Discipline, provocation and a place in the semis

473

There will be no one better prepared to take a team to Easter Road tomorrow than Neil Lennon, but while Hibernian fans are likely to feel generously to their former manager, by all accounts there is little love lost between him and the Hibs players.  They will give everything for a place in the Scottish Cup semi-final.

Neil has only had a few days with the players and I doubt he will have changed anything.  John Kennedy is his assistant specifically to ensure continuity at this time.

If our reception at Tynecastle is any kind of weathervane on how we will be received tomorrow (I suspect it is), the most important quality we will need is discipline.  Our treble treble could go on the line through rashness, provoked or otherwise.    Remain composed, pass the ball and get forward with the pace we possess, and a place in the semi-final is ours.

It won’t matter who’s in charge of Celtic, manager or CE, If we’re going for 10 the seats will be sold. After that, who knows…

  2. Brendan and Chris Davies arrived at Lennoxton at 7am every morning and were the last ones to leave. Whatever folk say about them leaving at this time, their commitment to the Club and professionalism when in post cannot be questioned. Their methods maybe at times but their commitment, no way.

  4. SFTBs @ 9:06 PM,

You know we have had this debate for some time, where is Celtic in Europe?

My point is/was we should be as good as or better than our peers.

I’m now willing to açcept defeat on this. You are quite right. There is no way, we will be competing with those guys.

We simply do not have the ingenuity, drive and ambition those clubs have.

When we get down to the bear bones, and with Brendan and his team gone, we don’t have any expertise in football at this level at our Club. All our expertise is in various aspects of business

Now Lenny has just come back – but just for one moment take him out of the equation, totally out. Who do we have at Celtic who knows anything about running a football club?

And it shows, it is completely amateur hour…

    Don’t believe me!?

Fine – we’ll come back on here on the first of June and you can say…

  5. ‘Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic revelation as he hopes to return as manager one day’

Brendan Rodgers insists he hopes to return to Celtic one day to manage the team for a second time.

Rodgers made the astonishing claim this afternoon just more than an hour after being officially paraded as the new boss at Leicester City.

The Northern Irishman has been at the heart of a furious backlash since quitting his position at Parkhead on Monday night to thrash out a move to the English club.

Rodgers has been branded a ‘fraud’ and a ‘snake’ by some of the club’s supporters while cops are investigating a vile online video of a group of fans chanting for him to be shot dead by the IRA.

The storm of bad blood means it is unlikely that Rodgers would be welcomed back to Celtic Park as a spectator.

“I loved every single second of being there. When it calms down in maybe 10 years I could maybe go back to Celtic.”

When asked if he meant returning to the club as manager Rodgers answered emphatically: “Yes. Absolutely. 100 per cent.”

Are we to presume then that something so severe has come up which meant he couldn’t see out a further 12 weeks, potentially leaving his status as our greatest ever manager second only to Stein?

There’s 2 scenarios for me; either the ‘something so severe’ I referred to is the huge pay packet from Leicester and he’s abandoned ship to bolster his bank balance, or he’s been afraid of failure in the last few weeks of the season and letting the league slip away from us and undoing all his good work over the past 2 and a half seasons.

*Chris the latter scenario is one that I mentioned in response to RobinBhoy in quite a lengthy phosting:

“One thing to note is that after we completed his first treble he admitted he thought he was having a heart attack due tae the pressure on the run in, so mibbees the job’s too big for him and mibbees the King Power Stadium is a safe haven and mibbees again that’s why he isnae waiting for the job at Stamford Bridge.”

If money isnae that much of a factor as he was well paid at Liverpool plus a hefty payoff when he left and then allegedly the highest paid manager in our history, probably could afford 2 heated driveways, then why jack it all in. As my wee cockney mate would have said “did his ar8e fall out”.

  10. Still gutted with Brendan… no bad mouthing just gutted… I always said he would be here for years as he was “happy” and he had previously stated being happy is more important than any job …. just heard him speaking at his new klubs press conference … I still love his voice and his words but both seem so much emptier than before … think am more gutted for the very old Celtic fans & the very young Celtic fans as every Celtic fan I know “bought” into Brendan … is middle aged nutters can find something else to moan about :-) ….. BUT in the last two seasons Brendan has been untouchable in Scotland … Neil Francis has been doing it since he left the “premiership” for less money from Leicester … irony is never lost …

Hibs v Celtic tomorrow … heroes come heroes go, the one constant ….

