Fletch lives!

335

And we’re back to 2009.  Steven Fletcher was wanted by Celtic in January that year.  The misinformation about why he ended up going to Burnley for £4.5m instead of Celtic is legendary, and we all like a legend, so there is no need to trouble anyone with facts.

The talent Scottish football fans knew he had back then has been confirmed by the 11 years he spent in English football.  If he accepts Celtic’s offer of a contract he will join former Hibernian team mate, Scott Brown, as one of the older members of the squad.

I read some are a bit animated about what this means for the other strikers but I don’t see it moving the dial much.  No first team player will be sold on the back of recruiting a 33-year-old.  If he arrives, we would have a better-than-Lewis-Morgan option in the event all other strikers are unavailable for a cup final or European game.  And remember, it is prudent to have as large a squad as reasonably possible this season; fixtures could be delayed, then come thick and fast.  This is a low risk cover option with no particular strategic importance.

Loving this #9inarow challenge idea; a 9k run is on the agenda later.  Maybe run past a few Darwin Award pubs, if you know what I mean……..

  1. Apropos the Aberdeen FC diagnosis, if ever there was a season where a big squad might be a salvation, it could be this season.

    HH jg

  2. Just seen pictures of a deserted Aberdeen….

It’s not a flag day up there is it?

  3. Did the truth ever come out about the comedy gold sketch involving Alfie, his missus and the private dick under his car? Did the fella ever prove that he was being paid by Señora Morelos? DOn’t recall any charges being made.

Anyone else seen the threads on Twitter than the huns are being financed this season by soft loans from N.Ireland via their DUP connections? No suggestion that it is illegal. Simply that the begging bowl went out and has been generously filled. I assume as they are not listed on any stock exchange, they can do these kind of deals on the quiet.

  4. I’m getting the impression this season might not happen and, if it does, the whole season will be played behind closed doors

  5. where are rangers getting the money? They are spending money they don’t have but will likely get from the sale of morelos and maybe barisic. If it works out, its a good way of doing business and securing your top targets.

Celtic on the other hand – dithering and pondering. I’d tell Ajeti to forget it – he needs a week to think if he wants to play for Celtic? if he’s got doubts I don’t want him anywhere near us!

Remember the Mcginn and Shved situations when BR was manager – this is why he left the club the way he did! The board didn’t support him and push the boat out to get top targets and instead signed wingers he didn’t want or need.

there is a disconnect and it could be our downfall.

  6. Stebhoy

So was it Brendan who told you that was why he left then ?

Maybe Congertons amateur hour recruitment policy had something to do with it.

Although he was actually Brendans man !

Doesn’t fit your ‘Celtic dithering’ narrative eh.

  7. BR left at the time he did because it suited his purpose – EPL and more money. Took most of our backroom staff at a critical time of the season. He lacks a moral compass.

Hate to keep pointing this out but John McGinn chose Aston Villa over us. It wasn’t a question of money because Celtic were willing to match any Aston Villa bid. It came down to the player who decided he’d rather go down south.

John McGinn says that Steve Bruce convinced him because he was told he’d start every week at Aston Villa. He didn’t get those assurances from Brendan Rodgers.

Dithering and pondering? We just signed a multimillion international goalkeeper a week ago. It’s amazing how short people’s memories are.

So they have signed two strikers. So what? There are two months to go in this window and we will be looking to improve the squad.

If Ajeti takes a couple of weeks to make up his mind so be it. He doesn’t owe us anything. Maybe he will miss his chance and rot on the bench at West Ham. We’ll see. It’s never wise to burn bridges unnecessarily.

  9. Pakistan playing well an excellent hundred by Shan – 259 for 5.

    Bet corkcelt is loving this.🤭

  10. Stebhoy,

We got the full house there. Well done.

Rangers ‘good way of doing business’ (yeah right!) whilst Celtic ‘dither and ponder’ (poor old Barkas £5m forgotten about already). All finished off with a hint of Lawell mischief and Rodgers rewritten history.

A boat that never gets pushed out, a wee disconnect and a downfall chaser….

    You are today’s winner !

