Effective players

366

We had a family conversation this will about the most effective Celtic players we have seen for each position, not necessarily the best there.

I went straight to Alan Thompson. Alan was a hard left-mid when he arrived from Aston Villa in 2000, who became a wing-back under Martin O’Neill. His contribution to that successful Celtic team is incredible. The winner against Barcelona, Champions League goals and so many against Rangers, tell a story, as do his assists.

He was loved by his manager and capped by England while at Celtic. Still, he had limits. He was slow to recover fitness after injury and did not have the finess of a McStay or Collins, not everyone “got it”.

David Turnbull is a different type of player but I see parallels. He is also a player managers rate. Lots more to come from David.

    Thanks for providing her name.

Interesting back story but I fear she is now drunk on the sound of her own voice.

She was far too aggressive and hectoring in her dealings with KS.

If she was wanting to discuss issues then surely she could have let him speak.

She knows that she had a free hit to nothing.

KS answers back — he is silencing a woman with a point of view.

KS sits and takes it — he is a wimp and not strong enough to run the country.

The whole thing has the feel of a pre-pack set up to diminish KS — look at the way the encounter is being reported on the web / in the Tory papers.

Useful Tory inspired idiot doing their dirty work for them and burnishing her own ego at the same time.

She is not working for the good of progressive politics in the UK — she is working to her own narrow agenda that funnily enough fits like a hand in glove to the Tory agenda as they scrabble to keep their own threeway divisions out of the public view.

Progress is never easy — especially when we don’t seem to know who the enemy is.

I’m hoping to see a marked improvement this season, and for that improvement to continue next season.

That would probably require a degree of flexibility in the playing style to cope with the better quality sides. AP did show signs last season of not being too dogmatic in adhering to Angeball when the need arose, so here’s hoping.

Thanks for the response ernieBhoy, It is gonnae be a rollercoaster (marc Thank you) of a Season especially in the CL………. It’s all goosed because of this WC.

Ange takes these things on the chin and then Delivers.

I Hope you are well ernie.

  4. Regarding David Turnbull watching him at Celtic the vibes I get is he isn’t Celtic Minded as was Stuart Armstrong is that a fair assessment,Like Armstrong he Turnbull will not be at Celtic Next season

As BB said earlier, probably have to wait and see when open in Oct. I was hoping for more capacity as on the rare occasions I turn up early, it is always full and it is 15 min walk to a boozer which will be rammed at that point

Fan zone chat — the egg chasers had a license for their fan zone at P/head for the 2019 Cup Final.

That was my memory of that event — the weather let them down but they had put in a lot of work.

They had drink and music to the fore.

That must have been licensed by the GCC.

I fear that they are playing games — get the ET involved.

Regarding a fan zone — surely the drink license would be the gravy?

We desperately need the extra facilities outside the ground.

We are in a poorer position that we were in 1972 — now at one shop instead of two.

Sounds like fighting talk to me.

What are you basing your opinion on?

  9. Most significant signing was Jock Stein from Llanelli in 1951 – set the wheels in motion – you know the rest

  10. I think Turnbull is developing into a great player. He’s got that Paul McStay swagger to him and if he can get anywhere close to him, then he’ll be a hero for us.

  11. The 88 cup final was on the Beeb over the weekend.

No suprise the best player with the most skilss, and even daring do tackling was our Paul.

The suprise for me is to see him again and actually how good he really was, you can kind of forget.

DT is a fine player, but no where near comparable to Paul at thesame age.

  12. !!Bada Bing!! on

Don Robertson doing the huns game, you can be sure he will have his red card out on Saturday, when it’s ignored or yellow against us, another Uncle Tom.

I had the impression they might be thinking about selling a season ticket for access to the kerrydale bar before and after games.

I also formed the impression that the new bar wouldn’t be opened post match. Might be picking things up wrongly though.

  14. Talking of effective players….

    *PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2022-23*

    *COMPETITION STARTING THIS WEEKEND*

Just a wee reminder that this season’s Player Of The Year competition officially kicks off in just 5 sleeps’ time 😊

If anyone wants a full explanation of how everything works just email me at the address below and I’ll happily provide the detail. But the main points to remember are as follows –

    1. Importantly, its open to all and everyone to join in when they can. No need to register, sign up or pay fees as it’s just a bit of fun. No need to vote after EVERY game but just the ones you see. And you don’t need to be in from the start – join in any time so spread the word around!

    2. All each person does is watch the game, decide which 3 players in your opinion performed best on any given day and then stick the 3 names in an email to me at SENCELPOTY@GMAIL.COM .

