Effective players

366

We had a family conversation this will about the most effective Celtic players we have seen for each position, not necessarily the best there.

I went straight to Alan Thompson. Alan was a hard left-mid when he arrived from Aston Villa in 2000, who became a wing-back under Martin O’Neill. His contribution to that successful Celtic team is incredible. The winner against Barcelona, Champions League goals and so many against Rangers, tell a story, as do his assists.

He was loved by his manager and capped by England while at Celtic. Still, he had limits. He was slow to recover fitness after injury and did not have the finess of a McStay or Collins, not everyone “got it”.

David Turnbull is a different type of player but I see parallels. He is also a player managers rate. Lots more to come from David.

  1. I think David Turnbull would benefit from playing in a team with the game in front of him, can see a pass alright, and that position would suit his lack of pace also, didn’t he play in that area most of the time for Motherwell? por cierto.

    Thanks for the reply.

I agree with you in the individual.

Sadly I fear timing is everything and it is highly unlikely that there will ever be a better time to defeat the Tories than in 2 years time once Truss has shown herself to be the ineffectual useless mendacious ‘sound bite’ led politician which she is.

Scrutiny increase will show her up for what she is but only a truly credible and united opposition will be enough to cut through. I doubt KS will deliver it.

  3. I think we will see the best of Turnbull this season – he was hacked down last season with no protection from the refs (similar to Gucci tackle) . Despite this , he come back and score some vital goals and made passes to the forward runners.

    great footballer with creative mind.

All we lack in midfield is pace – Hatate, mcgregor, O’reiley, Turnbull , Mooy – all once paced!

  4. Jaysus,

Hope we’re not paying the Celtic Park banner contractors by the hour.

    Feels painfully slow.

There is no proper opposition in the UK system any longer, the three unionist parties are all arguing over the same small piece of little England. Even with the state of this current government Starmer would need to hope for a coalition to gain power in the UK. If you haven’t already watch the tory leadership debate from last night. The debate itself was pish, what is interesting is the audience, scary that they all voted tory last time around. Lots of young people and minorities, labour is fucked.

  6. As below, Turnbull is more clinical but the other 3 are more Angeball-like (technical, bravery, pressing, work rate, etc).

I think they all need to improve on their goals.

    (21/22 season)

    Turnbull 9 in 34 games – 1 in 4

    Hatate 4 in 21 games – 1 in 5

    O’Riley 3 in 19 games – 1 in 6

    McGregor 4 in 52 games – 1 in 13

There is not proper functioning opposition at Holyrood as well.

Just as there is no proper functioning government at Holyrood to make things.

Just a cast of thousands delivering pre-packs to the media to run.

The media response to the drugs death crisis was shameful.

  8. Big Wavy – we seem to lack shots from outside the box – sometimes looks like we want to walk it in.

No politician, let alone the leader of the Labour Party, shouldn’t know the history of The Hun newspaper, and the city of Liverpool.

  10. Gene,

Agreed but I think it’s also a system issue too with Ange. Overload on wings with a hard cross leading to a goal (think Maeda, GG, Abada, Jota and Kyogo one touch finishes) is his template.

We get chances and should be better but I suspect they are coached into always finding the best opportunity rather than the edge of the box worldie.

    BIG WAVY

I agree broadly but I would exempt Callum from xgoals criticism as he doesn’t play as much in the attacking third in Ange’s system . Which is a pity , because when he storms into the opposition box as he did to set up our equaliser at Ibrox , he is much more effective IMO.

An Tearmann…Livi Bhoy’s article on the Celtic Star is about his trip to Middlesbrough on a CSC…don’t know if you found it but click on Celtic Star and you will find it👍

  13. England shire has been gerrymandered to suit Tory voting. Will be surprised if most on here ever get to see a Labour govt.again.England shire awash with butchers aprons.Since Brexit, they have ramped up the jingoism, nationhood, into the psyche of the English electorate.

If you ever want to see a Labour govt again, vote Independence.People of Scotland have shown in the past their political leanings, and would do so again to a party they trusted. The Engerland version will never cut it.

  14. Stebhoy

I think speed of thought in midfield is more important than physical pace.

We’ve got pace on the flanks and the forwards through the middle.

  15. Sadly the Horse named ” CELTIC CHAMPION” could only finish 4th @ 7/2. Some Bookies WILL Pay Out on the 4th place to anyone who may have backed it each way ?

It ran a very good race, and JUST got edged out in a photo for 3rd Place.

I for one will be looking out for it to run again.

Scotland votes for independence and the marketing experience never have a route to power again

It’s about the route to power, they will never have that if Scotland cedes.

    Never.

That’s why it’s important to stay in the poverty trap

    Suckle that capitalism,marketed as socialism

I am in London and the Trafalgar Square/ Strand area is decorated like its the 12th of July (without the KAT slogan)…doesn’t really bother me as I guess it is the capital of the country…unless we get a chance to vote to for independence of course

Never really liked Liverpool FC as I was distraught when Kenny left but with Klopp in charge and their fine fans singing F the Tories I rather like them now.

  21. TIMBHOY163

That’s a silly comment. There were many brilliant players played for Celtic who were not fans , but became fans.

Story doing the rounds about Ideguchi getting a horrific injury at training today.

Supposed to have had a collision with one of the metal players.

I hope it is rubbish, but if not, I hope he has a quick recovery.

An Tearmann…cheers mate often come down through my work 6 or 7 times a year …although not working this week…visiting Brighton also..was meant to go to Marseilles, which I love, but for various reasons sacked that and came down here instead have been having a jolly old time. You’ve chosen to live in an authoritarian country with an appalling record of human rights abuses. (‘Aye but the weather’s dead nice, and it’s awfae cheap, so it is’.)

So save us your pronouncements on UK politics.

Thought it sounded far fetched. Couldn’t imagine what they would be doing at training to collide with a metal player.

I don’t recall Alan Thomson being regularly used as a wing back .

I also get the heebiejeebies when you big up a player who doesn’t like a tackle and is a bit of a fast track bully.

We haven’t replaced the invention and big match goals that Tom Rogic provided .

I wasted always a big fan of Tam .

But I don’t see Turnbull filling that void in matches against Sevco .

    In Europe ?

Well Tam flattered to deceive there .
