Dundee and the heights of Scottish football history

834

Congratulations to Dundee FC who return to the top flight of Scottish football for the first time in seven years.  Back in the 60s Dundee were a top European team.  They won the league in 1962 and in the preliminary round of the European Cup they trounced West German champions, Cologne, 8-1 at Dens.  Cologne put a more respectable face on the aggregate result two weeks later, winning 4-0 in front of 40,000 fans.

Dundee went on to beat Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon 4-2 on aggregate in the first round proper, this while Portuguese runners-up, Benfica, retained the European Cup only five months earlier.  If the Cologne result was the most enduring in the collective memory, the 4-1 win over Sporting at Dens was one of the all-time great results in Scottish football history.

Anderlecht were next victims, losing 1-4 in front of 65,000 fans in Brussels before the fairy tale ended in the semi final against eventual winners, Milan, at a packed San Siro.  A Wembley final against Benfica was Milan’s prize, a tie Dundee would surely have fancied.

The result against Cologne is historically the most impressive but this was not the case at the time.  This was a period before the Bundesliga when West German teams participated in regional leagues, with the winners playing-off to enter the European Cup.  Once German teams were able to join a financially prosperous league instead of being shackled by historical custom, they never looked back.  Dundee, like all Scottish clubs, are disenfranchised from the history they could be creating by the poor value of their TV market.

It’s time for a change, not just for the sake of Celtic!  If only the guys running the show knew the history and heritage of the team promoted today, or believed in the potential of Scottish clubs.

Protest option complete and season ticket renewal back on track. I hope Peter has kept my seat warm!

Paul67 Interesting Take – What else might help Celtic ‘flourish’?

I would suggest that season renewal is not at the top of the list which should include:

Astructural clean out at the SFA

Removal of key officials who have failed their governance objectives

Removal of ‘hidden’ huns from positions of influence (yes you Darryl)

Removal of the current President AND his predecessor

Negotiation of TV and sponsorship to be conducted by ‘competent’ practitioners drawn from the meber clubs

Ensuring that outstanding matters of investigation and punishment are concluded and enacted

Ensuring that the term ‘facilitate’ does not involve ignoring, bending, forgetting, financing or otherwise assisting a shameful, cheating, corrupt and unapologetic ‘institution’ of dubious worth.

My fitba loving old man took a 13 year old me to Dundee v AC Milan . We went to see Jose Altafini and the truly fabulous Gianni Rivera . Neither disappointed .

  6. that is all that was wanted, fairness, it took a while but lets hope the rules are now and forever applied on an honest manner which upholds integrity.

first thing first, the spl need to get the t.v deal sorted, get to playing some football again, look to introduce the changes offered by spl last week, because i actually think many of the ideas had merit such as the larger league, fairer distribution of t.v. commercial income etc…

for the first time in 2 decades decisions about the game can be made in the best interest of the game, rather than the need to supply t.v with 4 old firm games there is no choice to make everyone knows what needs to happen lets get it done. think the only way we can avoid this in the future is to have our own scottish football television which would easily sell to 200k at the right price to our football community.

another thing, i hate when people talk about there not being enough quality teams to make up a 16 team league, it is essential that a league structure consists of v.good, good, avarage and poor teams (reletive to league). the gap between the v. good and good teams can often lessen due to having more avarage and poor teams.

guess its true that some times lesser is more

  7. Paul well done matey you have played a blinder in all of this.

Now go and take a well earned break you deserve it, I’m surprised you haven’t put me on block lol.

  8. Can hardly believe that shower have actually done the right thing.

Now lets get a Celtic reserve team in division 3, Just to make sure newco need to wait another year at least before they get to promotion.

  9. Paul 67. Renewed my season ticket at first opportunity. My love of Celtic is not influenced by the now dead, tawdry cheating club from the south side. Nor is it influenced by the underhandedness of officials who are out of their depth.

