Dedryck strolls past England

1089

Hot on the heels of a former Celtic player becoming the most expensive defender in transfer history, we watched Dedryck Boyata stroll through Belgium’s win against England last night.  I would be more animated on this subject if he was secured on a five year contract, but as he his current deal only has one year to go, such a high profile performance could reduce our options for the player.

How many of you thought we would be in this situation after the Ibrox game in March?  That day Brendan Rodgers said there was better to come from Dedryck.  He is still not the finished article, but he’s a key cog in a team who fancy their chances in Russia.

Stiliyan Petrov match worn Champions League shirt raffle

We have a very special raffle, which ends this afternoon! The shirt Stiliyan Petrov wore in Celtic’s 0-0 draw with Bayern Munich during our 2003 Champions League campaign is available. You can buy a ticket for £1 here on ebay.  Stan signed the shirt.

All proceeds go to the Stiliyan Petrov Foundation to aid research into leukaemia and cancer treatments.  Stiliyan’s recover from leukaemia shows us just how far treatments have come, but as our own CQN community knows too well, more progress is needed.  The draw will be made at Woodside Hotel, Aberdour, where the 14th annual CQN Open Golf Day is now underway.

Hope to see you later.

  1. This World cup has seen a lot of quick back to front breaks.

Is there a realization that tippy tappy football without purpose is pointless?

Are coaches realizing that a lot of these teams are not set up to defend against fast and direct forward passing?

When France went 2-1 down yesterday it looked like the team freed themselves from their dull coaches shackles and used their actual talents.

Pogba is a force whose potency is reduced by having two safety first coaches at club and international level.

When his team went down yesterday he showed character by being the player he is capable of and drove his team forward relentlessly.

    Hello from sunny Tooting.

Glad to hear that the Bon Accord dayoot was a success. Brought back memories of my own visits there, nearly 40 years ago. This was during the first Real Ale revival. I didn’t particularly like Real Ale, but masel and ma best mate from Uni used to go the BA on Sundays as a wind down from the heavy weekends we did then. My mate was from Parkheid (Springfield Road, then Whitby Street), I had a studentflat in town. He would come my flat, then we both headed up to Charring Cross. Maximum on a Sunday night was 4 pints. Being in our early twenties, we were by far the youngest people in the bar. The clientele then was generally lone males, most had long beards, somesmoked a pipe, some had Aran Knit jumpers, a few read books. We used to be amused by, and enjoyed, the laid back Atmosphere. It kinda felt like we adopted different persona in there.

It was a big difference from the previous 48 hours, where we would be in a larger group, and which would typically feature an all day session in the Press Bar, before either heading out in town, or having a few in the pubs around Parkheid, mainly the Straw Hoose and Black Bull. Then we would be up drinking and spliffing in my mates hoose until about four in the morning. Saturday, if it was home game, would be return to same pubs, typically six Guinness’s (Guinni?), go to the game with a carry out. Meet up wi more mates in “our” spot in the Jungle (aye Kev, part of the rebellious Jungle then were students, and some of them probably wore Scooby Doo pyjamas. Bit after my time, I had Dep’ty Dawg wans) Watching games in those times, was usually executed with one eye shut, to get rid of the extra 22 players, and extra mib that seemed to be crowding out the pitch. Then it was into town, or up west for more beers, until collapsing time, or getting lucky, whichever came first. Our Bon Accord Sunday evening sessions, contrasted sharply, with the Hedonistic carnage that went before it. Happy Days… or maybe Happy Daze would be more appropriate.

    Jobo.

Saddened to hear that you are quitting the Blog, we have never met, but I can tell we would get on well, from the quality and content of your posts on here. I hope a wee break will reenergise your feelings about the blog, and I for one, would celebrate your return one day.

In light of the above, concerning Jobo, and other previous poster’s on here, I think some folk should put in a bit of effort on trying to get over themselves a bit. I remember our gracious host, Paul Brennan, announcing that he had asked people to be Moderators and had instructed them on their parameters. He specifically told us, that he had instructed the Moderators not to engage with the offending post’s authors, and that any issues people had over a deletion should be taken up with Paul directly. As far as I can see, if it’s his house, he makes the rules and therefore, if he, or his representatives on here, decide to delete a post, well that is their right, and they don’t have to explain their reasons to anyone. Is it in error? Was another offending email treated differently? Maybe, so what? Accept it, move on. If it offends so much, anybody’s rather childish (imo) “Whataboutary” stance, well maybe this blog is not for you, and maybe you can work out your next logical move. Dinnae start jumping to unfounded conclusions about other poster’s, and dinnae start dissin the Moderator’s, or Paul.

Well, that’s me, rant over. Now as Dena would say…. play nice everybody.

Thats all good when both sides are going toe-to-toe, how do you counter a packed defence though?

Most weeks Celtic are up against the park the bus merchants.

One cannot blame the opposition though, because they know fine well that if they have a go at Celtic they will inevitably be destroyed.

Same as what happens to us against the rich European clubs when we try to outplay them.

    Damage limitation.

  8. Hunderbirds,

When I was a wee bhoy, I used to wait outside the Straw Hoose for my Dad, who drank there before the match. His brother, my Uncle Eddie, used to work there on a Saturday.

Years later, and for years, my Dad drank in the Black Bull with his pal, Allan (God rest him) before the game.

Your post brought back a wee warming memory or two, although I haven’t been in either in at least 10 years.

Headline on Ibrox Noise (the thinking orcs forum) …Champions League Manager confirms Rangers friendly

Now who could this glamour tie against a Champions League team involve.

Well it’s The New Saints. Welsh Champions …

  12. 16 ROADS

It would not be a packed defense if teams moved the ball faster .

Also this one dimensional side to side football allows a packed defense to hold position as there is a predictability and little forward motion.

For example we have two very quick widemen in Forrest and Sinclair but never use their pace as to often our possession obsession means they face teammates and usually just pass sideways an backwards when the occasional diagonal over the top would stretch teams defensively.

Also our being destroyed in Europe is a result of an incomplete coaching strategy where we do not understand how to positionally set when we lose possession.

In Europe we get caught in no mans land as our players are not confident or coached enough at that level to know when to press and when to hold.

I think your assessment is spot on except Ralston would be better kept as he will play often.

I do not think Miller looks comfortable in a defensive role so he will probably go.

Spain have not really created anything despite having 70 percent possession.

Costa due to his teams ponderous build up got no service.

Their football style is pretty in ineffective areas.

I suppose that you are right.

It’s just that this Russia Spain game is a bit like many of the Celtic games last season.

We had all the possession and completed lots of passes yet couldn’t break teams down like we did the previous season.

I get what you are saying though.