  11. `The sticking point was always the length of the deal. Celtic wanted a 1 year deal and Fletcher a 2 year deal.`

If this is true, then I am not too bothered that he is not coming to us.

My thinking is that if he ( Fletcher) has belief in himself, he would accept the one year deal believing the other year would be offered at the end of the season when he has shown his calibre.

  12. Rock Tree Bhoy on

I’d give him the 2 yer deal. He wants to come. He would score goals. Much rather sign someone wanting to come rather than somebody who wants time to think it over and then skips the pre-booked medical.

I don’t think we will get him and think we are making a big mistake here.

  13. the villa offer for mcginn came much later in the process – Celtic had him, Rodgers went to his parents house but the board dithered. During that time villa came in – the deal should have been done, end of.

going into this season – rangers look like they have been advance planning. They’ve brought in a much needed center and a couple of strikers and offloaded 1-2 players not wanted. I’m not suggesting their signings are anything special – my point is they appear to be taking this season very seriously.

we need to respond and I expect we will – so far its all ifs buts and maybes. I’m hoping more is going on that the media is not aware of. We need a CB , LB, winger and striker

  14. Rock Tree Bhoy on

Hate to say this but if the ‘we want one he wants two’ rumours are correct – thats the biscuit tin back out.

  15. Stebhoy,

They’ve been preparing for life after Morelos for years now. They went for Roofe in the past but he chose Anderlecht. This idea that they are some paragon of virtue we should be copying is utter BS fella. The guy we are after Ajeti has a much better pedigree than their St Gallen man – caps, goals, market value, etc who has had a crap year at West Ham. Moi had a crap time at Soton but has been and will be quality for us.

Keep the blinkin faith. The club deserve a lot more credit than you are giving them.

  16. Gene. Who are Pakistan playing?.

If it’s England & they are hammering them then I might even turn it on for a few minutes.

  17. ROCK TREE BHOY on 6TH AUGUST 2020 2:52 PM

Hate to say this but if the ‘we want one he wants two’ rumours are correct – thats the biscuit tin back out.

If biscuit tin means getting the best deal for the club, then aye, it’s out. A 33 year old should get a 1 year deal, perform his socks off and then talk about an extension.

  18. our absolute priority must be a center back with areal power – ayer cant jump and our full backs lack height for back post crosses. I like Taylor but concerned about his defending – he doesn’t seem to have the pace to turn and block crosses and lacks physique.

we are a great attacking team but we have weaknesses others will look to exploit if we don’t shore up.

  19. Corkcelt

Yes it’s England – not hammering them it’s only day 2 of 5 day match 😉

    _____

It’s 2020. It’s not about when offers came in.

Villa’s bid was delayed due to a transfer embargo. It was lifted later in the window and they bid immediately.

However, Villa were already talking to Hibs and McGinn prior to the offer. McGinn visited Villa, agreed a contract and had a medical prior to a fee being agreed with Hibs. Aaron Hickey is doing the same with Bayern Munich.

The point is, Hibs knew that there were wealthy Championship clubs interested. They were always going to wait for that interest to come in. The boy had a decision to make and he chose them.

I really can’t listen to this sop story anymore.

  21. btw – I’m ecstatic and grateful about celtics achievements on and off the pitch – but I think its ok to want to continue to improve. We will NEVER see the 10IAR chance in our lifetimes – If any team should be speculating to accumulate , surely it should be us!

  22. I remember the McGinn saga well. Almost to a man everyone here was saying to tell Petrie to feck off, with his hardball.

McGinn was a dyed in the wool Celt, he was going nowhere but Celtic.

There were also many on here saying he wouldn’t improve the team.

In the final analysis Celtic matched Villa, McGinn choose Villa & that was the end of it.ee

It’s all water under the bridge now, all that matters is this window & this season.

We need a left back, a centre half & another Scott Brown only at least 10 years younger,

If we are keeping Eddie, I don’t see a new Striker as an absolute necessity but I still want one,

  23. !!Bada Bing!! on

The Transfer Window open until October is a hindrance re Eddy, a bad start in the EPL by a few clubs, and the cheque books will be out,we will need 2 strikers in IMO.

