Fitness gambles can backfire

734

News that Kris Commons had surgery yesterday on a back injury he’s been carrying for months was news to me. Injury and illness hampered Kris at various stages this (last?) season but when he reported back ‘fit’ his form didn’t hit previous heights. Now we know why.

Commons, Scott Brown and Mikael Lustig played through injury for large portions of the season. They are big players for Celtic and the story of our season can be seen through the prism of their situations. Jozo Simunovic was also less than 100% fit for what little we saw of him.

Correctly diagnosing the fitness of each of them will be important to Celtic’s performance next season. If we think Jozo and Scott will be capable of performing at Champions League level and they’re not, you could write the script on how next season will transpire.

The new manager will take a look at Kris’s age, vitals and recent injury record, and will immediately underestimate what he’s likely to get from the player next season. No new manager will rely on having a fit and able Kris Commons, but if fit, he’ll get a player with the craft to help him in Europe and domestically.

Mikael’s persistent hip injuries suggest we need to recruit a right back. There’s insufficient evidence to determine whether Saidy Janko is ready for the task, so we need to find someone who can take the pressure off Mikael’s hips.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the newspaper advertisement about Resolution 12, which will run in The Guardian and a Swiss business ‘paper.  It’s been a remarkable project. You can read more information here.

any of the above would get us into the CL group stages with the players who are already at the club, plus they’d likely win a treble and treat us to some brilliant hunskelpings along the way….imho.

Ye see, the focus should be on…….

Can the manager – actually manage – the players at his disposal ?

Not putting the focus on, how many £millions we can pay him or, how many £millions he can spend.

And,…..crucially…….a manager has to be ‘cynical’ if necessary not, never, be consumed by this Celtic mindset-trap about, playing the Celtic Way – bollocks!!!!!!

Mr Stein’s teams didny play the Celtic way all the time ffs!

Would MO’N have been able to put out Barcelona in 2004 if, he played the Celtic way in the Nou Camp ?

Would Neil Lennon’s team have beaten Barcelona, playing the Celtic way ?

Tommy Burns(RIP)’s Celtic teams played the Celtic way and, got mugged 12 times out of 14 v the huns!

    Fluk that!

Horses for courses is ‘thee’ way!!!!!

No enough green & white hooped bushy tails swinging aboot these days, eh ?

    …….oot……..

  2. I don’t trust PL. I never have. He cost us £10m on Bobo alone. As far as I’m concerned he is not a force for good. He is pennywise and pound foolish, which is the point I was making, and he has been proven to be.

As for the insinuations in your post about me,wee word of advice. My hun pals can call me a Fenian if they like,I give it back in gobfulls.

No-one at all is allowed to call me a hun. Be careful wi that.

Of course you’ve got proof on the Bobo allegations?

Never called Yi a Hun, called you a level 5 helper, if it hit a nerve good, and that was me being carefull.

  3. Whats this,a feel good factor among the fans ?.We will soon put a stop to this.Get a press release out there quick.Get one of those guys from Level 5 to word it,they seem a good PR company.WEe cant have fans having expectations.Good God where would it end?.

For me the situation is as follows:-

Appoint a manager of the standing of Brendan Rogers, Davie Moyes or a successful European manager like Flores and I immediately renew my Season Ticket.

Appoint Peter Houston or someone similar and I never go back again.

We need to get this appointment right this time. The establishment will be right behind the Huns next season. Our catastrophic performances in Europe last season cannot be repeated this season or we will slip away forever.

We cannot afford a repetition of last season’s performances either domestically or in Europe. If Peter Lawwell wants to insult us with someone like Peter Houston then he’ll mend him.

Now I’m not saying he was never at anytime frozen out but as has been mentioned his replacements got us to the last 16 twice in a row.

I hope your info is wrong. This would be a mistake. We saddled Ronny with an Assistant Manager not of his own choosing. It would be mistake to repeat that. Martin O’Neill brought his own team as did Gordon Strachan. Lenny chose Mjallby and Thomson. Why change a successful model?

  17. Joe Filippis Haircut on

THEORIGINALSADIESBHOY. Fella im not trying to lower anyones expectations but think back Celtic have previous history of useing big names to cover the truth they did it when they appointed Ronny. All I am saying is there is interest in Peter Houston he is well known by PL and is well thought of he has done ok in his managerial career. He knows the Celtic squad and fits in our budget I have no idea who will or will not get the job but I do believe Peter Houston is a candidate. H.H.

  21. The circulation of the Rodgers story is all about, the Celtic hierarchy having they’re erses felt re: Season Ticket Renewals.

Don’t renew until all is laid bare about how complicit or, otherwise the Celtic PLC-Hierarchy have been during all the hun cheating fiasco.

It seems that, showing that you’ll no longer be a mug is having an affect….imho.

Aye get to the oub ye oul’ soorpuss :-)

PL is a genial guy and a good tim.

He has simply lost his way as CEO. A very strong beginning and a decent safe pair of hands during the credit crises. His fiscal attributes stood him and us in good stead.

However, as a CEO he is required to have vision, innovation and the energy to sell his ideas and the tenacity to see them completed through others…

That’s where is all goes a bit tits up!

An old boss told me that the CEO must bank a few $$$ in the ‘trust account’ by drving towards an objective and over delivering. It can be argued he achieved that in the early days. The shareholders/stakeholders give a pass on failed tactics a la Bobo and even the ‘Willo Window’.

That was all a long time ago and there have been too many cock ups and not enough vision & innovation, nevermind execution and delivery.

The ‘trust account’ is now in deficit.

PL is 3 to 5 years past his sell by date. It’s time for a new hand on the big tiller.

If he went now he would go with the blessing of the vast majority and lots of goodwill. Going might mean one of those megabucks contracts he was waxing on about ( poor show…) or, remaining at the club in sime capacity to help clean up the new SFA. One of my wee theories is that the unopposed Ogilvie vote was in return for a promise of a CFC slot in the medium term – maybe the one after next?

    That’s how it’s done. Not saying I agree…

Why are some of you bhoys ruling out Scottish managers going by your way of thinking we would never have hired big Jock Stein ? I think you are beginning to believe the EPL hype but managing in the EPL is a big money game that is not the case in Scotland. We have to live within our means and im sure managers such as Houston Hughes Mc Intyre have shown themselves capable of building good teams with very little money.H.H.

But for me the next appointment is uber crucial and whilst it doesn’t have to to extreme box office, it does have to be someone a little bit special.

  31. The Celtic have not used the process of seeking a new manager to get get publicity, if anything they have been overly secretive IMHO

  32. I went to see Celtic when the Kellys and Whites were there when Jimmy McGrory was manager when Stein was manager when Sean Fallon took over for a year when Billy was manager when David Hay was manager when Lou Macari came and went Barnes, Dalglish, Liam Brady, Tommy Burns, Mowbray Lennon Delia, hundreds, maybe thousands :), of different players, why would I wait to see who was the next manager before deciding if I go. The reason I go is to see Celtic, doesn’t matter who the directors are or the manager or the ball boys por cierto.
