Fitness gambles can backfire

734

News that Kris Commons had surgery yesterday on a back injury he’s been carrying for months was news to me. Injury and illness hampered Kris at various stages this (last?) season but when he reported back ‘fit’ his form didn’t hit previous heights. Now we know why.

Commons, Scott Brown and Mikael Lustig played through injury for large portions of the season. They are big players for Celtic and the story of our season can be seen through the prism of their situations. Jozo Simunovic was also less than 100% fit for what little we saw of him.

Correctly diagnosing the fitness of each of them will be important to Celtic’s performance next season. If we think Jozo and Scott will be capable of performing at Champions League level and they’re not, you could write the script on how next season will transpire.

The new manager will take a look at Kris’s age, vitals and recent injury record, and will immediately underestimate what he’s likely to get from the player next season. No new manager will rely on having a fit and able Kris Commons, but if fit, he’ll get a player with the craft to help him in Europe and domestically.

Mikael’s persistent hip injuries suggest we need to recruit a right back. There’s insufficient evidence to determine whether Saidy Janko is ready for the task, so we need to find someone who can take the pressure off Mikael’s hips.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the newspaper advertisement about Resolution 12, which will run in The Guardian and a Swiss business ‘paper.  It’s been a remarkable project. You can read more information here.

“Can you think of a compromise that Labour and Tory would be party to, to save SNPs face? ”

I can think they may be forced to leave the online section of the Bill intact in order to get rid of the rest. Their motivation in compromising would be to get rid of the worst of the Bill. It is the SNP who will insist on a compromise short of total defeat of the Act in order to save their face.

You can let us know nearer the time if you are persuaded to be a Unionist re the EU. That jibe was freely handed out to many of us a few years ago. Now, it will fit every SNP backer with the exception of Jim Sillars.

Hannan chooses to forget his roots. Have we heard that before?

*his mother who is Mrs. TT’s 2nd cousin taught one of my weans at St Kessog’s prior to us emigrating.

His da used tae help run OL&SM boys guild. Both his parents worked about the church.

Sad if he has forgotten his roots as us St Mary’s bhoys all stuck the gether, must be living through in Embra that’s turned his heid.

Good luck with yer treatment BTW.

EDB – Hope that you’re well Sir ? Like many others before I was shocked to read of your recent news and can only hope that you’re managing to ” keep the faith” as best as possible with such a weight to bear – don’t know what else to say ! Re Martin Hannah – your spot on re ” his roots” and perhaps forgetting same ! I’m pretty sure that he was away for a few years with my uncle at a seminary when in their mid/ late teens – can’t remember it’s name – but needless to say that they both decided against the vocation…….or maybe the vocation decided against them. I also recall delivering the Sunday newspapers to the Hannah family home ( Dalmonach Road, Bonhill ) and “old” Mr Hannah ( Jim ) – RIP. Mr H was a regular choir member at Our Lady & St Marks ( Alexandria ) but don’t have much recollection of him being a “mad Celtic man”

*his mother was a Caulfield, that well know benevolent Vale family. Old Paddy bought the land fae the Balloch Hotel where St Kessog’s now sits as the bassas refused tae sell it tae the archdiocese, he then gave it tae us.

Love to see Brendan at Celtic Park. Gets his team’s playing attacking football. Will put the monkeys on the back foot from the off.

  8. Seen few people mention moving bitton on.. There is at least half a dozen players id get rid of before him.

Not his biggest fan especially after the semi final but in Europe he could turn out to be very useful.

  9. proudbhoy on 17th May 2016 11:19 pm

Bittons disgraceful performance in one of our most appalling and shameful exhibitions at hampdump 4 weeks ago, led me to believe his strategy was to deliberately shame our then Manager and get him sacked. I will never forget his ‘performance ‘ that day, Never.

Or maybe it was the fault of our departed coach.

  11. BABASONICOS71 on

I think Biton has the talent to be a very good player at a high level but believe his game is more suited to a slower, less frenetic style that we get here.Spain or France would be ideal for him.

Agree there’s more ahead of him in the out queue but after his semi-final shenanigans i’m no longer a fan.

And we’re well covered in that area.

EDB: Best of luck with the chemo when it starts. I will ‘ be doin a wee caunel for my grandaughter who is sitting a very important exam tomorrow ‘ and wil add one and a prayer for your good self. The Big Man sits up when he gets a message from Kilwinning!!! KTF.

Sorry Mhate.. Unless our Manager told him to hide, feign injury, give less than 50%.. Unless our Manager instructed him to give up, lack fight, lack passion, lack effort, don’t try, constantly look to the bench to be sub’d, then I;m afraid, in my opinion.. He cheated us, his Manager, his team mates and, for what its worth, himself.

  14. EDB – we had some dialogue re our shared experiences of Bonhill a few years back – pretty sure that you indicated that you knew my Dad ( Charlie ) who passed in 2003 ! I lived in Hillbank Street from 1970 – 1985 – pretty sure you’ll know or will remember us as kids – I probably delivered your Sunday papers also…….

