Credibility and self-demeaning rules on boot colour

437

I learned that it’s important to choose the issues you have control over with your kids, and those you allow them to control. Let them take decisions that don’t really matter, as long as you decide the crucial stuff. Footwear was an early one for me. When the boys were younger, I realised how important it was for them to wear the shoes they wanted to wear, not the ones I thought right.

As long as they fitted correctly, it didn’t really matter which shoes they wore, so I let them have control over this issue. Instead of objecting to shoe choices, I supported them. They grew up learning how to make decisions on stuff like footwear, and kids are no different from the rest of us, they like making decisions on things that affect them. While I made them eat vegetables and rationed sweets.

If I turned to them now and said, “You’ll not get the wear out of them”, “They look ridiculous”, or “No, I don’t like the colour”, it would be so far removed from what they expect is their right to decide, they would think I was joking. But they still don’t bat an eye when I tell them what’s good for them and what’s not, because they know I only impose rules that matter.

We have other guidelines at work. We don’t wear jeans. Well not often. Because we’re all adults, sometimes people pitch up wearing them. I’ve never once asked why. Maybe it’s a laundry situation. Occasionally, I know they are going to do a stressful task in front of a PC for 8 hours, so assume they just want to wear what feels comfortable.

Sometimes I reckon it’s because people need a bit of scope to do their own thing, and as it doesn’t really matter, I worry about things which do matter.

There’s another feature of management I’ve seen in business. Every manager needs to make decisions. It’s part of what we expect of ourselves when we are appointed. No one has ever sat down with a manager to carry out a review and been told, “We’re doing just fine, nothing’s going to change”.

If the manager has scope to make significant improvements, the changes will be ambitious. From others, you will get plans for a new Tidy Desk Policy.

Newco manager, Pedro Caixinha, has informed his players they cannot wear green boots, as that is the colour of Celtic. Set aside the fact that this is a contrived attempt to create faux rivalry – it simply won’t. This is a serious contravention of the rules of leadership.

Setting rules about stuff which no one should care about, is self-demeaning. It costs the rule-maker credibility, and credibility is everything in leadership. Especially in a football dressing room.

This guy will be lucky to see the September Weekend.

Pollok and Tony look like they mean business.

Looking forward to the team that Kieran McAnespie puts together for the Bankies back in the top league. Ex Celt Ciaran Lafferty looks a goer for striker.

  2. Condolences to Cowiebhoy, keep positive mate and I wish you strength for the tough days ahead.

Delaney’s at 9.34 and Jimmynotpaul at 9.41 , both could apply. Lol .

Delaney’s , Gal from the Lions bus has a post on facebook , they are running a bus to the Sunderland pre season game.

The last time the Lions ran a bus to a friendly against Sunderland was that benefit game in Berwick and what an eventful trip it was.

Let’s hope that we a very good signing in place before the above pre season friendly.

Thanks for the heads up about Sunderland bus. Will phone Gal tomorrow for my son and I. Ryan is a LL bus virgin. Could be a memorable trip to Wearside. :)

  6. Cowiebhoy sad to hear of the death of your dad, John. May he rest in peace. I will remember him and all of your family at night prayer and at Mass tomorrow.

You have plenty of great Celtic moments with your dad to remember in the days ahead. I am sure he and Jinky will have a good time together. I bet the good Lord will be hearing few great Celtic memories tonight. God bless you all.

Delaney’s , Clydebank have a really good record at Newlandsfield over the last 8 years including a Junior cup semi final win in 2009 and winning the Central League Cup there , three times since 2010.

The last time Pollok played the Bankies in the league at Newlandsfield was about three or four years ago. The Bankes won four three and what a game it was.

Delaney’s , if you are on facebook, Gal’s facebook post mentioning the Sunderland game is the one about the Lions AGM , the Sunderland trip is in the AGM agenda.

Starting to look like this Musonda story is not going anywhere. Some guy has been in touch with his brother and screenshoted the conversation in which he says he’s staying at Chelsea to fight for his place. Will be a bit awkward for Etims if it doesn’t happen given they said it was almost over the line.

Saw Mavis on Tuesday. At Koerner Hall, the conservatory hall, so the sound was great.

It was fun. She seems like a really cool lady who has had an interesting life. She had a good rapport with the audience, and her voice still sounded pretty good. She did a nice mix of newer stuff and the hits. Her guitarist was terrific! Only downside was a pretty short set, and no encore (she tired visibly during the set).

But she is one of the last of that generation, so Definitely worth seeing if you get the chance.

I wouldn’t say no way, it does seem we have an interest but the reports suggesting it is immanent seem to be off the mark. Brendan has spoken of this player that we are ‘very close’ to signing so lets see what happens. It should happen soon or it will begin to look like another target missed.

Your story from your Dad re Jinky was brill.

My Dad was 74 today and as a gift I framed a copy of a letter he received from Jock Stein in 1978 when he became manager of Leeds United responding to a letter from my Dad wishing him well in his new job. The letter was typed and signed by Jock on Leeds United letterhead. My Dad had put the letter in a scrapbook with other articles from Jock’s last year with Celtic, and had given this to my cousin my years ago as a gift and had forgotten about it.

Anyway, last year my cousin gave it back to me and said it should be returned home, to which I made sure it happened last night, My Dad was delighted and recalled many stories on Celtic. It was a good day.

This is the man that made sure I followed Celtic. I owe him so much respect. I am sure you are well proud of your Dad and indeed sad, tonight.

    God Bless
