Exploiting the poppy

977

Who made the poppy a political symbol?  For those who collected the flower from fields in France 90 years ago and many bereaved relatives at home it was a symbol of respect for loved ones lost, but it can be used politically and has been shamelessly politicised in Scotland in recent years, where the symbol of national loss has been exploited.

In itself, the poppy is not political, it occupies the same territory as the black armband, but even this worldwide symbol of respect has been exploited for political ends by footballers in the past.

I can understand why many in England are furious that Fifa consider the poppy a political symbol and have banned England for wearing it against Spain this week, but since a few live to exploit the flower for political ends, the Fifa decision is correct.

Before making the decision someone at Fifa would have undertaken cursory research into the subject.  Searching Google for “poppy football” a few weeks ago would have returned this (now archived) result.  I’m sure you recall; a banner at Celtic Park, which didn’t make the news on the day it was displayed, or on the next day, was badgered by someone into the news on day three.  Celtic were the target of that exercise, the England team are now collateral damage.

Anti-Football Bill being shepherded through Parliament by Anti-Catholic?

In a potentially explosive development, a former employee of Justice Committee Convenor, Christine Grahame MSP has accused her of holding anti-Catholic views. Mark Hirst who worked for Grahame for for two periods totalling 9 years and ending with his sacking in September for ‘gathering information without her consent’, has accused Grahame of holding deeply sectarian views in relation to Catholics as well as being racist and homophobic. He claims she has expressed these views in front of witnesses from as far back as 2001 and that this was well known inside her SNP branch.

Mr Hirst is currently assisting the Parliamentary Authorities and the Electoral Commission who are investigating Ms Grahame over allegations that her parliamentary and constituency office were operating in a corrupt manner with systematic malpractice taking place routinely.

In addition, he has made further allegations to the Scottish Public Standards Commissioner into a number of sectarian and racist comments Ms Grahame has made. He is also taking his case to an Employment Tribunal backed by his union.

Ms Grahame is accused by Hirst of comments about SNP colleagues who were known to be Catholics such as Michael Matheson, Roseanna Cunningham and Tricia Marwick. In the case of Marwick she made references to Marwick’s parliamentary activity as being ‘influenced and directed by the Church’. In relation to Matheson and Cunningham she accused them of being ‘as thick as thieves’ because they were ‘both Catholics you know’.

Hirst claims that Grahame opposed the re-entry of a former SNP Councillor, Murray Hendrie, who had defected to the Labour Party on the grounds that he was a Catholic and that this was discussed at the Tweedale branch of the SNP.

Hirst accuses Grahame of being influenced negatively in relation to a number of pieces of legislation by whatever position the Catholic Church took. In relation to Margo McDonald’s End of Life Bill she is said by Hirst to have been furious when Mike Rumbles suggested that an ad-hoc committee be set up to scrutinise the Bill and said, in front of witnesses: ‘It’s because he’s a f*cking Catholic’.

These and other allegations about Grahame are contained in a blog at http://holyroodconfessions.blogspot.com/ .

The Celtic Trust and other members of Fans Against Criminalisation will be raising these matters with MSPs as a matter of urgency. We have already highlighted Grahame’s comments, made during the evidence hearings of the Justice Committee, to the effect that the existing legislation does not convict Celtic supporters in equal numbers to Rangers supporters and inferred that this was somehow problematic and specifically ‘not even’. If these latest allegations are true then this renders Grahame not only unfit to be dealing with this Bill but potentially unfit to be an MSP.

We call on the SNP leadership to investigate these matters and issue a statement as to their veracity. We further call on them to halt the progress of this Bill with immediate effect as it is clearly now tainted with a strong whiff of anti-Catholicism.

i read a lot over the past threads about zonal/man marking at corner kicks..

as well as my charity football work here in Cambodia i also coach a professional team.

We are about to start preparations for next seasons competitions… ive been thinking long and hard about the zonal/man marking conundrum..

ive previously used one or the other and even tried both at once which involves some players marking zones and others marking the tallest and most dangerous opponents..

after much thinking i think for next year im going to try out a new system… it involves my players marking zonally but not in a static place..

it requires my players starting in a space closer to the goal and towards the back post, as the corner is played my zonal players move forward and attack the space in front of them allowing them a running jump into the spaces where attacking players will be running into. In this way it doesnt allow the normal advantage to forwards who are on the run and able to gain an advantage by having a running jump….

-i would also have someone marking the area towards the front post.

-also put 3 players high up the park so the opposition would need to keep 3 or 4 players back to defend.

    any thoughts/insight is appreciated…

Jimmybhoy – not sure about it myself (but what do I know)

Zonal marking seems to have too many grey areas for me. If one player is marking one player then everyone knows what there job is, no grey areas.

From corners, if I were coaching against you I would be delighted if you kept three players up front. The danger is prominent where the ball is and that is your own area. I would let you have numerical superiority up front whilst I enjoyed it back in your area, where the ball is going to be played.

    But then I’m not a coach……..

Good Morning to the Celtic Family from a dry sunny Central Scotland. Never mind the quality feel the width. This seems to be our new motto we all ready have bloated squad at Celtic Park which badly needs trimmed yet we look like signing another two players to add to it .Of course we the fans are paying the wages for this large squad while we call out for a couple of quality players to be added we continue to deal in dross Zenden looking to top up his pension pot,Blackman who if he doesnt sign has a trial lined up with Albion Rovers.Lack of ambition at Board level seems to be our problem.H.H.

I’m an old fashioned kinda duck. I like my players to be well behaved both on the pitch and off. Always happy to give a guy the benefit of the doubt, but if he has previous, the alarm bells start ringing.
