Early stats point to Sviatchenko effect

623

Well done to everyone for the win against Morton. After a difficult week it was good to get the result sorted out before halftime. Fixing poor form is seldom a straightforward business, but yesterday’s win was our sixth game in a month, with the loss of only one goal in that period.

The five games before this run didn’t produce a single clean sheet. Erik Sviatchenko started only the last of those five games (at Pittodrie), so while the sample size isn’t enough to draw clear conclusions, it’s an early indication the Dane has tightened things up at the back.

One thing Erik hasn’t been able to do is turn Celtic into a team which looks like it knows how to defend a corner kick. A Morton corner fell into the six-yard box to an attacker’s foot (never mind head). We’ve seen dozens of these horror-show set-pieces this season. They have cost us in the Champions League, Europa League, League Cup and in the Premiership. The Scottish Cup is the only tournament we’ve got away with it, so far.

You are I are beyond despairing at this point, let’s just get it sorted, Celtic.

  1. Your first post at 12.39 referred to the upcoming SF against the newclub and made no reference to the Morton tie.

We were discussing the upcoming match, not yesterday’s game.

However, you should know all this as you posted it. And have had it posted more than once.

All this “old firm” talk or lack of from Celtic should be put to bed next season when the weans get all league games included on the season ticket as is the case now.

And nothing but admiration from me, living just outwith the Glasgow area, for supporters who go to the trouble and expense of attending matches from long distances.

It’s just that to get to a land in which a 4 year old club can appear in their 52nd SC semi-final, and where ‘incorporation’ means ‘separation’ and ‘liquidation’ means ‘survival’, entry via Alice’s wee mirror would appear to be the optimum route.

“I will not do this lightly(breaks my heart), but there is no doubt what so ever that this is necessary, who wants to watch a rigged “contest”?. Oh wait, let me answer that, that will be the OF fans. Go if you must, make any excuse to yourself you must, but don’t kid us or yourselves, this helps the good ole Gers and corrupted Sfa way more than any good it does our club. The “Old Firm” trademark was included in the bundle that Sports Direct took ownershp of last year. Presumably it has been assigned to TRFC Ltd now when the rest of it was re-assigned back.

As for the use of the term “Old Firm”, it is used almost exclusively now by those who wish to borrow Celtic’s status to lend validity to the new club playing out of Ibrox. The more that the new club can be associated with Celtic, the more difficult it is to distinguish the new club from the old club.

The practice extends to the most tenuous of links at time, but the objective is always to place the new club within Celtic’s field of reference, drawing upon historic association to validate current status. Keith Jackson’s interview with Neil Doncaster last week is an exemplar.

It’s pretty basic stuff, and regrettably, pretty effective at defining the narrative. That Celtic themselves will not participate in it is, in some respects, indicative of what they feel constrained from saying explicitly.

This has been done to death and we go round in circles – heres what it comes down to for me.

Yourself, NegAnon, MWD, etc all make lots of good points. We are all on the same page with regard to the status of ‘Rangers’ and most of us were there when opposition players they shouldnt have been able to attract impacted games against us and tournaments we entered.

We don’t agree on the way forward and Celtics ‘role’ in the rise of Rangers 2012.

    But forget all that.

You have the issue with Celtic, which you’ve made abundantly clear.

The question is, what are you doing about it? Is witholding your monies and telling everyone about it daily on CQN really going to have an impact?

There is so much else going on that your concerns may just be lost and written off as collateral damage because your voice is not being heard…

You can’t assume that just because there is a downward trend in attendance at CP that the board will attribute this to people of your mindset witholding funds. I believe season ticket sales actually increased at CP for this season, weekly attendance notwithstanding.

My advice would be do something discernible to get your point across – you all put enough time and effort into eloquently outlining your concerns on here but you are either preaching to the converted or to those who don’t agree with your approach within a small part of the (online) support.

No one wants the club to lose good Celtic men and don;t we all know that those who attended during the Murray era deserve to enjoy the good times now.

Celtic have agreed not to use Old Firm terminology but are they aware a not insignificant number of fans consider this insufficient?

I’m not sure – but if you channel your efforts differently, you may be able to find out.

I thought it was the opposite. I though Celtic owned all the useful versions of Old Firm and thus nobody can market it without our permission, and if we don’t allow that I think it sends a message about our opinion of the new club.

“Following a 3-0 victory against Morton in the last round, Celtic have been drawn to play Rangers in the semi final of the Scottish Cup.

