Dave King’s self-flagellation

1136

Self-flagellation:

SPFL: “Rather than attempt to communicate through the media, it is far more appropriate that any substantive issues are presented to the SPFL board for careful and detailed consideration, based on a sound legal analysis of the facts.”

Translated: Whip.

SPFL: “To date, there has been no such representations to the SPFL board and it notes Mr King’s statement of 30 May.

Translated: Whip.

SPFL: “In its statement of 29 May, Rangers FC claimed “a business relationship”, existed between the SPFL chairman and minority shareholders in a SPFL club, despite no evidence of such a relationship being presented. There is no mention of the previously claimed “business relationship” in the 30 May statement.

Translated: Whip.

SPFL: “In the 30 May statement the central allegation has now become that “there was non-disclosure of the conflict that immediately arose when the SPFL chairman accepted” his appointment as a non-executive director of International News & Media PLC (“IN&M plc”). As with the 29 May statement, no detail was provided to support this allegation.

SPFL: “Within the space of about 24 hours two different and very public allegations have been made against the SPFL chairman without, in either case, an approach first being made to the SPFL with concerns or seeking clarification.”

Translated: Whip.

To you or me this would be embarrassing.  The SPFL know the rules.  In fact, they wrote the rules, so if you are going to go off like a paranoid loon, know your territory, get it right, be consistent, remember what you wrote yesterday before launching into another issue today.

The days when the likes of Jim Farry (or the many who followed him) ran Scottish football are over.  There are professionals in place now.  Murdoch MacLennan has been a senior executive of large companies for decades.  He was a member of the Commission on Scottish Devolution, is an Honorary Professor at the Glasgow University Business School.

Unlike Dave King, he has no criminal convictions.

I would also like to point out some of the reporting on this:

“Record Sport broke the story Doncaster would be standing by MacLennan, despite news emerging of the 69-year-old’s links with Desmond and fellow shareholder Denis O’Brien.”

Ask yourself this: on what basis could the SPFL act against Murdoch MacLennan?  It would be more accurate to say “Neil Doncaster and others on the SPFL board have no choice but to stand by MacLennan as no evidence of wrong-doing whatsoever has been presented.”

And, no evidence of links with Dermot Desmond or Denis O’Brien have been provided.  There are no such links, only innuendo.   King may as well have said, “They go to the same synagogue” [they don’t, of course].

Stay classy, Dave.  I’m sure outbursts like this are a sign that your troubles are all under control, but stop this self-flagellation nonsense.

I met Graham Spiers and was very disappointed, he always struck me as a brave and educated guy but he has fallen far far from where I had him, I have no doubt he has been intimidated by his own but still he has given up all his integrity and passion for his trade to become a yes man for morons. Your better than that Graham.

    ===============================

    https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/dave-king-is-right-to-raise-concerns-about-spfl-post-jts8v9xsl

Like many other people in Scottish football I shudder slightly when Dave King has the temerity to urge “transparency” from anyone. From bodies such as SARS, the revenues service in South Africa, to our own Takeover Panel, there have been quite a few people down the years who would testify to “transparency” rarely having been one of Mr King’s sworn life rules. The Rangers chairman has proved a ducker and diver on various fronts.

So, when King suddenly makes the clarion call for “transparency” this week from the Scottish Professional Football League, Rangers fans will just have to put up with people sniggering at the mere suggestion. From King, of all people, that takes quite a nerve.

Nonetheless, in the case of Murdoch MacLennan’s position as chairman of the SPFL, and King’s objections to it, I think King and Rangers have a point. Given his various business positions, I don’t think MacLennan’s role in Scottish football looks good at all. Indeed, it looks potentially compromised. It looks decidedly weighted in favour of Celtic — I am talking here of perception — and until this suspicion can be clarified, King, I believe, will have a right to harp on about it.

There is a potential conflict of interest regarding MacLennan’s role as chairman of the SPFLSNSThe nub of this is now well-known. MacLennan, at the same time as being the current SPFL chairman, is also chairman of Independent News and Media PLC, the vast Irish publishing group. Dermot Desmond, a substantial shareholder in Celtic, is the second-biggest stakeholder in INM, and Denis O’Brien, also a Celtic shareholder, is INM’s largest stakeholder.

The question here, given these overlapping business roles of MacLennan, Desmond and O’Brien, is whether this raises a conflict of interest for MacLennan. Does his INM role bring him into contact with either Desmond or O’Brien? Do these men have business or social relationships? Is there a natural empathy between MacLennan and Desmond, via INM, which a club like Rangers might feel is unhealthy in terms of a strictly impartial running of Scottish football?

I have to say if I were in King’s shoes I’d feel a bit suspicious. I’d find it inconceivable that MacLennan, given his INM connections with Desmond, was either strictly impartial or not somehow swayed. Nor has it helped that MacLennan, in some public prints, has been shown traditionally to have far more affection for Celtic than Rangers.

These days many Rangers fans are on the war path, searching for conspiracies against their club. So for a guy like King, looking to show some fervour for his cause, this MacLennan episode only adds fuel to his fire.

People who have lampooned King for his various statements this week have been quick to point out that decidedly Rangers-minded people have recently held senior and allegedly impartial posts in Scottish football. Gordon Smith, a former Rangers player and head of football, and a Rangers fan, has been the Scottish FA’s chief executive. Campbell Ogilvie, for 27 years a Rangers secretary or director, and an EBT recipient, was the SFA president. Were these two figures held to be “impartial” when it came to dealing with the issues of the day facing Scottish football? Who knows, but many were unhappy at such appointments.

This MacLennan issue is a burden the SPFL could do without. You cannot have a public suspicion like this hanging over such an important post. In his objections, King’s seeming double standards might look laughable, but that doesn’t take away from the point he is raising.

If it is shown, through their INM connections, that Desmond and MacLennan have a relationship, then there is a potential conflict of interest case which needs to be nailed.

MacLennan, the great man of silence at the SPFL, needs to come out, defend himself, and show that there is no merit in Rangers’ suspicions.
