Dangerous teams with nothing to lose

482

We lost at Ibrox in January to a team that did not record a single attempt on target, not even at the own-goal we conceded.  We lost there again this month having missed a penalty and even better chances, while assisting the effort with another own-goal.  Frankly, Newco must be wondering how poorly they need to play against us to lose a game.  Nothing I saw from the home team in either of our recent defeats there justified fear of them.

If the old adage ’beware the straw man’ holds true, Celtic will deliver.  The straw man has nothing to lose or fear.  What have Celtic got to lose heading to Ibrox on Sunday?  This should be the most relaxed Celtic team to head there in Newco’s 9-year history.

The dubious motivation, to stop Newco’s unbeaten run in the league, feels a bit beneath us, but still…..

You are a gentleman. I was worried that the Red wine was clouding my mind and my wife wants me to watch a film, so I was logging off – you posted your team of cult heroes and the memories came flooding back. So here is my all-time cult Celtic heroes team.

A bit lightweight in mid-field, but going forward! Even so I would back my team to win tomorrow, and that is with their ages now!

Defo the wine is getting me. But did the Pope say something about the game in 67? Maybe that was JP II and Big Jack. Still they have friends in high places. Anyway, this is weird – I looked up the 67 Final there and in the middle of the story it mentions Big Billy’s nickname – ohhhh scary – maybe a good omen for tomorrow in light of the discussion earlier?

    Let’s win this game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AN TEARMANN-I have been in the estadio once with my stepson and two brother n laws.

Us older ones got on the park and tried to recreate the goals(without a baw).

My stepson ran up to where big Billy stood and did the iconic stance.

I think it’s changed now but we even got to walk up the tunnel and stairs to the pitch.

A fantastic couple of hours that we still talk about to this day

  7. Einstein’s famous insanity quote comes to mind as regards this Celtic side and this fixture.

Broony will cost us tomorrow because he’s slow and done, but we ‘owe’ him his last Derby. Just like we ‘owed’ Lennon the Cup Final.

We’ll be beat tomorrow and we’ll deserve it because we’ve allowed sentiment and personal loyalty to take precedent over what’s best for the team.

I wish Broony all the best. He leaves a genuine legend but I’m glad tomorrow is the last time I’ll see him being skinned.

Im confident of a Celtic victory tomorrow , after dropping points the last time we played them , I think we will put 3+ past FF ;) COYGIG

There was a story about the pope.

After Lisbon, he was reputed to have asked one of the bishops (possibly Scottish) “and what do you think of my team??”

The bishop was bemused and the holy father elaborated “I have it on good authority that they have named a football team in Glasgow after me-the pope’s eleven”.

  16. Who knows where the time goes…

Gotta thank madmitch for stirring the old memory banks earlier to day..

Ok, he got the month wrong

    He got the year wrong

    He got the tournament wrong

But, to be fair, he did get the opponents right, Clyde FC so credit where credit is due. No?

On this day in 1971 the Lisbon Lions played their last ever competitive appearance together

at home against the Bully Wee, and that was when Clyde really were from somewhere near the er Clyde

Ronnie Simpson played a ceremonial role and Bobby Lennox scored a hat trick in a 6-1 win

    I really was there.

Was at Hampden a week later too for the Scottish Cup final. Still five Lions starting that game,

Jim, Billy, Bobby L. Jimmy and Willie. Helped out by Evan Williams, Jim Brogan, George Connelly, Davie Hay, Tommy Callaghan and Harry Hood. And Lou Macari in the 2-1 victory in the replay four days after that.

Or in other words, still a top class team. And a privilege to watch that great evening.

Amazing to think you could afford that on a paper round (Citizens and Times) in those days.

Thanks for that. I did point out that despite his assertion that RIFC didn’t have debt to any institution it was almost certain that they owed a bundle to the largest institution in their country, their beloved crown.

You would expect to see an accrued debt for VAT and paye in the year end accounts and seeing as they would owe VAT for 6 months if they pay quarterly or 4 months if monthly because of the covid deferral scheme it would have been bigger than normal. But without comparing 2020 and 2019 it’s difficult to say how much they were knocking the tax man for at that point. Not unreasonable to think they were using whatever leeway they could to help with the cash flow and keep the lights on.

That was last financial year, since when they have spent more money on players, increasing what’s owed to other clubs, increased the cash installment payments needed to not fall foul of the regulations (!) and increased the wage bill.

It’s possible that they have been making their VAT and PAYE payments on time and that they’ve paid up all the deferred amounts. It’s also possible that their debts to HMRC are huge and even with cl money they won’t be able to trade their way out of their problems.

Uefa don’t seem to be in the mood to punish smaller clubs because of problems caused by covid. They need all the friends they can get at the moment so they’ll probably be lenient on clubs like them.

    Re: vaccine

Everyone should take it if offered, assuming no specific contraindications.

Anyone not taking it – I personaly think you are silly, and I also think you are hindering population-level cover.

However – the important point is that it is a free country.

If you don’t take it (might be scared / sceptical / a daftie 😉, for instance) there should be absolutely, under no circumstances whatsoever, any witholding of NHS Services.

because as with anything in life, they arent without risk