  24. Are Dithering and Pondering as good as the Huns two new signings? I don’t know but I hope they start up front on Sunday

  25. Transfer Window Scottish Style Guide 2020

    (1) During the window Brendan Rodgers will be reported as set to swoop for Callum MacGregor and Odsonne Edouard Kris Ajer

    (2) Rainjurz FC do not ‘buy’ or ‘sign’ players. They ‘swoop’ for players. The extraordinary nature of these swoops must be emphasised at all times by preceding the word “swoop” with at least one of the following choices – ‘sensational’ ‘stunning’ ‘exciting’ ‘audacious’ or ‘ambitious’.

Note; every time Rainjurz swoop the sheer speed of the swoop will be another example of how they always ‘throw down the gauntlet to Celtic.’

    (3) Celtic FC do not ‘buy’ or ‘sign’ players they ‘finally complete’ deals. The hugely dull nature of this event should be emphasised at all times by using at least one of the following terms – ‘saga’ ‘protracted’ ‘long-running’ ‘drawn out affair’ and ‘dithering’

    (4) Any transfer target of Rainjurz FC is, without fail, also ‘being pursued by a host of Europe’s top clubs’ and never Brighton or Wigan.

Note; Rainjurz will play “hardball’ in every transfer even their Bosmans are staunch signings where inevitably ‘ Gers played hardball but like the Canadian Mounties they always get their man ‘

    (5) Rainjurz must always be referred to as ‘battling it out for the signature’ of this “well rated” ’hot property’ and ‘wanted man’.

    (6) The exact identity of elite club’s will be selected on a random basis but must contain at least one of the current top 4 sides in Italy, Germany and Spain. One of these may be substituted by PSG but no other French club, Barcelona at all times are waiting in the wings to swoop.

    (7) If the said player signs for Rainjurz FC then the club have ‘pulled off a sensational coup’. To avoid unnecessary confusion under no circumstances should the player be asked why he turned down these previously reported top clubs? Instead the player will ‘modestly refuse to comment on the speculation’.

    (8) Any overseas player purchased by Rainjurz FC under the age of 21 years is a ‘wonder kid’.

    (9) Any overseas player purchased by Celtic FC under the age of 21 years is an ‘unknown youngster’.

    (10) In recognition of the club’s international stature it is appropriate that the transfer fees received and paid by Rainjurz FC should initially be quoted in Euros. After this initial use the term of currency quoted should be dropped and thereafter, whenever possible, the figure referred to only by approximate amount.

    (11) Should Rainjurz FC obtain a Scottish player from a domestic rival then this story must be accompanied by a double page spread praising the club’s willingness to invest in home-grown talent and how this is of the benefit to the national side and indeed the country as a whole.

    (12) Should Celtic FC purchase a Scottish player from a domestic rival then this story must be accompanied by a double page spread condemning the club’s willingness to raid rivals of home-grown talent and how this is to the detriment of the national side and indeed the country as a whole.

    (13) Any player linked with Rainjurz FC who has not made a strongly worded denial of the said move should be referred to issuing ‘a come and get me plea’

    (14) Clubs unwilling to lower their asking price to meet the derisory bid placed by Celtic FC must be warmly praised. All stories of this nature must include the words/terms ‘low asking price’ ‘cut price’ meagre player demand ‘ and ‘Celtic low balling, smaller clubs’. The player involved in this deal must be referred to as ‘the reluctant star’ and it is imperative that any story fully informs the reader how the immoral stance of the buying club could ‘ force the unhappy star ’ for a player ‘whose heart is set on another part of Glasgow’.

    (15) Clubs unwilling to up their bid to meet the perfectly reasonable fee placed on a player by Rainjurz FC must be strongly condemned. All stories of this nature must include the words/terms ‘insulting’ ‘laughably derisory bid’ ‘on the cheap’ ‘deliberate attempt to unsettle’ and ‘outrageously low offer’.

