Final day to appeal Lord Glennie decision set to expire

1163

Charles Green, like Whyte and Duff & Phelps before him, is asking for admittance to the SPL on the basis that Rangers FC is a distinct entity from its legal identity.  While this theory has been strongly advocated by SPL chief executive, Neil Doncaster, by necessity, if you claim the football benefits of being ‘Rangers’, specifically player registrations, you also inherit Rangers penalties.

Although Rangers clearly won their challenge to Lord Carloway’s 12-month ban on player registration at the Court of Session last month when Lord Glennie referred the matter back to the SFA Appellate Panel, as the full ramification of the decision became clear to Green, who then had an irrevocable contract to buy Rangers or its assets, he floated the idea that he might appeal.

The SFA, correctly, decided not to instruct the Appellate Panel until the 21 day period when an appeal can be raised, which elapses today, has passed, just in case Green tells Lord Glennie he’s got it all wrong.

All this has been terribly confusing, not to mention expensive, for Scottish football, but with yesterday’s news that Rangers have a prima facie case to answer for subverting Scottish football for over a decade, the obstacles before Green are clearly insurmountable.  There is reason to believe we can quickly reach some clarity.

The SFA must, without delay, convene the Appellate Panel to consider Lord Glennie’s instructions and apply an appropriate penalty on the various legal and ethereal bodies which claim to be ‘Rangers’.  If the Appellate Panel suspend or expel what is left of the football club from the SFA, as must surely be expected, all questions about fan pressure, morals and votes become moot.

In this case, history will record the folly of Green’s appeal to civil law as the act which finally killed off any chance of ‘Rangers’ surviving, conveniently letting the SPL off the hook, while Green would be obliged to dispose of the stadium for a modest return to those capable of forming a genuinely new football club at some point in the future.

On reading the Guardian today, my attention was caught by an article on Niall Ferguson who is now embarking on the Reith Lectures on Radio 4. Ferguson will be known to us as a “television historian” who has a tendency towards revisionism, i.e. not following the accepted wisdom in matters historical.

The part of the article which jumped out at me is as follows:

“One acquaintance emphasises the degree to which Ferguson’s politics is shaped by his upbringing. “The key thing to understand with Ferguson is the degree to which he’s a rightwing, Glasgow Rangers-supporting, Protestant anti-socialist.”

On one occasion, the acquaintance recalled: “Niall was very worried about how his Rangers-supporting grandmother was going to react to an Indian friend. As the friend left, his granny said: “She was very nice – at least she’s not a Catholic’.”

Well, Niall, I am sure you are already working on the history of your former club. It will be interesting to see how far you can revise its history. There certainly is a heck of a lot to revise.

  8. Lots of speculation about why the cardigan walked away.

However it might be a bit more simpler and linked to the above article and the latest news.

    1. If the appeal period has lapsed then presumably the case will go back to the AT for a ruling. Perhaps the cardies have wind that the outcome will be suspension for 12 months. (However no sure how this applies to servco ’88)

    2. BDO saying that the name ‘Rangers Football Club’ is still with the dodo rangers and will probably take about a year to wind things up so not available to anyone if ever until then.

    3. Or/and they know that all the players can walk for free.

So no football for 12 months because of suspension and anyway if they did get a team up and going no use of the ‘Rangers’ name for any team until then. So lets let Charlie and the boys in his consortium take all the flak over failed applications to SPL.(Remember they have just submitted an application but with none of the supporting documents presumably 3 years accounts).

Seriously, it is rather depressing that Ferguson gets so much coverage. I have little doubt he is a brilliant historian – Antony Beevor speaks highly of him. However, someone somewhere really wants his version of history to prevail. I will not be listening to him given your review of today’s edition.

I hate to say this but the proposed actions of the the Celtic Supporters Association are a complete mistake. To propose a bhoycott, before the SPL clubs have even had a chance to vote on the status of the New Club cannot be right, indeed it has more than a hint of the Sandy Jardines about it. It will be seen, by some, as the actions of one half of the Old Firm, threatening non Old Firm clubs. We need Celtic to vote against the transfer, that is our club. Let us hope that happens before we start threatening anybody else!

craig burley is a master tactician who has an unparalled knowledge of soccerball in all it’s many shapes and sizes. after an outstanding career on the pitch, he declined many job offers from major football clubs, despite the fact that he was to be given a free hand in all things soccer.

He preferred the oppurtunity to share his incisive analysis of the international and domestic game with the ignorant suckers who pay way too much for subscriber only telly, Craig never tires of informing viewers as to just how p1sh the Scottish game is.

Craig also writes a weekly column in a down-market sunday paper about how he can’t stand Neil Lennon.