But I still answered your call. Today I purchased a season ticket for my 9 year old nephew who is now a proud season ticket holding bhoy. Ticket office was doing decent business today.

Cost for those who asked earlier was £129. The £50 tickets are now gone.

Let’s reinvigorate and support Scottish football. Buy a season ticket today.

Congrats also to Dundee. Good memories on being in Dens Club prior to Utd matches a number of years ago.

Nothing against the grounds in Div3 but they’ll look like tattyfields before Elbows and co take to the ‘field’.

    A few random thoughts/questions…

Do you think that Bomber maybe got a wee swatch at that Regan e-mail a few weeks ago?

Maybe the SFA need to divert a wee bit of that £1 Million corruption slush fund towards Dunfermline to keep them quiet?

Could Newco Rangers no just play their first team in the Nexgen competition – they will all be the right age?

Should David Cameron come out and proclaim the Sevco decision as a great example of the Big Society actually working?

  20. ROW Z - Let Celtic Flourish by the Cleansing of the 'den! on

I have no sympathy for Dunfermline.

They had the chance at the time to ask for transparency, action and fairness. They chose suppine butt-licking to RFC.

They made their choice and ‘integrity’ suggests Dundee are a more deserving case based on Dunfermline’s previous actions.

    Taxi for Dorin…

“Dorin Goian could leave Rangers within 24 hours if the club has no alternative but to play in the Third Division.

Goian returned to training at Murray Park on Monday morning but although he has travelled to Scotland in the hope of continuing his Ibrox career, the defender will move on if the club does not get a last-minute reprieve.

The SPL, which will discuss Rangers’ situation at their AGM on Monday, voted against allowing Charles Green’s newco Rangers to transfer the share from the old club.

Green subsequently applied to join the SFL and the club was offered a place in Division Three.

Goian’s agent Florin Manea said that the player has discussed his predicament with Green and will quit the club if the leagues’ position does not change.

“I spoke with Charles Green yesterday and today,” Manea told STV. “He totally understands our situation.

“Dorin has promised to stay at Rangers if they are in the SPL or the First Division but there is no way he can stay if they are in the Third Division.

“Mr Green promised to keep Dorin on the same wage if Rangers were in the First Division but he cannot pay those wages if they are in the bottom tier.”

The Romanian has a range of options available should he decide to end his time in Scotland after just one season.

“At the moment we have four firm offers from clubs in Turkey, Germany, Spain and Romania,” Manea confirmed. “We have also held discussions with Olympiakos.

“If there is a definite decision on Rangers’ future today then Dorin will very likely leave the club by tomorrow.”

Seems strange[ to me ] that many criticized his work rate and his reluctance to tackle. There is a great film where Pirlo talks of spending hours and hours watching the Abatino control and pass the ball.

  29. Amusement.

I walked into my local cafe a few days ago. Astounded of forehead to see The Bomber in there with a couple of chums. A baldy mini-convention.

Dilemma. Go to the seat right next to them or a nicer sofa seat a little distance off but not in eavesdrop range ?

They had already clocked me: tall; handsome; follicly unchallenged and in possession of most of my own teeth.

I guess the biggest giveaway was my large green hooded jerkin.

So I sat on the sofa.

However I did overhear some snippets. Yer man is very passionate about the fans and I give him credit for that. Whyte still seems to be a rank bad yin and blah, blah, blah it was all the stuff he wittered on about to that poorly attended gathering of like minded ones in some hotel recently.

Umbro got a mention and this got me thinking that a new kit could be a good money spinner for their troubled times ahead. That is, if you can persuade the troops that YOU are the real Gers.

Not that I care one way or another. I who can easily afford to buy all the towels I require scoffs at their grubbing in the dirt.

On leaving the cafe I nearly bumped into yet another baldy dude.

He had that red and white vertical striped top on, and I had failed to notice before just how horrible that red-bib-on-the-back design really is.
