to come says that he’s pretty happy at Celtic and feeling good about himself at the minute.

“I don’t think he did himself any harm on Tuesday night as far as England recognition is concerned. The game was shown to a nationwide ITV audience, so his performance was seen down south. It’s not for me to pick him for England. But all he can do is keep performing like that and, sooner or later, the door will swing open.”

Lennon maintained his cautionary approach to Celtic’s prospects of group stage qualification despite the handy lead they will take into next Wednesday’s second leg at Parkhead. He was dismissive of Helsingborgs coach Age Hareide’s assertion that the pressure is still firmly on Celtic.

“He was saying all the pressure was on us going into the game anyway,” shrugged Lennon. “That may be so, but I think our players have learned to handle the pressure a lot, lot better than in the past. In most of our domestic games, we are more or less heavy favourites to win, so they are used to it now.

“I’m not going to get into
a war of words with him
(Hareide). I’ll just leave it at that until next week. We will be at home next week, so the onus is maybe on us to take the game to them.

“That’s what we will try and do. We’ve got a good cushion going into the game. That’s obviously important and the clean sheet was priceless as well.

“Like I said immediately after the game on Tuesday, records are there to be changed and that’s the case with our away record. That’s four unbeaten away from home now – two draws and two wins – so we are starting to turn the corner a wee bit in that respect.”

  19. Good morning CQNers,

It’s been great to see the development of FF over the last couple of seasons and its the right time to acknowledge Fraser and those responsible for helping him achieve what he has so far.

Tuesday night saw Fraser step out of his shell and start to command the penalty area, something I’ve been waiting for.

However, looking back on Fraser’s progress its always struck me he isn’t a naturally confident sort of guy and in my experience these sorts of guys tend to become a touch over-confident when they meet success for the first time.

I hope Fraser and those around him help keep him grounded, for we all know how quickly a goalkeeper can make a mistake that proves costly to himself and his team.

  20. Morning,

SFA chief Stewart Regan has revealed that league reconstruction is still being

planned for next season — in a move which could see THE Rangers fast-tracked to the second tier of Scottish football a year ahead of schedule.

Regan will kick-start plans to revitalise the professional game on Thursday when a working group, featuring representatives from the SPL and SFL and headed by an independent

chairman, are tasked with devising a new structure.

The exact model is yet to be

determined but the starting point for discussions will be proposals for a 16- team Premier League, with two divisions below, which would give the Ibrox club a quicker route back to the top flight should they navigate their way

out of the Third Division as expected

Any reconstruction of the game that includes an easy ride for Sevco will be greeted with suspicion and derision by the supporters and by fast tracking Sevco into Div.3 the SFA have left themselves no way to reform the game for the good of the game without it being seen as a Orc conspiracy.

Regan is in a place where he has no respect from the fans of many clubs, his standing within the football community tho, the directions and bead counters may in fact be different it’s very hard to tell at this point, for instance what does PL think of him, I would love to know!

The Orcs and the protectors within the SFA have allowed this mess to spiral out of control and drag on for so long in the hope that now the football has started we will all just forget about their crimes and allow them to carry on, we won’t of course and until the SFA itself is reformed and the crooks brought to book there is no shining light at the end of the tunnel for our national game.

Ogilvie’s resignation is the only first step that I would consider any reconstruction of the game while he is still in power is flawed from the outset, Ogilvie must go and take his boot boys with him…

    Summa

  26. I have to say I am surprised that Ogilvie, in particular, and Regan are still in place. I am even more surprised that they are being given the opportunity to support thon deid team’s ghost XI to rise again. Can they not be brought to book? They are most definitely not fit for purpose. Surely a motion calling for their resignation can be made? I would have thought most supporters would want that.

  27. @iCeltic: In case you needed a reminder… Rangers FC, PLC currently are holders of the SPL share not SEVCO 5088.

@iCeltic: PART II – Rangers FC, PLC currently hold the SFA license not SEVCO 5088. Don’t believe the hype as Flavor Flav use to say. They are dead.

@rangerstaxcase: @rfc_dickson There is no “holding company” (look it up). No legal distinction between club and company. RFC- club & company- about to die.

Maybe now our supporters will STOP listening to the succulent lamb brigade, will they ever learn.

  28. As long as Regan, Ogilvie & Doncaster are still in situ then any proposed league reconstruction will be treated by football supporters across the country with suspicion. Suspicion that its not being carried out for the betterment of the Scottish game as a whole but for the betterment of one team in particular.

League reconstruction is desparately required but only if its done for the right reasons and gives us a set up that does away with teams playing each other 4 times and the possibility that a team can play an unequal split of home/away games.

  29. Kayal33

Regan has so badly handled the whole Sevco mess that he has left himself no way to go forward the best thing for the game would be a reconstruction of the SFA first and foremost but those Gravy Train Riders won’t be giving up their soft chairs anytime soon and certainly not without a fight.

As I see it today nothing has changed except having no other choice they fast tracked Sevco into a division where they had no right to be, we can’t let this lie to do so will me the Orcs back at the top table sooner rather than later.

It’s been so long since Hector was around I’m forgetting what hand he still has to play…

A true web of deceit has been and is still being spun everyday….
