Exploiting the poppy

977

Who made the poppy a political symbol?  For those who collected the flower from fields in France 90 years ago and many bereaved relatives at home it was a symbol of respect for loved ones lost, but it can be used politically and has been shamelessly politicised in Scotland in recent years, where the symbol of national loss has been exploited.

In itself, the poppy is not political, it occupies the same territory as the black armband, but even this worldwide symbol of respect has been exploited for political ends by footballers in the past.

I can understand why many in England are furious that Fifa consider the poppy a political symbol and have banned England for wearing it against Spain this week, but since a few live to exploit the flower for political ends, the Fifa decision is correct.

Before making the decision someone at Fifa would have undertaken cursory research into the subject.  Searching Google for “poppy football” a few weeks ago would have returned this (now archived) result.  I’m sure you recall; a banner at Celtic Park, which didn’t make the news on the day it was displayed, or on the next day, was badgered by someone into the news on day three.  Celtic were the target of that exercise, the England team are now collateral damage.

I too was studying on the night of the 4-2 game- Clyde commentator was in fact Paul Cooney – he actually announced that there had been another goal and proceeded to plan an fn record before he said that it was Murdo who had scored for Celtic- I have met him since and told him exactly what I thought of that- I don’t recall the record cos I was on my knees praying that the goal was for Celtic!

Hope the story about Tiger tonight is unfounded- my wife knows him well and I was about to wake her to tell her the news- will hold fire just now.

Not sure but we launced the appeal with a donation of £10,000, way back on 24th October but that is now so long ago, to some/many it will be forgotten.

Fred C. Dobbs – that is what they do. 300 seats for ex-servicemen at a home game. Seats that would be empty anyway…..so costs them nothing.

You can also buy Rnagers tops with the poppy sewn into the top, £41.99 with a ‘percentage’ goin to charity.

A straight donation, amybe they do but I can’t find the details.

  10. I have been trying to write a response to the latest lengthy BBC response to our cup final Nevin:McLean complaint.

With the blog’s indulgence, I will leave 2 blocks of my reply on here as I know other posters have been doing a better job of this than me. I think someone already produced the text of the BBC letter on here.

As our complaints the grounds of Impartiality were “upheld”, albeit with caveats. I concentrated my reply on two areas, Accuracy and Bias. But firstly my general comments:-

    1) General

Many thanks for enclosing a full and, seemingly, comprehensive reply from Ms. O’Brien.

I believe she has made a reasonable job of dealing with a complex case but , it may not surprise you, to learn that I still have reservations on aspects of her conclusions.

Firstly, may I welcome the decision upholding the view that there are grounds to refer on for a decision on the issue of Impartiality. Having concluded so, however, I find it worrying and a little, disingenuous, that she hints these may not be upheld. I would have expected a little more rigour in concluding that grounds to refer on having been established, we should not receive an implication of “But don’t get your hopes up, it is likely to fail at that stage!” Why comment disapprovingly if she feels there is a case to answer?

    2) Accuracy

I am disappointed that our central assertion on “the means by which the message…..was reported to the production team and conveyed to the presenter and guests” is now deemed a BBC Exec Board Issue. Why was it not sent in that direction when the complaint is clearly central to our concerns? We still have not learned the nature of this transmission, by whom or by which body, but we are told that the route our complaint has taken is the wrong one. As I am on my 4th reply to unsatisfactory responses from the BBC, this is more than a little infuriating. I would ask that you ensure that the BBC Exec Board is directed to answer this query if it is indeed their remit.

Specifically, I want to know, who made the complaint and determined the Celtic support were engaged in ‘wrongful” singing? Under what pre-arranged guidance did they determine the song was “wrongful”? Were other agencies involved in influencing their view e.g. police or politicians? Finally, could they, the transmitter, have a biased view of what they considered offensive or sectarian?

Please confirm that this central question will be answered by the Exec. Board since it has not been satisfactorily answered as yet.

