Drama Queens, LostBhoys and where we came from

537

There will be no mention of ‘Drama Queens’ from me, but those who were uncontrollably distressed by ‘defeats’ in meaningless friendlies will no doubt be delighted to lean a Celtic team largely staffed by undergraduates got the better of Brentford yesterday.  The rest of us remain unmoved, although I was pleased Amido Balde received some encouragement.

As many of you will know, the LostBhoys have been broadcasting podcasts covering Celtic’s history in recent months.  It has been an incredibly professional, informative and entertaining look at our club through the years.   This weekend they broadcast a decade I helped them cover, 1950-1960.

It encapsulated a seminal period for Celtic.  When the SFA ruled the club would face suspension if they continued to fly the Irish flag, we could have gone out of business, or forever been robbed of our heritage.  The decade saw many of the great names in our history at Celtic Park: McGrory, Tully, Stein, Fallon, McNeill, Chalmers, Auld, Gribben and Hogan, as well as the ever-influential, Sir Robert Kelly, but to those at the time it looked like we were heading nowhere.  Celtic lost more games in the 50s than in any other decade, but as we know, it’s darkest before the dawn….

There are great contributions from Charlie Gallacher and John Fallon, and Terry Dick, son of Glen Daly, who recorded The Celtic Son, told us how the song came into being (it was basically the work of Charlie Tully).

You can download this episode here but catch them all, you’ll be glad you did.

Two days until football returns to Celtic Park; can’t wait.

    Auldheid,

Just caught up on your posts from last night re the LNS decision. Very interesting stuff, and clearly well researched.

My take on it would be that Doncaster was hell-bent on newco “Rangers” being in the SPL. The contrived new Sky deal with the four “old firm” games highlights this.

However he knew that there would be a huge backlash from fans of other clubs, so had to be seen to be doing something to “punish” “Rangers”. Charlie spilled the beans regarding the deal they put to him re title stripping.

Now remember how the SFA licence took until the last minute to go through? And Charlie kept saying he simply wouldn’t accept title strippping? How was this resolved?

I’m totally guessing here, but I’d say Doncaster (who remember didn’t get his way in getting “Rangers” into division one) told Charlie (without actually telling him if you know what I mean) that there wouldn’t be title striping, but that the enquiry would have to go ahead. Something along the lines of “Charles – there are a RANGE OF OPTIONS available to us regarding punishments”- nudge, nudge, wink, wink.

So it may well be that the SPL (accidentally on purpose) put forward a case (as per your theory) that was never going to carry much weight.

  10. Monaghan1900 on

Sevcomedy forensic team publishes its findings:

“The attacker – and arson is an attack – must have had very powerful motives. Was it because the garage housed the new super Rangers bus – a symbol of the status of Rangers as the biggest and most successful football club in Scotland? It is a valid question. And one which, imo, the police should be asking.”

    ——

“I honestly believe our bus was the target and that the initial motive for this serious crime was because of it’s registration. R 1 WTP. That’s the message I see in it, from those who torched it. We were more the target as a club and fanbase than the bus was. It was just a shining symbol of that though, who we are. The People…..Everything here is just speculation on my part but it’s not rocket science. Our new state of the art bus in the midst of the towering inferno with a regi’ on it that represents the entire ethos of RFC. Case closed. They torched it and they did it for that regi’. An arson attack like this is as serious as it gets, add sectarian and we must be talking lengthy time.”

    ——

“The bus registration can be transferred to the new bus hopefully”

Cheers. If not on the lines as ou suggest then something parallel happened. There never should have been a TV contract based on 4 Celtic V Rangers games (if there eve was). It immediately compromsed sporting integrity and if Sky asked for it the answere should have been No!.

This is why there needs to be checks and balances in the system with SFA safeguarding integrity (don’t laugh) and the SPLFL pursuing commercial gain that does not brig about the downfall of our game.

Going back to integrity and the SFA – those in charge have compromised themselves way past savin.

  12. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

    Cheers Auldheid,

I’m currently working on a “timeline” re the Sky deals (there were several!). Offers up loads of questions for a journo (yeah, I know!).

Oh, and regarding “observing the principles of loyalty, integrity and sportsmanship in accordance with the rules of fair play”, these are some of Murray’s quotes from the transcript of the FTT:

By making contributions to the Trust, the company would be able to contribute a larger amount than an equivalent bonus or salary payment as no income tax or national insurance contributions would be deducted.

I think it was a method of us acquiring, especially football wise, better players in a more cost effective manner than we would be able do so.

As a club, we have been very successful, because we’ve been able to attract players of a certain standard that, perhaps, we may not have been able to do otherwise.

  16. The contrasting Celtic fans perception of saint Victor, but sinner Gary?

This one could go to the last day of the transfer window and Celtic may

be quite happy to let it run.

Last January Celtic were in an impossible situation of selling CL tickets whilst potentially selling their No;1 striker, and correctly resisted. Nothing has changed in that Gary Hooper is still, the best goalscorer at the club, but the alleged unattractive suitors can’t match Celtic’s valuation.

It’s unlikely if Gary leaves now he’ll feature in any euro competition, if I was in his boots, I’d opt to sign on again for Celtic ensuring the club get the right future transfer fee, he plays on again in europe and continues to score goals.

He could easily negotiate a clause allowing him to leave when the fee is met, and the buying club is of his choice.

OK – but…what has to be considered is – would AT be so brave with his opinions IF – he had to live up here amongst the ‘peepil’ – every day – like Keevins ?

  19. A suspected fire-raising attack on a coach depot has destroyed Rangers’ new team bus, the club has confirmed.

The coach was among several vehicles which went ablaze at the Bruce’s Coaches garage in Main Street in Salsburgh, Lanarkshire, on Saturday.

Rangers manager Ally McCoist said: “It saddens me. It really does. I think it’s pathetic that people would go to these extremes.”

An investigation is under way. Police are treating the blaze as suspicious.

The building was badly damaged by the fire when the roof collapsed. No members of staff were in the premises at the time.

Mr McCoist added: “It sounds like a premeditated attack on Rangers’ bus and I’m gutted about it, but thankfully nobody’s been killed.”

Police said early indications were that the fire was set deliberately.

They have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.

Swally thinks burning a bus is pathetic, premeditated, people going to extremes.

When a fellow manager is sent bullets and explosive devices in the mail he says nothing. The cheeky chappy really is a loathsome man.

Always interesting to follow this discussion.

However, one element I haven’t seen you mention this morning is the potentially significant blog entry on the SPL website attributed to Neil Doncaster. It isn’t dated, but it definitely pre-dates the LNS decision. I know because I wrote about it on CQN before that.

It came up for discussion, you may remember, on a Radio Scotland programme when Stuart Cosgrove referred to it in discussion with Doncaster. Cosgrove assumed that Doncaster had only just written it, and this was in the days following LNS. Doncaster didn’t correct him.

That doesn’t really matter, I suppose. Perhaps this was just part of Doncaster’s attempt to tell both sides of the debate what he thought they wanted to hear. It’s hard-hitting, though, for him. It seems 100% clear from this that Doncaster does believe Rangers gained a sporting advantage from their non-payment of debts, which of course they did.

  22. Sad to hear of Hibs Legend, Lawrie Reilly passing away….

He was a real gentleman. My mate was a regular in his pub in Leith and he invited Lawrie to his wedding. I spent a great 45 mins or so in his company where the Coronation Cup Final was discussed in detail.

This was approx 20 years ago, and to that point (which would have been 40 years or so after this game) he still could not believe the performance of John Bonnar, our keeper…….anointed was the word he used….

God Bless Lawrie, rest in peace.
