Exploiting the poppy

977

Who made the poppy a political symbol?  For those who collected the flower from fields in France 90 years ago and many bereaved relatives at home it was a symbol of respect for loved ones lost, but it can be used politically and has been shamelessly politicised in Scotland in recent years, where the symbol of national loss has been exploited.

In itself, the poppy is not political, it occupies the same territory as the black armband, but even this worldwide symbol of respect has been exploited for political ends by footballers in the past.

I can understand why many in England are furious that Fifa consider the poppy a political symbol and have banned England for wearing it against Spain this week, but since a few live to exploit the flower for political ends, the Fifa decision is correct.

Before making the decision someone at Fifa would have undertaken cursory research into the subject.  Searching Google for “poppy football” a few weeks ago would have returned this (now archived) result.  I’m sure you recall; a banner at Celtic Park, which didn’t make the news on the day it was displayed, or on the next day, was badgered by someone into the news on day three.  Celtic were the target of that exercise, the England team are now collateral damage.

Yip, unless further info comes to light this one will be filed under ‘Unsubstantiated allegations from ex-employee with a grudge’.

You only need to watch her in the interactions with Tom Devine.

Her obtuseness could only be down to either a blatant agenda, or at very best, total stupidity. She didn’t get where she is by being stupid.

jimmybhoycampbell. Football is still a game of eleven men versus eleven men my point with which you may not agree is that people try to make us think it is more difficult that it really is.Great maqnagers can see through the fog of tactics discussed by pundits and understand how to win games.Your point that with Jock Stein and the others is that was then and this is now things have changed. I have no arguement that things have changed but Stien,Busby,Shankly and Clough would if they were around today would still be top managers in my opinion.H.H.

    Interesting stats.

Backs up my long-held hunch that defenders (in any half-decent side) should have no qualms about giving away a corner. (Espcially when playing against the Hoops, with our own lamentable conversion rate.)

Indeed, a corner might be a better option than putting a ball out for a shy near the corner flag.

  8. Interesting to see what Christine Graeme is apparently really like; surely some awkward questions need to be asked? These allegations would certainly fit in with her “let’s even it up” agenda she let slip earlier

  9. If Salmond thinks Grahame has become a liability she’s toast.

He’s worked too hard and too long to court the Catholic vote for his efforts to be undermined by someone he has no great regard for.

I’m reminded though of Mike Russell have a falling out with the manager of his constituency office. Russell claimed he knew nothing of his employee’s blogging efforts. The employee, in effect, said Russell was lying. I know which of the two I believe. The employee was sacked and Russell moved onwards and upwards.

i agree with you that big Jock and the others you mentioned would still be top managers today.

Re pundits.. i dont take my lead from those guys..

I try to coach to improve my team and my players and look to formation changes and other changing tactical evolution/regression changes and try to use/tweek them as see fit.

I like tactics and love to see when they actually work in a game.

i am also in agreement that it is indeed a simple game but it still needs players who can understand ‘simple’ instruction :)

Dan – Tom Watson MP’s party seemed to be pretty happy cosying up to that “criminal enterprise” when the Murdoch Press was backing Labour. (thumbsup)

  15. Fortunes Favour Mibbes – I’m sure Christine Grahame isn’t stupid.

But you don’t need to be a genius to become an MSP. Just a brass neck and the ability to bite, scratch, and claw your way into a safe seat or a safe position on the regional list.

Raw animal cunning is more effective than intellect in Scottish politics. (thumbsup)

The Honest Mistake (Sickened) – Comments made in front of a number of witnesses is surely as damning as an email?

Maybe, if the claim can be substantiated.

However, it would take something more meaty than what she is alleged to have said to prove anti-Catholic malice, although I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the claims are true. (thumbsup)

Snake Plissken – Politics is a cutthroat business but you cannot have people making comments like that.

TBH I would rather sectarian bigots were a lot more open about their views. The sleekit ones are the most dangerous. (thumbsup)

those weak willed Libyans also seemd quite willing to cosy up to Gaddafi until recently as well.

The Murdoch press had the policy makers in their grip for far too long and the MPs deserve their chance to rectify the situation.

  20. tooheys new – You’re telling me Labour were in government for 13 years and were living in constant fear of doing anything about a “criminal enterprise” in case The Sun would write nasty articles about them?
