Fitness gambles can backfire

734

News that Kris Commons had surgery yesterday on a back injury he’s been carrying for months was news to me. Injury and illness hampered Kris at various stages this (last?) season but when he reported back ‘fit’ his form didn’t hit previous heights. Now we know why.

Commons, Scott Brown and Mikael Lustig played through injury for large portions of the season. They are big players for Celtic and the story of our season can be seen through the prism of their situations. Jozo Simunovic was also less than 100% fit for what little we saw of him.

Correctly diagnosing the fitness of each of them will be important to Celtic’s performance next season. If we think Jozo and Scott will be capable of performing at Champions League level and they’re not, you could write the script on how next season will transpire.

The new manager will take a look at Kris’s age, vitals and recent injury record, and will immediately underestimate what he’s likely to get from the player next season. No new manager will rely on having a fit and able Kris Commons, but if fit, he’ll get a player with the craft to help him in Europe and domestically.

Mikael’s persistent hip injuries suggest we need to recruit a right back. There’s insufficient evidence to determine whether Saidy Janko is ready for the task, so we need to find someone who can take the pressure off Mikael’s hips.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the newspaper advertisement about Resolution 12, which will run in The Guardian and a Swiss business ‘paper.  It’s been a remarkable project. You can read more information here.

Despite the self portrait. Despite the dodgy whiter than white teeth. Despite “the guys in this envelope” patter.

If true ( don’t trust Sky ) then the appointment will be an interesting development.

Will Brendan have majority say on signing players or will he be happy to share the burden ?

    I’d think the former.

A Celtic supporter, with experience and a career to rebuild.

If true , I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

    Don’t hold yer breath CSC.

    Corkcelt,

Monday the 16th was St Brendan’s Feast Day. Maybe it’s written…From Celtic mythology about the origins of St Brendan, a Munsterman.

    “Brendan son of fair Findlugh,

    And Mochuda pon of Findall,

A holy pair with penitential looks,

Of the race of Ciar, son of Fergus.”

  3. I believe Brendan is a strong character so if any players step out of line they could be subjected to a severe rodgering.

    Or maybe not.

I’d hoped the manager was already in place. Timescale for qualifiers is short and so precious. If we are still interviewing, the new man won’t have much time to assess and change things.

The Daily Record understands that Brendan Rodgers has a release clause entitling him to join any other con from England’s rich leagues should he win his first game in charge … And and and if he loses it he will get paid off with a cool 60 million.

Radio off, I have no idea why people would give those guys their time. Down talking us at every turn, So biased that its not even a talk show. bfdj constantly bullies his opinions over everyone else in the studio. Moron. Hollow vessel and all that.

Wouldn’t ask his advice for a 3 in 1 never mind anything Celtic related. You still get Celtic fans phoning in expecting to be heard and expecting to have a decent conversation with a so call expert.

  15. Played golf with a director of an SPFL club today. He asked me if I was renewing my ST.

When I told him I was undecided, he enquired why.

I explained that it was nothing to do with Ronny or the team being poor, as the MSM would have one believe, it was others matters that concerned me.

He enquired further so I mentioned same club myth, Resolution 12, new manager, SFA corruption and our board’s reluctance to address it.

He advised to forget the same club myth, accept it.

He asked what Res 12 was, then when explained, advised to forget it, let it go, there will be no movement on Res 12. Forget it, move on, look to the future.

He didn’t have anything to say on SFA corruption and claimed to have never heard of the Offshore Game fellows.

He reckons everything will be better next year with them in the SPFL, even if it meant his club would have less chance of gaining a top six position.

If this gentleman, ( and very nice guy he is too), is representative of the views of SPFL clubs’ directors then we may be onto plums!

Truth and transparency not on the agenda at any time soon.

If it’s Brendan, go get Ashley Williams.

That’s who he wanted to sign to sort out Liverpool defence but the transfer committee gave him Sakho.

Too true. The more Celtic supporters tune in and even worse phone in it gives these muppets credibility and allows the radio station concerned to claim a higher listening audience and thereby achieved a higher rate of advertising.

I believe that many in Britain during WW2 also lightened into Nordedeutsland Rundefunfunk and a certain Mr. Joyce. Strange, IMO. HH

Salary is biggest hurdle #Celtic must overcome to lure Rodgers to Parkhead. But if board can do that it will be a huge statement of intent.

  22. Look every purchase be it player or Manager is a punt and we won’t know until next year how good or bad the punt was.

All you can do is pick the guy who on past performance is most likely to deliver. I think Rodgers does tick most of the boxes. He won’t be a Patsy to Lawell, he will command respect from players, he will know what Celtic is all about, he has an impressive C.V. and has managed at top level.

You would expect him to have no fear of anyone or any team in Scotland.

I was very much underwhelmed by Ronny’s appointment but am genuinely excited about the prospect of Rodgers coming in.