    3) Bias

I think you are overlooking a few other points. No attempt was made to report on the offensiveness or otherwise of what Motherwell fans were singing at the match. Does this indicate a possibility that BBC as an institution, as it exists currently in Scotland, is pre-disposed to see the issue of offensiveness and sectarianism as a problem confined to 2 Glasgow clubs and the west-central parts of our country? I have asserted in my complaint that it does and not only is this institutionally biased it is complacently prejudiced, lazy thinking and lazy journalism. It is no defence to state that it is a common or widespread view in Scotland. That the BBC reflects this common lazy prejudice is an indictment, in itself, of Institutional Bias.

Again, the second reference  to the BBC Exec Board being the correct source for dealing with this is disappointing. In making this complaint, I have been guided by you as to the routes to be taken and the appropriate people to be contacted. To be told, at this stage, that another part of the BBC should have had this addressed to them, merely re-inforces my view that the complaints procedure is designed to exhaust patience and discourage perseverance.

I trust that, if aspects of my complaint, conflated and shared as it is, needs to go to the Exec. Board, you will ensure that it goes there.

Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

Cue some random wee boy having the roving mike thrust under his nose. Tiger, mining no doubt for a rich seam of of child-like innocence and joy, promptly received the hard-nosed response: “UP THE RA!” Classic.

  17. Wear a poppy? Why? Why not? Why wear just one? I knew a man originally from Dublin but who settled just outside Belfast. He had served in the British army and was awarded the Star of Burma medal. I had a few conversations with Jack but the subject of poppies never arose. Most often he would tell me that Belfast folk commented on his Dublin accent. This did not overly worry him as he had a personal protection firearm which he carried at all times and which he showed to me on more occasion. One Saturday afternoon I was in a local shopping centre and in swept Jack. He had a poppy on each side of his hat, another on his raincoat which was open, one on the lapel of his ex serviceman’s blazer and yet another on his tie. I’m of the opinion they were freebies as Jack was parsimonious. It seemed that Jack had a new lease of life when November beckoned.

Later that night he was asked by the doorman to remove the said objects as he tried to gain entrance to a local pub.

“It’s for your own safety,” he was told. The irony!

Always been slightly agog at the fact that gun ownership is widespread in the six northern counties. I’ve read that:

Over 100,000 people are legal gun owners, and that

It’s perfectly legal for them to walk the streets with their firearm in plain view, and that

the PSNI issue these ownership certificates to people whose lives may be imperilled by gunfire.

Taking all that into consideration, may I ask, have therefore, Messrs Adams and McGuinness been licensed gun-owners for some years?

Or are the 100,000 legal firearm owners all to be found within the Ascendancy and its’ servants, the state and its’ office-holders…?

    It’s a genuine question.

Not to start trawling over old ground on the Poppy debate however I wish to get something off my chest….I have no problem with someone honouring there dead each to the own, I have no problem with people commerating the people who died in the 2 world wars…..My problem with the Poppy is that it commerates ALL British service men and woman which if you consider yourself British is fine…however as an Irish Republician I do have a problem with for obvious reasons….How many other ‘Allied countries’ wear the Poppy & recignise it solely as a rememberance for the 2 world wars….Answer is none….The Majority of other european countries commemerate it with a service Y can’t the British goverment do the same when it comes to commemerating the 2 world wars…GRMA

  23. …and i suppose the best thing about having a big kerfuffle over whether england can wear a poppy or not is that it distracts everyone from what the england captain may or may not have said to anton ferdinand…

    Superb!

Reminds me of Andy Cameron’s Saturday morning radio show for kids. I’m sure it was Radio Scotland. He played birthday requests and such like, and his show also featured a slot where kids could phone in and tell a joke over the air. All went well until one day a young lad – let’s call him wee Johnny – phoned with his favourite joke.

“Whit vegetable brings tears tae yer eyes?”

“The obvious answer would be an onion,” said Andy.

    “Naw. A melon.”

“A melon? How does a melon bring tears to your eyes?”

“You’ve never hud a melon drapped oan yer baws huv ye?”