    3. You don’t have to put your 3 nominations in order and neither do you have to explain your reasoning behind your pick. Whilst I’m always happy to read every email I don’t always have time to reply to everyone so those detailed thoughts might be better put onto the blog? Especially those lurkers who regularly join in on the voting 😉

    4. I then add up the votes cast and issue the results for that game, usually between 10.00pm and 10.30pm on the evening following the game. These will be posted on Sentinel Celts but, again, I’ve no problem if they are then copied elsewhere.

    5. For each game, the Man Of The Match (as voted by you, readers!) wins 5 points. Next best gets 4, next gets 3 etc. These points accumulate on a game by game basis to eventually determine our Player Of The Year.

    6. Finally, please remember that absolutely anyone is welcome to join in, whether you post on here, post elsewhere, lurk, or even just know someone who posts or lurks. So, I’m happy for you to encourage friends, family etc to have their opinions counted too.

Finally, if anyone has any other thoughts, ideas or questions on this please feel free to contact me at SENCELPOTY@GMAIL.COM

You might get an ‘automatic reply’ but I’ll try and send a more personal one over the coming days.

    Thanks for reading this far.

    Jobo

  15. Turnbull is a player who has come on a lot since he joined us.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he sees his future in the EPL.

If he performs well for us while he is a Celtic Player and earns us a big wad of dosh when he leaves then good luck to him,

His current contract expires May 2024,

I think he is one where we should be seeking to extend his contract.

  16. Stx2 @ 3.52

No sure you are comparing apples with apples.

PMcS was a huge / precocious talent — first team pick at just over 17 1/2.

PMcS was nearly 24 when he played in that 88 SCF.

DT has just turned 23 plus he has had nearly a year out with injury earlier in his career.

He is to me the closest MF’er to PMcS — in terms of talent / ability / potential — that Scotland has produced in that period.

Still a bit to go — mobility could be improved on — but he is getting bettr / getting closer.

Why PMcS — the Maestro — was ever called after a crap AR car escapes me.

She was perfectly polite and coherent.

Starmer was totally unprepared. Face it, he’s useless.

And you make her sound like Baron McNicol of West Kilbride. I suppose the difference is she’s just an ordinary working class party member and isn’t in charge of running the party. How much did he get from the settlement of his court action?

I don’t recall hearing these calls for unity, and support for the leader, when Corbyn was in post. Funny that.

I assume you haven’t got round to reading the Forde report yet. I’d recommend it. You might learn something.

  18. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Quite like David Turnbull.

Admittedly he came into the team and did well against a low bar.

He and Soro pitched in last throw of the dice style by Neil Lennon.

    Suggestions…..

    More runs

More pressing high up the pitch

More ½ assists – that cheeky wee 10 yard diagonal to the wide man to set up a cross

    (He’s good at that)

More shots from outside the box

    Fewer pirouettes

  19. EL @ 4.18

She was not polite and she wasn’t coherent — rag bag of slogans fired out without any thought of a reply or discussion.

I don’t know how she managed to fit in breathing.

She is / was just a Tory useful idiot drunk on the sound of her own voice.

JC’s credibility died the day he wanted Russia to investigate the Salisbury poisoning caper. The two ham actors involved were so hopeless I thought that they must be set up sent out to embarrass VP.

And then came the invasion of the Ukraine to provide all the proof you need to see that Russia is a dried out husk of a country — a get rich quick raw materials play run for the benefit of rapacious oligarchs — with little life left in their public institutions which would allow them to carry out their basic functions.

In other words a country performing in the manner of BoJo and his attempt at governing / Brexit.

JC in 2017 moved the needle and showed that we do not need to dance to the Establishment / Treasury tune regarding new political ideas.

JC in 2019 phoned it in and the manifesto was just a laundry list of half baked good ideas with no thought given to implementation or scheduling.

Consequently in that context KS is a huge step forward.

Unlike JC he has done a real job in the real world.

If that makes you boring then so be it.,

  20. Forde report — two sets of student politicians playing games in the real world.

    Not good.

  21. MADMITCH on 26TH JULY 2022 4:39 PM

Would you regard Mandleson as a useful Tory idiot?

  22. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Couldn’t KS have delegated the Liverpool visit to one of the shadow cabinet who hasn’t written for the S*n ?

  23. I can remember MON shout to my teenage brother to shut up for giving Thompson stick one game.

He was definitely one to come in for some often undue stick due to his limitations but he must be one of the moneyball players of our age.

Not sure if there are accurate stats from that time but he must stack up against the best.

Not sure Turnbull falls in the same category. He’s limited by his lack of pace in that he’ll never make it to a top top team but I don’t think he’s a whipping boy by any means.