This match will be only the second time the teams have met since the liquidation of the old Rangers FC in 2012, and the subsequent formation of the new Rangers FC under Charles Green’s consortium.

Tickets priced £28 for adults, £16 Concessions, are restricted in the first instance to those on the Home Ticket Scheme, and following take up, will be made available to Season Ticket holders on a first come first served basis”

Weeminger: No idea. I noticed with interest that despite the historic stats-fest that was used by TRFC Ltd to announce the Cup draw, the term “Old Firm” was absent.

It may indeed be that the terms of the ownership agreement provide for such restrictions, but I wouldn’t have a scooby on that one. One for the Celtic Company Sec to answer.

  18. Here’s the official website

CELTIC have drawn Rangers in the semi final of the Scottish Cup after beating Morton 3-0 earlier today.

The Glasgow club beat Dundee 4-0 in their quarter-final tie and the semi finals are scheduled to be played at Hampden Park on the weekend of April 16/17.

Full ticket details will be published as soon as possible after the date and kick-off time have been confirmed.

  19. I am not a fan of our board and their strategy leaves a lot to be desired.

One thing I have some sympathy on is their reluctance to deal with the cheat issue.

Had we as a support continued to turn up and get behind the club financially and by that I mean 50,000 plus actually at the games then I think we would be well within our rights to question their silence.

But guess what, to our eternal shame we didn’t, we stopped turning up in our droves. I personally find this really difficult to understand. It means the board need to consider, what if the attendances get worse.

I hear loads of excuses, it’s too expensive, it’s too cold, it’s on the telly, it’s the board, it’s the manager, all excuses in my view.

I am 51, I have seen a lot worse than this, their 9 in a row, their 3-0 victory and mock huddle etc. I had expected we would be partying every weekend, but no, it seems we have gorged and are now fat and lazy.

The diedco fans are laughing at us.

Forget Ronny, forget the whole board, this is our club, ours, it’s time we started to show it by turning up and being vocal.

My ` safe` selection until our players regain their confidence would be:

    Gordon ( just );

    Janko Boyata Svietchenko Tierney

    Bitton

    GMS Brown McGregor Johansen

    Griffiths.

The midfielders` collective job would be to make it as simple as possible for Erik and Dedryck to find a team-mate with a short pass!

  21. I listened to the John Fallon podcast yesterday, absolutely loved it apart fae the barking dug (bet it’s a wee terrier) and BT’s mum interrupting them for a diet coke lol. BTW BT gie yer da back his books lol.

Spoke like a true fan and shared some myths of the mhan we called the Latter Day Christ. Didnae know the Bear widnae go tae his funeral. I was hame when he passed away but was back here when the funeral occurred.

He spoke about THAT game which still rankled with me 40+ years later and I upset BT when I raised my concerns over it, unfortunately I didnae know the whole story, he did.

I don’t recall the 1st goal but did the 2nd in the last minute, John reckons the ball took a deflection off a player, I always thought it hit a divot.

One of the myths which I heard within days of the game that John was quite nonchalant in the dressing room at the end and a punch up occurred. I know that this urinated off a lot of the fans and not just myself. We as a support had/have to face that mob in workplaces, colleges etc, the players’ didnae which caused so much anger.

Seemingly this was not so as John says he was sick as a pig after it. What none of us knew was that he was slated to play against Clyde in the ne’erday game with Ronnie being rested (might have been carrying a wee injury) but Jock nixed that idea in the dressing room.

John says that he was in the games room when he was told to go in and get dressed as Ronnie wasn’t fit. I find it strange that Jock left it so late as I had heard that morning in Robertson’s pub at Alexandria Fountain fae a bluenose that both Ronnie and big Billy were struggling to make this game after being injured against the Bully Wee.

I have read of other former Celts including Lions that wurnae that keen on the Big Mhan and he was not the mhan the fans portrayed him.

In saying all that I will forever be grateful to Jock Stein, I was a young lad of 17 when he came back and by the time he left I was married with 2 weans and another on the way. He made my young life so happy, oh aye there were some down times, Milan 1970, Hampden against the harry wraggs, but they were few and far between.

John still attends games and pays to get in, another sad story in our history that he was made to do so not long after being forced to move on. I wonder if other former players, those not involved in the hospitality suites, still attend.

Wullie Maley was another who treated people with disdain, he was allegedly very gruff and wanted tae sell our greatest ever goalscorer behind his back and yet the fans still sing about him.

