Do our job and hope Killie struggle at Aberdeen

483

Celtic’s run of games at home against low ranking teams continue tomorrow against Hamilton Academical.  These matches are always straightforward on paper but it takes lots of energy to subvert any team of professionals.  If we get a comparable performance in the opening period to what was on display against Airdrie and St Mirren, Accies will be in for a difficult afternoon.

Assuming Celtic do their job right, we can hope that Aberdeen take something from Kilmarnock at Pittidrie.  Killie are currently only a point off the pace, although Celtic have a game in hand, against St Johnstone next midweek.

With his new strikers playing so well, Brendan Rodgers will be in no hurry to rush Odsonne Edouard back.  I am also keen to see more of Ewan Henderson.

I once heard “We gave the world Hugh McIlvanney.” He was good enough to be a national boast.  He lilov Big Jock too. Sigh.

never been south? I’m amazed… I thought for sure you would have done a pilgrimage to Nine Mile, Jamaica (birth place of Robert Nesta) …. I didn’t make it there when I was in Jamaica… next time.

If you head east from Jamaica, you will hit the Dominican, and if you go a little bit further east, you will hit a few smaller islands, one of which is Antigua…

TR and KT wid run through brick walls for Celtic, as would young Mikey Johnston. It would be great to see them all as regulars along with wee K Dembele and maybe one or two others from the academy one day, hopefully in the not too distant future. HH.

Hugh Mc.Ilvanney, the last of the greats.

He wrote a wonderful article, (weren’t they all) after Bobby Murdoch won the 1969-70 Player of the Year Award.

After extolling the footballing virtues of Bobby, he went on to write that he deserved the award for one act alone in the 1969.

That was when running alongside Ferguson, the latter attempted a head butt. Murdoch never broke stride and merely rode the blow.

  13. I wonder if Catriona Renton at BBC Scotland will broadcast the court decision in Amsterdam as she spent a lot of time bringing information on the “riot” by Celtic fans to the people of Scotland via Reporting Scotland?

Well done to those concerned and their legal teams, hopefully perjury charges will be brought and any trail back to Police Scotland followed up fully.

  18. In terms of the all seeing eye optics of the PLC board, which scenario ensured that, action, radical action, would be taken by the PLC board…..

    1. The 30,000 #empty# seats, accompanied by a message on a Green Brigade banner…..

    ….the banner….

    “DESMOND AND LAWWELL’S LEGACY

    EMPTY HEART’S

    EMPTY JERSEY’S

    EMPTY SEAT’S”

….after the magic hat defeated Ronny D, and forced the PLC to up their game in terms of managerial recruitment, ie: Brendan Rodgers.

    Or,…

    2. The 60,000 #filled# seats, on the entrance into the top league of the unpunished, Sevco / Rangers, with an old firm same club £49 pricing structure, which ensured that, Sevco / Rangers will never pay back any, of the £140 + million, that was swindled from the hmrc, specifically swindled, the cheat Celtic managers, players, and supporters out of 20 odd trophies, which, imho, these trophies will remain unstripped for so long as Celtic is custodially governed by a Tory PLC board.

So, which of the two scenarios above, ensured radical action by the PLC board, and what does it tell us ?

  21. Wild Bulls in Pamplona

The small compact Osasuna cannot compete in size and splendour with Ibrox, never mind Celtic Park, but there was enough to suggest that the club and the local police had everything well under control.

What they had not counted on, was the inebriated and violent mob which somehow had transformed itself from the amiable, passive congregation to be found in the narrow streets and small squares of the town earlier in the day.

They announced their arrival with a tirade of filthy invective which would have filled even the most hardened bull runner with dread. It was clear that some, if not the majority, had come to look for trouble. In the Glasgow parlance, they would certainly not be avoiding a ‘squer go’ if it came their way.

The fact that they had access to cheap alcohol and were in a predominantly Catholic country, did not help their mood. The notion that the local populace had in some ways set out to ‘antagonize’ their visitors is risible. That is what opposition supporters are for! If one or two Osasuna supporters chose to wear a Celtic jersey or wave an Irish flag, that is their prerogative.

The fact is that the problem lies with Rangers, who for some deep psychological reason, inherent in many of their followers are unable to see the taunting for what it was. Frankly, their subsequent behaviour can in no way be justified by a few young daft laddies waving a Celtic scarf.

The explanation is much simpler, Rangers supporters were looking for the excuse to riot and cause chaos.

It is ironic that certain high placed figures within Rangers are trying to insist that ‘infiltrators’ were responsible for the alleged excesses of Osasuna. I suggest they look more carefully in their own backyard before they start making unfounded and ridiculous allegations.

Rangers themselves have been infiltrated by far right wing political groups, who see the club as a natural magnet for their warped beliefs and ideology.

The club has a long and disturbing history in Europe, violence seems to follow them whoever leads the club or whoever plays in their colours.

Violence and intimidation are the two constants when Rangers ‘do’ Europe.

The Spanish riot police may not be the most politically correct body in the Iberian Peninsula, but no normal person could seriously question their tactics last night. Their job was to restore law and order and quell any possibility of murder and mayhem in the narrow, squashed confines of a small football stadium. They carried out their duties with consummate efficiency and aplomb and in the process prevented a potentially lethal situation arising.

As for the hard men among the Rangers supporters, I suggest that if they ever return to Pamplona, they avail themselves of the opportunity of joining in the bull running. This is something which the Spanish male sees as the ultimate challenge to his bravery. I somehow think that for most of the Rangers supporters we saw last night, it is something they would wish to avoid. Maybe they would feel safer running with the bulls and having safety in numbers. Sadly the herd mentality still triumphs at Ibrox.

.. we used to play football in the local park .. the jamaican/rasta boys all used to hang about there ….some were really good footballers (a few ex Jamaican internationals, and one then current Canadian international) … and most were stoned out of their minds … the second hand smoke around the park was enough to get me pretty tipsy!

When I was in Jamaica, there were always a few guys just up the road from where we were staying who were selling …. some were hardcore rastas, some were just selling ….

of course, the resort and other people always warn you away from them, but, as I like to walk around off the resort, I got to see them every day…say hello, start chatting …. some about rastafarianism, sometimes about football …

got to the point, every time we’d walk by, they’d say hello, we’d do the fist bump, and they’d alll say ‘respect, mon’… made me smile.

He said: “I have very vivid memories and they come to me in bright fragments.”

“You knew Celtic were breaking Inter’s spirit because although they went ahead early with the penalty, quite soon, the Italians displayed signs they were under pressure. As we all know though, as football goes on, and especially if you are facing a team with Inter’s smartness in defending leads, you wonder – will justice be done here?”

“Sitting in the press box there was a feeling in my mind that this could be a terrible injustice, that Celtic wouldn’t get their deserts at the end of the match but of course they did and, in my mind, so did football.”

“The whole hour and a half of the match remains with me as one of the most enthralling and thrilling experiences of working as a reporter in sport.”
