Fitness gambles can backfire

734

News that Kris Commons had surgery yesterday on a back injury he’s been carrying for months was news to me. Injury and illness hampered Kris at various stages this (last?) season but when he reported back ‘fit’ his form didn’t hit previous heights. Now we know why.

Commons, Scott Brown and Mikael Lustig played through injury for large portions of the season. They are big players for Celtic and the story of our season can be seen through the prism of their situations. Jozo Simunovic was also less than 100% fit for what little we saw of him.

Correctly diagnosing the fitness of each of them will be important to Celtic’s performance next season. If we think Jozo and Scott will be capable of performing at Champions League level and they’re not, you could write the script on how next season will transpire.

The new manager will take a look at Kris’s age, vitals and recent injury record, and will immediately underestimate what he’s likely to get from the player next season. No new manager will rely on having a fit and able Kris Commons, but if fit, he’ll get a player with the craft to help him in Europe and domestically.

Mikael’s persistent hip injuries suggest we need to recruit a right back. There’s insufficient evidence to determine whether Saidy Janko is ready for the task, so we need to find someone who can take the pressure off Mikael’s hips.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the newspaper advertisement about Resolution 12, which will run in The Guardian and a Swiss business ‘paper.  It’s been a remarkable project. You can read more information here.

Here’s hoping, Wasn’t really bothered with Rodgers as I thought he was waiting for England to come calling again. But pretty pumped if it comes true. Season ticket sales will rocket. Could be a big week for us. Need someone in just now, lots to do before we even think about Europe.

Talking about that today, I’d imagine by the time the manager gets in there will be a few away. Had a look today at the first team squad and there was about 10 we should move on. Strikers wise we are very very poor.

    I’d prefer Jockstein.

  12. Get Brendan in, dump the dross, hopefully get a few quid for them, top up the budget and the rise in season books plus CL would cover any shortfall.

Yeah agreement, Think I read Johanson saying he wants to go as well. If he got back to his best I’d keep him. Bitton can go for me as well. Too ponderous. I am not sure about CKR he seems to came onto a game, big guy and does the spade work most strikers hate doing. Mulgrew, Janko and KC not sure about due to injuries and I think Fisher is out of contract in summer.

Lots of decisions needing made before we sign anyone, 40 first team players, that needs to come down a fair bit.

Who is your Captain? Do you keep Brown even though he has been poor.

The quicker the manager is in the better for everyone.

Defo move on, our European qualifiers come very early and with the way our squad is the new man will have his work cut out so for me the time isn’t right for Keane.

And to be honest I’m not overly convinced he would be the right choice anyway.

    KLV,

Not Keane for me, I think he is just out for himself, not really manager material, an assistant is his level i think, He needs someone to keep the ego in check.

If Brendan turns down the post, what will this place be like.

Better at least to try for a big hitter than settle for some mentioned before. In life, like Res12 and the Resolutioners, we can only try.

Hopefully it works out with Brendan Rodgers or a big namebeing appointed.

I had hoped for a continental prestigious manager but whoever is appointed deserves our support.

The anti Celtic bias and bigotry continues unabated in the SMSM and the masonic influences within the governance of the game. Perhaps even at UEFA level P2 has influence but Res12 should open up the can of worms.

Hope for developments within the next 7 or 8 days. HH

I’d be amazed if it was Rodgers, although it would pack the place out next season. He’s too powerful for Lawwell, who needs to be The Man at the club. Look out for Malky Mackay, who we know has been interviewed and whom I think Lawwell will see as capable, cheap, damaged and therefore willing to be subordinate. Hope I’m wrong and would be delighted to be proved so, but regrettably Lawwell rarely exceeds my expectations.

  21. sixtaeseven - Gardez la Foi on

Why can’t we just sign that Joey Barton?

He seems to be the best player never to have graced the beautiful game.,

We could get him at a snip.

However, something tells me that he wouldn’t fit into the “Glasgow Celtic” model.

He is more “Thems” – in the style of Novo, Diouf, Boorareah, Black, Weir, Souness, Greig… the list is endless.

Barton would be protected … like the rest of thems.

Nothing will have changed next season.

Thinking about buying a Tardis … cheaper that a season ticket

I have a sneaking suspicion that Peter wont have the same power next season and I think DD will appoint someone (like rodgers) to make sure Peter can’t step in. We’ll see.

Saying that, Marco McGhee hasn’t done his chances much good after Sunday :-)

  26. Whoever gets appointed, whenever it is, the announcement needs to be accompanied by a proper statement of the medium to long term objectives of the club. Winning the league and ‘doing well’ in Europe are measures of success for a season but not a statement of strategy. Oh, and this should come directly from someone in charge, and we all know that isn’t Peter.

For what it’s worth, Mr Rogers would do me fine. If he’s successful though, he may not be around long as a salary we can’t match will be offered him soon enough.

I did read a funny thing on Sunday night, Guy was saying that Ronnie and McGhee went into the wrong changing rooms, Mark gave his team to talk to Celtic and Ronnie gave his to motherwell and that how we played so well on Sunday. Made me laugh. ;)

I agree entirely re : Bitton…. At 24 and on a new long term contract, if we could attract a 4 million offer we should jump at it. Maybe one of the new Epl clubs Middlesborough or Sheffield Wednesday might see him as a catch.

Johansen….fair enough if he wants to go. The likes of Rogic, Christie, Armstrong can more than fill his boots.

What do we know so far? That Brendan Rodgers is apparently our no1 target. So just a target then. The only source so far is Sky. I’m very hopeful but we need to reign it in a bit, there is a long way to go with this one.