It is well known that Wullie after leaving Celtic never returned for 13 years although that may have been due to the board refusing to pay the tax on his 2500 guineas golden handshake (no like us lol). It has been said that he watched his fitba at the bigot pit and regaled one and all in his ant-Celtic stories, might be another myth.

Personally there are a couple of companies out there that I left as a result of effers I was reporting tae and I’ll never darken their doors again, not even for a visit or free golf day. Then again they do not hold the affection that CFC do for me.

Once again thanks John for enlightening us to the on goings at the inner sanctum of Parkheid and also for still being there for the Bhoys. Oh aye and sorry for doubting you.

BTW, orange person, huns nae wonder the Big Mhan called you a bigot lol.

  24. It’s hard to imagine a situation where Celtic can continue indefinitely to say nothing about the cheating and the new club reality and hope that the support will carry on as before.

Res 12 is complex and Auldheid has asked for time and patience etc, something we have all given.

Social media and supporters’ sites like CQN etc have all stated the blindingly obvious just about every day since June 2012.

The MSM had it all on their front pages. The TV stations, including the publicly funded BBC, had accurate reports of the failure of the CVA and the inevitable liquidation.

Just about every prominent Rangers supporter has a history on social media of expressing the view that the club dies with liquidation.

Their former players and managers have all said the same, Walter even welcomed the New Rangers club.

The Court of Session has heard from Charles Green’s advocate in recent months that his client admits to forming a new club.

Despite all this we are being asked to swallow a big fat stupid lie. A con.

Peter Lawwell cracked his Rory Bremner joke. That was something. Since then nothing.

I understand that he is running a business. Let’s all accept that. Speaking up might cause problems for staff, Neil Lennon received bombs n bullets etc…the courts have still to have their say, ongoing action etc etc.

Do nothing, say nothing. A business strategy. But here’s the thing. If doing nothing is the wrong thing for the business but you think that it is the right thing to do then there is a conflict.

Don’t think that changing the manager is the answer. Ronny might just win his way out of trouble. And the unhappiness isn’t only or even mostly to do with him and his 4-2-3-1. It’s to do with the lie.

First thing this morning I got a voicemail from Sunday Herald enthusiastically pitching for another Statement from Celtic supporters.

    What price the truth?

Well the support spoke the last time. Now it’s the club’s turn.

It’s only business, nothing personal. Just tell the truth and united our support. Or move aside and let someone else do it.

    Gobbler,

Anyone that’s read your drivel will know you will be there, it’s the only game you turned up to last season, your a confirmed glory hunting old firm supporter so it’s no surprise the only reason you’ll travel from turkey is to be at an old firm game. You love the old firm more than you support Celtic.

By all means keep up your drivel and try your best to make me the brunt of your deflection tactic but your a very vary poor example of a Celtic supporter and your actions betray that.

Bye now, I will be reading no more of your pathetic drivel.

  26. Under the Insolvency Act 1986, Rangers should be a prohibited name. Even The Rangers is too close in association to the club that was liquidated.

That’s why Sevco is much more appropriate.

Another law that doesn’t apply to them, apparently.

    Can’t believe the 276 creditors didn’t object.

Or clubs who were cheated by Rangers, for that matter.

  27. Video Celts make a good point. Sevco living outwith their means is penalising the rest of the club’s,in the lower leagues.

    New,club. Same issue

  28. Shooie

Agree with a lot of that but our fans did turn up and buy the season books in their thousands .. We were fed the lies about the board waiting for the right time etc

With best players getting moved on and dud projects brought in their place along with club silence we have gradually seen crowds dwindle the past few seasons.

If the club won’t fork out when we are in good position why should the fans..season books are not cheap nor is travel and day expenses.

  29. Imagine if you owned a business, went bust Owing loads of suppliers and then got a proxy to buy the assets, open up again in the same venue with the same trading name and insisted that every ad and publication mentioned the unbroken history of the business.

Lots of No Surrender and worse memorabilia on show, cant stand the sight of them. So for a neutral venue I wont go, will probably get offered tickets and refuse, last time for the League Cup they wanted names on the tickets from memory so I was unwilling to buy them and give them to friends

Next season at Celtic Park, since it seems inevitable that the Hun will be promoted I’ll be in my usual seat but not at Hampdump. No issue for me for the Bhoys that want to go, their choice.