(16 )The signing of an overseas player by Rainjurz FC must be accompanied by a two page spread stating how they will become as good as their nation’s most famous footballer. Alex Nosferatu Rae is still willing to contribute to any article.

    (17) The signing of an overseas player by Celtic FC must be accompanied by a two page spread questioning whether they are good enough for the SPL. Kris Boyd is willing to contribute to this article.

    (18) If Rainjurz FC sign a player who has at any point of their career – been watched by any member of the Celtic Park staff (including Superstore employees, programme sellers and outsourced catering workers) then they will have ‘sensationally snatched’ the said player ‘ from under the nose of the Parkhead club’.

    (19) If Celtic FC signs a player who we previously linked with Rainjurz FC then it will be because ‘After initial tentative interest Rainjurz decided to pull out of the chase’ thus ‘leaving the road clear for Celtic’. The player in question ‘..represented poor value for money..’ and ‘was no better than the players already available to the Rainjurz gaffer’.

(20)The fact that Douglas Park is a Billyionaire and not a car salesman are integral elements of any Rainjurz transfer story and failure to recognise this will see copy spiked.

    (21) As in previous years our ‘colleagues’ at the Sunday Mail will again be organising ‘Operation Celtic Manager out ‘ which is as usual planned for the first weekend in February. Our duty is to ensure quality follow-up coverage Kris Boyd will ghost write this years ‘Celtic manager loses dressing room’ piece.

    (22) Rainjurz when trying to scrape every last halfpenny that Douglas Park can lend shall be reported as ‘Repaying the FF brigade for their unrivalled loyalty

    (23) Rainjurz on receiving a flat knockback with an inferior offer, will be congratulated for not breaking their strictly staunch wages cap.

    (24) Celtic will snidely lure players on free transfers.

    (25) Rainjurz will sensationally snare multi million pound rated strikers via the staunch Bosman rule.

    (26) Any Rainjurz players moved on will be ‘unsettled’ or downright lost interest in playing football after fulfilling their lifetime ambition.

    (27) When referring to Seethen Gerrard’s “warchest” its value shouldn’t drop below Jim Traynor’s lifelong supportering guesstimate of £12,000, 000 net.

( 28 ) All impending reported ‘bids’ for El Fluffalo never drop below Level 5 valuation , and any ‘bids’ from the English Championship will also be referred to as coming from ‘top drawer English outfits’ even if its Brighton or Wigan

    (29) Seethen Gerrard will be continually reported as having issued ‘hands off warnings’ for his top stars

    (30) Should any club agree a transfer to sell one of their players to Celtic, and that club issues a statement, as such, there will follow a period of up to a week (or silence). If an agreement on terms, and wages is not reached, then all hell will be unleashed on ‘ Celtic’s flawed wage structure, and or general transfer policy’ with ad hominem attacks on the Celtic ‘biscuit tin mentality’

    (33) Rainjurz in talks with International players shall be referenced as incredibly secret talks, but ALL of these transfers will be so secret, that the transfer fee will be described as £4.25 million MINIMUM regardless of the nature of secrecy. After the secret talks are widely unsecret via copy etc, and Gers have swooped, said previously unheard of international star, who has jetted into Bearsden, the unknown fee will suddenly become ’UNDISCLOSED’

Note: Should Chinese clubs be interested in having secret talks with El Duffalo the secret fee will start at £30M and a top journalist will always be required to say, they’ve ‘seen’ the secret talks email

  27. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

In the previous thread a poster (apologies – cannot recall who) opined about enjoying success.

Celtic have won a treble treble.

We might secure a 4th treble in four seasons.

Over the last 8 seasons we’ve averaged 2.25 trophies per season.

This is a time of UNPARALLELED domestic success.

Our time in the sun is finite.

When it ends, it usually ends right quick.

Just ask Man Utd fans ….

    … or Michael Jamieson.

    Personally, I am lovin’ it.

    Hail hail

  30. BOURNESOUPRECIPE – brilliant! You could add that any Celtic player that is better than his equivalent at rangers has already reached his potential and must move to better his game. Quotes to be supplied by Charlie Nicholas to prove that it is not driven by an anti-Celtic agenda.
