Exploiting the poppy

977

Who made the poppy a political symbol?  For those who collected the flower from fields in France 90 years ago and many bereaved relatives at home it was a symbol of respect for loved ones lost, but it can be used politically and has been shamelessly politicised in Scotland in recent years, where the symbol of national loss has been exploited.

In itself, the poppy is not political, it occupies the same territory as the black armband, but even this worldwide symbol of respect has been exploited for political ends by footballers in the past.

I can understand why many in England are furious that Fifa consider the poppy a political symbol and have banned England for wearing it against Spain this week, but since a few live to exploit the flower for political ends, the Fifa decision is correct.

Before making the decision someone at Fifa would have undertaken cursory research into the subject.  Searching Google for “poppy football” a few weeks ago would have returned this (now archived) result.  I’m sure you recall; a banner at Celtic Park, which didn’t make the news on the day it was displayed, or on the next day, was badgered by someone into the news on day three.  Celtic were the target of that exercise, the England team are now collateral damage.

Before I hit the sack, my amigo who is visiting is Italian, can’t get his head around people who are football supporters, he calls us locos for throwing our money away, the game is like my country he says, so corrupt you are all mad, tis his opinion and I tend to agree with him, he understands the passion but why do you all give your money to the people who hate you, sometimes it’s good to hear what others see it like it is.

    We have 2 choices…..

    1. We try and reform the system in scotland, and top of the list has to be fair refereeing, can’t see it as long as I live.

    2. We resign.

Number 2 for me, tis the only sure way we can get a level playing field, end off.

Or we can accept what has gone on before, bend over and accept what the sectarian scum throw at us……..

Choices, choices, what do you really want bhoys, are you willing to let your kids and grandkids suffer like we have, or do you want to stand up to them ?

Eric Bogle was a wonderful performer and songwriter.

Wilie Mc Bride and Waltzing Matilda always got most exposure and were magical songs.

But my favourite Bogle number? Esay that. “Now I’m easy”

  9. With regards to the announcment at Celtic park, I am sure we were drawing 1-1 with Tommy Coyne the scorer, game not going well. Tiger announced with some glee that the dons had scored at Pitoddrie, we all hung on a wee bit after the final whistle when tiger again confirmed with joy.

    Off now

I managed the Glasgow Catholic Primary schools team for 3 years. We were playing the non dom schools in the Scottish Cup when several people at the side started a rumour that Tam Burns had passed away. It was at the time when the press were highliting his illness.

I marched onto the park, when we were 3-0 up and stopped the game.

What a diddy I felt when it transpired that it was done on purpose.

  20. Kojo

With you 100% about building a winning team, but that takes many many like minded people to work together, not an easy thing to do, as I am sure you comprehend.

Big Jock is the first I can remember speaking out against the system, I am sure it was spoken about before, but I have no recollection so can’t say too much about them days.

He said that we have to play against 12 men, why should we have to play against 12 men, rather unfair if I may say, no mi amigo, we need a level playing field as that is how life should be.

Now we could talk till the cows come home about life and how life does not provide us with a level playing field, but we are talking about a pastime for the majority, sport, football fishing whatever, and all I and many like me ask is to have a platform where we all are level.

As for the hun, I want to see them gone, nothing less, never going to happen, but I can dream.

Not getting into the politics, but we will never be treated as equal in scotland, just my humble opinion, that’s what really makes me sad.

  21. Hope it’s not true about Tiger Tim.

His sackable offence, as I recall it, was committed at HT in a mid-week game in the late-80s or early 90s.

Rangers had played the night before and been knocked out of — or at least beaten in — European competition. As he was about to return to the tunnel, Tiger says “…and in case anyone missed it last night’s score at Ibrox (?) was….”. Cue cheers and laughter.

Sacked the next day by that miserable old board.
