Drama Queens, LostBhoys and where we came from

537

There will be no mention of ‘Drama Queens’ from me, but those who were uncontrollably distressed by ‘defeats’ in meaningless friendlies will no doubt be delighted to lean a Celtic team largely staffed by undergraduates got the better of Brentford yesterday.  The rest of us remain unmoved, although I was pleased Amido Balde received some encouragement.

As many of you will know, the LostBhoys have been broadcasting podcasts covering Celtic’s history in recent months.  It has been an incredibly professional, informative and entertaining look at our club through the years.   This weekend they broadcast a decade I helped them cover, 1950-1960.

It encapsulated a seminal period for Celtic.  When the SFA ruled the club would face suspension if they continued to fly the Irish flag, we could have gone out of business, or forever been robbed of our heritage.  The decade saw many of the great names in our history at Celtic Park: McGrory, Tully, Stein, Fallon, McNeill, Chalmers, Auld, Gribben and Hogan, as well as the ever-influential, Sir Robert Kelly, but to those at the time it looked like we were heading nowhere.  Celtic lost more games in the 50s than in any other decade, but as we know, it’s darkest before the dawn….

There are great contributions from Charlie Gallacher and John Fallon, and Terry Dick, son of Glen Daly, who recorded The Celtic Son, told us how the song came into being (it was basically the work of Charlie Tully).

You can download this episode here but catch them all, you’ll be glad you did.

Two days until football returns to Celtic Park; can’t wait.

  1. One man’s “wee tyrant” is another man’s “strong leader”.

We needed a strong leader when Fergus came in. He did the business. Would the others have been able preserve our history?

  2. twists n turns on

Gordy..this is what I sent to those whose mail addresses I had.

Just to say one of the syndicate horses – Tara Dancer – runs in the 3.15pm Southwell tomorrow. I will say at the outset that there are 2 horses in the race that I don’t think she can beat, namely “As I am” and “Darcey Diva”. That leaves me looking for a tote place for 3rd in a 9 runner race.

    Paddy Brennan is up on ours, which is a definite help, but there is a little history behing Tara Dancer which makes the result a shade unpredicatable tomorrow, meaning she may actually run a bit better than I expect. Here is why;

Tara Dancer had one run last year. Finished 50+lengths behind the winner. Mrs Robeson (trainer) accepted she had run her too soon, but was still very disappointed at her race performance. In her work at home she had been doing ok without being extended, so when they hit the 4 f marker and she started to struggle, she assumed she just needed filling out and was too weak to do herself justice. With that in mind, she was sent to grass for a season, and has come back stronger. However, on the gallops, she was not seeing her work out. She runs at home alongside Ogee, (more about him in a minute), and he just runs away from her on the finishing straight.

We had the vet scope Tara, and he said she was clear, but it was suggested she may be dislocating her lower palate, and advised a tongue tie. This was duly tried, and success, Ogee couldn’t pass her the next day on the gallops, so, we are hoping the tongue tie works the oracle tomorrow. She did her last serious piece of work last Thursday in preparation for tomorrow, and did it well. All that remains to be seen is how she will cope when asked to do 2.5 miles tomorrow.

Bearing in mind she’s been 400+ days off the track, a watching brief is all I could advise with perhaps a small amount each way, or on a tote place, if you are looking to bet her. My opinion? As I say, I think “As I am” will win tomorrow and Darcey Diva is the danger to that one, but if the tongue tie was to work, then a place could be on the cards.

Paddy Brennan will be told to give her plenty room around her and just chase her round, assess the situation as it develops, and tell us what he thinks after the race. Certainly if it’s clear 4f out that she’s off the bridle, she wont be beaten up. Another day another dollar!

In the race after Tara, one of the stables other runners, the aforementioned Ogee runs. He Is owned by Sir Evelyn De Rothschild and has been a grand old horse. A race for some old hasbeens really, and as far as has beens go, Ogee is probably as good as most of them on his day. He is a definite each way chance, but I think with Nicky Henderson having a runner, and Cockney Trucker with AP up, plus 3 x 7 year olds, it’s a difficult call. Ogee switches off a little mid race then starts to run on again at the business end. Jimmy McCarthy rides him and he knows the horse inside out. I think he’ll run ok but whether he’s good enough I am not sure.

My advice – A win bet on “As I am” –

a tote forecast on As I Am and Darcey Diva,

and a tote place on Tara Dancer just in case!

In Ogee’s race – I’d back Cockney Trucker and a place bet on Ogee.

I do realise this is a message that tells you feck all really in respect of betting, but I’m telling you what I know. :-)

Hmmm Tara gambled from 16s to 8s. Ain’t my money or stable money! Whilst the rain wont harm her chances, she aint an 8/1 shot.