    CELTIC never leave us ??

Sad thing is, see all this signing about him and banners etc, it feeds his ego even more…

  12. If you knew BR at his previous clubs then you couldn’t be surprised about his actions.

He’s not a liked guy. He got Liverpool almost to a title and their fans don’t like him.

Some Celtic fans are a bit too insular, they brag about not watching anything but Celtic, then are surprised when BR acts like BR

I’m not counting any chickens .

i don’t think these fancy names from Europe being bandied about to take us to the 9 , 10 would cope with the pressure , NFL knows what it takes to win the league .

  17. Chairbhoy

We simply do not have the ingenuity, drive and ambition those clubs have.

Which ones- the real comparators or delusional ones like Ajax and Benfica?

When we get down to the bear bones, and with Brendan and his team gone, we don’t have any expertise in football at this level at our Club. All our expertise is in various aspects of business

What “experience” in Europe is NFL lacking? Brendan only had his Liverpool years in Europe. Almost all of our managers in our history had no experience of Europe before coming to Celtic. And Peter Lawwell’s recent experience is of the football business not just business in general- that must count for something. Doesn’t mean he is good but it does mean he is experienced.

Now Lenny has just come back – but just for one moment take him out of the equation, totally out. Who do we have at Celtic who knows anything about running a football club?

Lenny had no experience when he started with us. Most of our managers had Celtic as their 2nd (or first job). Jock had 5 years previous, Big Billy had a year previous, Davie Hay had a year, Tommy Burns had 2, Barnes and Brady had their first job with us. Of that lot, only Jock had prior Euro experience. Last century, only Macari, Jansen and Venglos had significant prior managerial experience and none of them proved particularly successful in Europe.

This century, Lennon apart, we have enjoyed a bit more experience – MON had 10 years top flight management, WGS had 8 and Tony Mowbray had 5 but none had any lengthy Euro grounding. Brendan Rodgers is the anomaly and he only had 2 seasons of Euro experience and only one CL Group stage (when Pool lost out to Basel and dropped into Europa League).

Did Brendan’s team, Brendan apart, know more about running a club? Davies is an asst. to BR- so was John Kennedy. Scott Brown knows a lot about running a team from the dressing room. He’s still here. This time around, most of us are not worried about Neil’s experience- it is his temperament that we worry about.

And it shows, it is completely amateur hour…

How so? We have one game as evidence and we won it. I could claim it shows 100% professionalism but it would be equally unreliable on a sample of 1.

    Don’t believe me!?

    About what?

Fine – we’ll come back on here on the first of June and you can say …I told you so

What will June have proven? If we lost a league, fair enough- we have an omnishambles but I have heard threats that we are gonna lose a league every year of our 7iar (though it faded out earlier in the invincible season). I don’t believe we will lose out this year in the league- do you?

But if we secure this league- by 1 point or 20- what will have been proven for anyone to say “I told you so”?

We won’t have seen how the summer recriuitment has gone in June

We won’t have seen how the Euro qualifiers have gone

And we won’t have seen how the quest for 9iar has started.

Mind if I wait a bit longer before I tell you this?

It’s been a very strange week, like many never saw that coming in a million years…. as for Neil Francis loves him as a player, loved the fact he done everything to get his move from Leicester to us, loved him as a manager …. maybe not the media/fans darling BR once was, but for me, he is the manager we need just now… as much as the joy BR brought us, in the matter of 48hrs he has brought more disruption since 1994….

  19. Larkin1907 on 1st March 2019 11:47 pm

We’ve got a semi to win and ten games to go in the league.

    Not a semi yet :O)

  22. The Huddle

He is rated so high because pace is everything in the EPL

The ball is played early through quick passing if you are top6 or over the top if bottom 6. The rest get confused

I think he could be a star if he calms down. His touch in early games was brilliant, his pace was a factor later. Put it together and he is devestating
