Johanssen was superb last season. I don’t think Ronnie has improved him.. Or Craig Gordon… Or Armstrong .. Or GMS…… Or guys he would rather not play like Commons… Despite the fact that Commons and Griffiths have saved his skin. The Recent additions however Cole and Ciftci give even greater cause for concern imo….

They are out there though.
I recall the baldy guy who played for quarabag .. I appreciate he is Brazilian, and that presents challenges when trying to sign.
But throughout Europe, there are technically gifted , playmakers. Playing for Belgian teams, Austrian teams, Swiss teams, Czech teams etc.
Johansen is a mystery to me… Last season he was full of energy, full of running, popped up with vital goals in big games. Scored 13/14 goals through the season.
This season… The guy runs as if in reverse, and finds a Celtic jersey with roughly 5% of his attempted passes.
Oh well. That’s Europe over with.

The worry about Ciftci is that he is less then 6 months into a 4yr contract. He will be hard to offload, only avenue open is to loan him out where he will get games. He might do OK somewhere else and at least he will be in the shop window, Stokes should be easy to offload, Blackett is a loanee, no problem there. I think Derk has 18 painful months left, best hope is to do a deal & pay him off.
Lurkin … the problem is I travel with my own doctor (the better half) … and its her work party ….so if I misbehaved, KT would make sure I needed a doctor for sure! :)

Mike, we went from 79/80 season to the 01/02 not playing in Uefa competion after December each season. The Seville run was the first time in 22 years we achieved the above.
Our issues with european performances and results seem to have been magnified more than previously probably due to the now defunct club defuncting themselves . ( i couldn’t think of another word to use than the made updefuncting).
Martin gave us great European nights but these were mainly at home, obviously Amsterdam, Blackburn, Liverpool and Boavista away rank highly , but our best team in the the last 35 years, had some awful european performances with the Porto away game being a real sore one.
We regained some of our previous prestige with our home European record under Martin but over the last three seasons , we are now losing what prestige we had rebuilt.
We are praised for our support and stadium but my preference is we are being praised in Europe for our team first . We have a long way to go for that to happen.
We desperately need a proper goalscorer. Nadir certainly ain’t it.
However, our European campaign came to a halt because of our defensive frailties.
Re: our style – sideways and back passes to retain possession are fine if the ultimate purpose is to regroup and build an attack. But our approach to it often seems purposeless. Not sure what we’re trying to achieve with that. Looks like the players are unsure too?

Stefan Johansen actually started the season ok, scored 3 and had a few assists, downhill from there though :o)

I’ve no doubt they’re there….unfortunately in this day & age it seems that the top clubs in Europe are buying all the good young players with no intention of giving them a chance of first team football….they just want to stifle all competition ;-((
Mibbe if there was a limit to squad sizes team could have, it would help

Heraghty’s bar had lisbon 20 th annivesary night. Big Billy was there along with some other ex players from the sixties. McNee appeared about half an hour later ,when Billy saw him ,he left straight away. I got the impression Billy had very little time for the voice of football.
I had a wee look at news now earlier, the Bolton windingup order is right up the SMSM street, it gives them a chance to associate Neil with Bolton’s long running financial msery.
The Scotsman has an online article with a picture of Neil at the top and guess what, its a photo of him from his time as our manager.
The online daily record headline has ex celtic and Neil Lennon before the word bolton is used in it.
