Fitness gambles can backfire

734

News that Kris Commons had surgery yesterday on a back injury he’s been carrying for months was news to me. Injury and illness hampered Kris at various stages this (last?) season but when he reported back ‘fit’ his form didn’t hit previous heights. Now we know why.

Commons, Scott Brown and Mikael Lustig played through injury for large portions of the season. They are big players for Celtic and the story of our season can be seen through the prism of their situations. Jozo Simunovic was also less than 100% fit for what little we saw of him.

Correctly diagnosing the fitness of each of them will be important to Celtic’s performance next season. If we think Jozo and Scott will be capable of performing at Champions League level and they’re not, you could write the script on how next season will transpire.

The new manager will take a look at Kris’s age, vitals and recent injury record, and will immediately underestimate what he’s likely to get from the player next season. No new manager will rely on having a fit and able Kris Commons, but if fit, he’ll get a player with the craft to help him in Europe and domestically.

Mikael’s persistent hip injuries suggest we need to recruit a right back. There’s insufficient evidence to determine whether Saidy Janko is ready for the task, so we need to find someone who can take the pressure off Mikael’s hips.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the newspaper advertisement about Resolution 12, which will run in The Guardian and a Swiss business ‘paper.  It’s been a remarkable project. You can read more information here.

If as reported DD is going to be more hands on now, Might he pay the managers wage? Has he not done something like this in the past? Robbie keane or bellamy. I might have made that up. ;)

If they are serious about fixing the club and Rodgers is a Celtic fan i’d imagine DD has the ingredients to make something work and if DD want’s him he will get him.

Yeah Armstrong is a cracking player when played in position.

Of all the deadwood there isn’t much money to be made, Jo and Bitton aside and we might get some money for forrest, But wage wise it would free up a few bob.

  3. Canamalar- I think we should aspire to more than ‘decent’ but I don’t set the strategy. Revealing what this is would go a long way to help people understand it.

  4. What would be funny is if Rodgers were to be confirmed this Friday.

If we could get away with it, paraded at Celtic Park on Saturday. Talk about overshadowing a Hibs game.

There’s plenty to be offloaded before Bitton.

Biton can be an asset for us notably in European games.

Can hold the ball in midfield, is a decent passer when we need to keep possession, and can score the odd ares-hole winder (excuse my French).

No, I am not his agent CSC

Apparently the Herald is to print an article claiming that Steven McLean hopes to make up for “last season’s Cup Final howler”. Does that mean he will only award one dubious penalty to his team?? HH

If money was an issue for Rodgers he would not even bother coming to Celtic for an interview.

He knows the club; he knows the resources; he is not delusional.

The only issues to be ironed out would centre around control.

  8. Terrific game in Hull, with Derby taking a two goal lead to claw the aggregate score back to 3-2 for Hull. Johnny Russell playing a blinder in the “Kris Commons,” role. Fantastic footballer.

Can’t agree more with a couple of others on here tonight,Armstrong is a terrific player and has the potential to be huge for us. The way he went at Motherwell was fantastic – controlled but manic aggression all at once if that’s possible. He was brilliant against Inter as well. He has class. Future captain? I’m convinced.

Next captain? Hmm. Not sure. Probably Erik, as I don’t think Broonie is (nor should be) guaranteed a start.

Yeah the Brown one is a toughie. He is our 5iar Cap, He is everywhere advertising wise dafabet and NB. So it a tough one to change, But i also think he has been poor and the nature of his injury won’t just get better. Move Brown and JK to help the reserve team?

He is a poor footballer but he is our Captain.

  15. After the Sheep game Johnny Russell came out with a few of the Celtic players. I said to him was he coming out after signing talks as a bit of a jape and he said “I wish, I would give my right arm”.Although might make him a bit unbalanced.

Really excited about Brendan Rodgers if it happens.I still cant help but feel cautious however.Old enough to remember Bobby Robson prior to Wim being odds on for the job to know disappointments and last minute hitches happen. At least it now looks as if we are serious about appointing a proper manager appropriate for a club of our size.Be a tremendous boost to season ticket sales to get him in soon(not to mention champions league preparation).Says a lot that the SMSM are ridiculing this. You can smell the fear.Onwards to the 10. I believe we have an excellent group of players around the club at the moment & i’m sure any potential manager looking can see that too.

With the removal of the pressure Ronny put on the players with his amateurish talk of trebles &, the overly-intense physical training then God only knows how far they could go with the addition of a Victor Wanyama type work horse in the middle of the park.

As for the wages, anyone coming for an interview will know full well we ain’t in a position to pay top dollar wages.

  23. MANAGERS

When lower management get together on a weekend they talk about

    football.

When middle management are together, they talk about tennis.

When top management meet, they discuss golf.

The obvious conclusion? The higher up you are in management, the

    smaller your balls are

TBH my dream team would have been Martin and Keano but I’d be more than happy with Brendan.

Hopefully , it is a sign that we are getting our ambition backed.

A man like Brendan will not accept the pittance to spend that Ronny did.