My Dad enjoyed a pint in The Black Bull and knew Evan ( Williams ) pretty well – done a bit of work for him…..but I’m sure that you’ll know that and might recall our earlier exchanges re same – you knew him ( my Dad )

TT : Knew the Caulfield family also Sir and can vividly remember delivering papers into their family home each Sunday ( just behind the old car repair workshop at bottom of Dalmonach Road, and over-looking the “Dummy Stairs” which lead down to the Vale Bridge ( + Gerry Notini’s chipper ) I was in same class throughout primary – St Mary’s – with his son, Marco !

As we’ve said before – GOOD memories

Must be loads more subtle connections or aquaintainces that we collectively have awareness of or share !

Ps : EDB – if you were married in Our Lady & St Marks there’s a more than decent chance that I might have had the honour of serving at the mass as along with the Flood Brothers and The McGunnigle’s, my own brother and I cleared up at all the “gigs” in town – with the help of Father Reilly, Father McGhee, Father Maguire and Father Docherty of course……….

    Hail……Hail…….

    A player feeds off passion.

Deila displayed none . And if he did he didn`t transmit it to the players.

    Bitton was a great player.

    He may well be again.

We shall see , unless he hits the road .

  16. macjay1 for Neil Lennon on 17th May 2016 11:43 pm

I hope so Mhate.. I do.. I love my Team, and desperately want us to be successful with great players, proud and not just there for the money. Bitton for me last year was our lynchpin, I thought he was the player that would make us great. But there were times were he was absolutely pathetic.. that’s down to him.. as a player, as a professional and as a man. Who ever his Manager is, as with ALL players, thy should be giving 100%.. Bitton let me downat times this season. I hope that who ever comes in gets him motivated and back to being the £10,000,000 player people say he is !!

    Hail Hail.. K T F, COYBIG.

  17. I think Bitton is a class act and feel that he just needs the correct guidance to develop. Conspiracy theories are far fetched and dangerous but it is all about opinions I suppose.

  18. Andyr53

Can’t argue against that , his performance in semi final sickened me.. But I would allow him another chance.

But I wouldn’t be too upset if we got good fee for him.

  19. No White Smoke?

So Brendan, David, AVB, Malky or hem, sumbdy.

First three I’d be happy with.

Someone else, still might be happy, ah but, who knows.

Wee Dena, you and yours in my thoughts.

  20. proudbhoy on 17th May 2016 11:58 pm

Yea.. Lets see what our new Manager can do with whats there at present.. Yes, there are players who will move on, either cos we have no place for them, they are not good enough, or they want to go for personal reasons.. BUT, after Sunday, Boy do we have a great nucleus of a Team !!

Encourage them, improve them and perhaps add 1 or 2 established quality individuals who can take them onto the next level.

C’mon the Hoops, we just need the right direction and guidance.

  21. garygillespieshamstring on

Was that a joke about the guy saying there had been a reduction in chanting about the disabled at matches.

In 50 years of watching celtic, I don’t think I’ve ever heard any.

  22. Bitton felt his hamstring (perhaps tighten) signalled to the bench he was struggling & should come off (to protect an injury with a title to win). Realised we had already made three subs & played on. I don’t get the vitriol aimed at him in this instance? Yes he had a poor game & deserves criticism but he was far from alone that day. You could pick almost anyone from 1 to 11, almost all of them were not at the races for large spells of the semi.

By all means criticise players for not performing to their abilities but don’t make up nonsense in doing so.

  23. ANDYR53 on 18TH MAY 2016 12:05 AM

We have some good young talent, just hope they get a chance.. We should have been giving games to more young players these past few seasons than we have.

  24. ELLBOY on 18TH MAY 2016 12:32 AM

It is possible he played through the pain barrier to finish the game for us but in my opinion the fact he lined up for a free kick shot after feeling a tight hamstring tells me he MAY have been faking it to get off the pitch and when he realised it wasn’t happening he went about his normal game.

Just my opinion. And your right our whole team apart from Erik and tierney were awful that day. Still annoying me greatly. Worst performance Iv seen in long time from us.

Same page with all of that , Andy.

  26. There are some players in our squad who i think are terrible.

The majority of the squad is good to excellent.

Would hope they are all given an honest and equal chance under our new coach.

Do not think a radical overhaul is needed but we are weak in some areas despite a large pool of players.

Balance is needed and hopefully the new coach will be recruited with the footballing side as the criteria and priority.

Hate the speculation and waiting as recent history tends to suggest we will be underwhelmed by new appointment.

Also we are not that far from next season beginning so the sooner coach is appointed the more time he has for preperation.

  27. roDgers

    Bhoys

I must insist on RODGERS with a D, should Brendan get the gig.

You see me and Brendan share the same surname, and it bugs me when folks miss the D oot!

Folks who work with me have, for a long number of years, been very careful not to spell my name incorrectly. If they do, I let them know about it. I remember an old uncle of mine telling me Rodgers without the D was the “proddy spelling”.

Almost certainly not true but nevertheless it stuck with me and I make a point of correcting anyone who gets it wrong.

( Given my great grandfathers Irish roots I’ll now go and research the family tree in the hope Brendan is my relative:-))
