Fitness gambles can backfire

734

News that Kris Commons had surgery yesterday on a back injury he’s been carrying for months was news to me. Injury and illness hampered Kris at various stages this (last?) season but when he reported back ‘fit’ his form didn’t hit previous heights. Now we know why.

Commons, Scott Brown and Mikael Lustig played through injury for large portions of the season. They are big players for Celtic and the story of our season can be seen through the prism of their situations. Jozo Simunovic was also less than 100% fit for what little we saw of him.

Correctly diagnosing the fitness of each of them will be important to Celtic’s performance next season. If we think Jozo and Scott will be capable of performing at Champions League level and they’re not, you could write the script on how next season will transpire.

The new manager will take a look at Kris’s age, vitals and recent injury record, and will immediately underestimate what he’s likely to get from the player next season. No new manager will rely on having a fit and able Kris Commons, but if fit, he’ll get a player with the craft to help him in Europe and domestically.

Mikael’s persistent hip injuries suggest we need to recruit a right back. There’s insufficient evidence to determine whether Saidy Janko is ready for the task, so we need to find someone who can take the pressure off Mikael’s hips.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the newspaper advertisement about Resolution 12, which will run in The Guardian and a Swiss business ‘paper.  It’s been a remarkable project. You can read more information here.

I went to bed last night feeling very optimistic that Brendan Rogers would be appointed manager but I’m feeling deflated now after that statement by the Club. I’d go as far as saying that Brendan Rogers can now be discounted. He will not be appointed manager. It does begin to look like they’re flashing big names in front of us but will come up with somebody totally underwhelming. I think it is a stunt to lull us into buying season tickets. Celtic will not see a penny from me until a manager has been appointed.

Keep your money in your pockets, folks is what I would advise.

The reason I don’t want a Scottish manager is the same reason I don’t want an Irish one either. Imo, they are mired in the past. Football has moved on and if we want to progress, we should be looking to bring in someone from Europe. Imo, preferably a Spaniard or German.

Sky say Rodgers is in for 2nd interview and he’s no 1 choice.

Celtic say naebdys the preference and we’re still looking.

Sounds like a ploy to sell season books right enough.

PARKHEADCUMSALFORD. Fair enough fella you have a point but as I understand it we are only looking at UK managers but Celtic are practiced at laying smoke screens so you never know. H.H.

THEORIGINALSADIESBHOY. Fella im not trying to lower anyones expectations but think back Celtic have previous history of useing big names to cover the truth they did it when they appointed Ronny. All I am saying is there is interest in Peter Houston he is well known by PL and is well thought of he has done ok in his managerial career. He knows the Celtic squad and fits in our budget I have no idea who will or will not get the job but I do believe Peter Houston is a candidate. H.H.

    ……………………………

I’m not doubting what you say about Houston being a candidate and I’m well aware of the strategy of leaking that they are in talks with big names before coming up with a Mowbray or Ronny but, on this occasion, in my opinion, they would be seriously miscalculating the mindset of the Celtic support. As Bada said above, mthey can lock the gates on the way out because there won’t be many fans turning up next season.

Remind me how Peter Houston has performed in Europe recently. Before anyone comes back at me about WGS never having managed in Europe, he played in Europe often enough and played International football so at least knew about the level of difficulty and what it takes to survive/succeed in Europe.

Reading that, you started out as a fan of the strategy.

Reading further, you realised that it failed.

Why then,is it still in place?
