Effective players

366

We had a family conversation this will about the most effective Celtic players we have seen for each position, not necessarily the best there.

I went straight to Alan Thompson. Alan was a hard left-mid when he arrived from Aston Villa in 2000, who became a wing-back under Martin O’Neill. His contribution to that successful Celtic team is incredible. The winner against Barcelona, Champions League goals and so many against Rangers, tell a story, as do his assists.

He was loved by his manager and capped by England while at Celtic. Still, he had limits. He was slow to recover fitness after injury and did not have the finess of a McStay or Collins, not everyone “got it”.

David Turnbull is a different type of player but I see parallels. He is also a player managers rate. Lots more to come from David.

  7. The technology for ceasing a season ticket for a game (to the seller) and accessing a replacement ticket (for the buyer) shouldn’t be difficult. Even in a season 1 beta form where the transaction could still be with 2 parties themselves.

There’s also a rethinking of the pre-season friendlies that I’d like to see. Market it for the kids and those who don’t get to see the Celts (concessions) that often (rather than those on hols or who see enough competitive Celtic to be bored by friendlies). Few people buying a ST see the pre-season kickabout as a value really. If it’s a kids day then you don;t have to force the council to sell you an alcohol licence and do something for the demographic.

“B team / last night’s 11 — seems to be based around the 2004 group.

That would suggest that they were last season’s U18 who did not deliver.”

    ———————————–

Why do you continue to advance hypotheses that are based on supposition and ignorance. It would take seconds to check the line up from the Berwick game-

    This was the line up

Oluwayemi, Dede (Quinn 89), Lawal, Otoo, Anderson, Letsosa, Carse (Thomson 67), Summers, Vata, Davidson, Kenny (Murphy 63).

    Subs: Luyeye, Morrison, Corr, Kelly

Those that played in the B team last year were, to my knowledge, – Oluwayemi, Dede, Lawal, Otoo, Letsosa, Summers, Vata, Davidson and Kenny. Some of the others will have played in some games(Mathew Anderson is the captain) but I did not spot this as I am, at best, keeping a casual eye on this area of Celtic rather than a forensic one. And despite this, I can confidently state that I have more of an idea of what is going on than the confident assertions of an unresearched MadMitch, who prefers gossip about school relationships to actually watching the guys play football.

The B team finished a creditable 3rd in the Lowland League last season. They are a bunch of talented young players but, like the Rangers B team that finished 2nd, they are at a huge disadvantage in playing exclusively within an age limited team and playing against teams where the players may have lesser ability and potential but are more mature and experienced. This is particularly important or defences where Goalies and CBs take time to develop.

Ideally, if we weren’t being artificially limited by a plethora of clubs that struggle to attract crowds above 300, would be to have a mix of young talent and genuine journeymen of more mature age that could then compete at a higher level than 5th tier, if allowed.

I am just as uninformed as MadMItch is about the under 18’s and their poor league performance last year. I suspect that they are operating with younger players than they are allowed as the more talented of their allowed age group are called up to the B team but I could be completely wrong about this. However, there will be informed posters on CQN and elsewhere who have more reliable information and could inform us.

In the end, league position is not the target- these are development squads aiming to help players on their route to first team participation. Nobody but them and their families will take any note of their lower level medals. We have an artificial glass ceiling that only allows their participation in 5th tier football and will not allow them the facility that Barca B , Ajax B and other countries allow of 2nd tier competition.

Either we go the Red Bull or Man City group of having an arms length (corrupt?) relationship with a club in another country that allows our talented young players to be tested at a higher level, playing in a mix of mature journeymen and talented youngsters- Imagine Scott Brown and Chic Charnley types playing alongside a team with 6 or 7 youngsters.

If that is not allowed, then we are back to the current model of sending individuals out on loan to Scottish Championship or League One/Two in England and hoping their club is willing to give them game time.

  22. ah but , they are all in the glee club,

  24. SFTB @ 1.01

The facts are that our U18’s had a very poor season in 2021/22.

The B team that started last night had 5 2004’s in it plus a 2005 and a 2006.

The subs were a 2005 and two guys without profiles.

The bench had another 2 2005’s.

These are the facts that are available.

If the facts are not available then supposition is all that is left.

You are putting forward a very high bar for comment.

And you are applying it selectively — not good.

Plus your comments read like two posts cobbled together — even worse.

They would appear to be the core of last season’s U18 side.

If they are not then where is last season’s U18 side — sleeping with the football fishes?

As for the rest it is just excuses and happy clapping.

Your comments about CB’s are particularly cringeworthy.

The alternative response might be that the players themselves aren’t good enough.

Do you have any links / contacts / engagement with the St N’s based football academy.

I did until last year — so I have made comments based on actual experience.

The youths are failing badly and a huge improvement is required.

Luckily AP seems to agree and change would appear to be on the way.

To me we have the talent but the development has been very poor.

The attitudes that the St N’s Glee club generate being the most obvious point of failure.

Football is second to the company you keep — saw it in action.

Late developers are kept to the outside — why are so many desperate to leave?

As for the way forward — visibility is key.

U18’s and above — need to have public scrutiny.

Too many grow fat and happy in their own wee bubble.

Remember KD @ 17 had a season in the Juniors like many of his team-mates — with CU.

Better to play this standard alone or with a team around you?

I just got back from Ireland late last night so I need to exchange a few e mails with my money man (Celticrollercoaster) before I readvertise the payment details.

I will post later but my advice is that people enter the competition and we have time to collect the money later ( remember we will have some people participating just for fun and not for the prize money). We have 46 members already and we got 60 plus last season so I will be posting regularly over the next 3 days to generate more members. In order to join

    1) Go to Superbru.com

    2) enter for the SPFL football tournament

    —————————

No- these are not the only facts available. They are the facts you chose to base an inaccurate comment on.

More facts were available- You could easily see who had played last season. You could easily find out if the U-18s are operating with players who are younger than they need to be (if indeed they do). I , too, could find this out but I was not the one commenting upon their “poor” league performance- you were.

This is your responsibility- find out the facts and base your analysis on those.

Don’t start with armchair speculation and s=derive assertions based on an imagined unreality.

Don’t attribute other people’s contrary opinions as being due to their inferior jobs and experience compared to you!

These are choices that only you can make.

The certainty of opinion from a man who has not been to CP to see players in the flesh is, even if not invalid, certainly under informed. It deserves to be advanced with more trepidation and uncertainty than you choose to do.

The people who see Celtic regularly live are better informed than the average TV spectator. The guys who attend the reserve games are better informed than those who get their information from the gossip of schoolchildren.

I wish this would make an impact on your posting but I fear not.

It really isn’t a high bar.
