Dilemma of youth development

1406

I know squad numbers are limited but I’m disappointed Eoghan O’Connell has not been retained. In his performances early last season he displayed the attributes of a modern-day footballing central defender. He has a future in the game and will do well wherever he goes next.

The perennial dilemma of youth development is that while teams want to improve performances NOW, they also need to leave space for worthy development squad candidates to grow into. Kieran Tierney got there, but the truth is, Celtic had been trying to sign a left back for year but were unable find anyone of the necessary standard. If we did, Kieran, Eoghan, would never have had the chance.

Such an arrangement would facilitate free movement of EU citizens into Britain.

‘Let’s see how the CQN unionists enjoy having the DUP make their laws.’

    ###

Lets not forget that during the Troubles the only mainstream politicians on the mainland who were prepared to speak out in defence and support of Irish Republicanism were ‘unionist’ politicians like Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell.

The nationalists, not so much. Generally the only time they mentioned the issue was when they spoke in support of Scottish soldiers involved in one atrocity or another.

Some people have very short memories.

    Of course they do.

The point is the hard Brexiteers in the Tory party don’t, not if it involves free movement of people (which, so far as I understand it, it must).

So the involvement of the DUP is going to cause as many problems as it solves for the Tories.

  22. Absolutely no interest in the Scottish team , apart from wanting the celts in the team to do well . never used to miss a game at hampden . But like many others got sickened with the anti celtic agenda , at those games, Two Unbelievable free kicks from the griff , but in all honesty ,I thought Craig could have done better with their two goals . But I suppose a point is better than nothing

  23. Even if Sinn Fein take up their seats, the Tory/DUP alliance still have a majority. I can’t see SF changing their position unless they see that it will make a real difference, or unless the new coalition undermines the nationalist community so much that SF feels it needs to take a stand.

There is a potential problem if they do take up seats, in that every vote which included SF would be portrayed as Corbyn and terrorists supporting one another (I know, I know…). JC is already considered vulnerable on terrorism by the MSM, so they will look for every opportunity to make that connection. It is interesting to see that the last 24 hours has shown that a lot of people in the UK were not really aware of what the DUP stood for, so they are probably not as tainted by the troubles as SF in the minds of most UK voters. Most UK voters probably just see them as religious lunatics (which is fair, but not the whole story…). I’d tend to say that SF should maintain their present position unless things get really bad in NI. Which is possible, the ‘marching season’ is almost upon us.

There’s no doubt that the DUP want a soft Brexit, but more than that they want to shore up the position of the Orange and Protestant community in NI. It’s a bit like the Tories say they want negotiated access to the single market, but immigration will trump that . So this is a real chance for the DUP. I feel that the DUP will accept what the Tories want on Brexit as long as they are allowed to march and to maintain some hard-line positions on e.g. gay rights, abortion, etc. Wouldn’t surprise me if May offers them an easy score by withdrawing from the European Court of Human Rights. What all this does to the Good Friday Agreement, God only knows: but the Tories don’t care. As Edward Carson said in 1921 “What a fool I was! I was only a puppet, and so was Ulster, and so was Ireland, in the political game that was to get the Conservative Party into Power.”

  24. Me being twisted me would like to give Mrs May the benefit of the doubt.

Could it possibly be that enlisting the support of the DUP, she was merely demonstrating the time honoured English ignorance of Ireland and Irish affairs?

Made my views on SF and other Irish Abstentions very clear on Thursday.

Given the Independent Lady Harmon is liable to support Tories SF votes could not arithmetically defeat May.

However, they could make it difficult for her to govern where sickness and death could preempt by elections.

Indeed the outcome would eventually a vote of no confidence that would bring the government down.

If SF and its supporters want nothing to do with Britain, then that is their understandable choice.

However, in the interests of consistency they should desist from availing themselves of anything that costs the British taxpayer money or resources.

  30. Just a wee point. Was looking at the first team squad on the Official site. The names & pics of Efe & Eoghan O’Connell have been removed but Paddy Roberts is still included, now Kris is still there as well but if his contract isn’t up yet then he is entitled to be there but I thought Paddy was officially gone back to Man City.
