Forrest Feedback Club, Nir ruffling

913

The James Forrest Feedback Club were quiet last night.  I’ve no idea if James will rediscover his form on a sustained basis, or if his limbs will allow him to attain his potential, but it was good to see him running at defenders with confidence again.

He got the measure of John Rankin early on.  Thereafter the United marker could do little more than block James whenever they faced-off.

I’ve been impressed with Dundee United during this series of games.  Fojut held things together remarkably well at Hampden, you can see why we signed him subject to a medical, while Ryan McGowan was clearly their best player at Celtic Park, notwithstanding his late lunge at Liam Henderson.  Well done to McGowan for coming onto Twitter to share apologies and congratulations.

Nadir Ciftci’s swagger reminded me of Jackie Dziekanowski in his latter days as a Celtic player.  He’s probably found his level at United, where he can turn it on at will, but the modern game is looking for something different.

Loved the moment when a fouled Nir Bitton ruffled the hair of his assailant, Aiden Connolly.  Nir is growing by the week, I’m working hard to avoid comparisons.  We’ve not seen much of an edge from him since that, mistimed, tackle against Ajax, but he could do with some of that in-your-face attitude others in the midfield have.

Not been online much since the game, what suspension have the SFA offered Paul Paton after his altercation with Anthony Stokes?

Keep your eyes peeled for a nomad.  They can hide in bins and outhouses.  Check your shed.  Any will do.

I hate for you to have to hear it this way but I am also obliged to point out that, while I’m not anal enough to have kept a copy , you and I had a (pleasant enough ) exchange last year in which you expressed a fairly full and frank view that signing The Cat would prove to an unmitigated disaster.

James skinned Rankin several times, inside and out and put in some very decent balls though your general point about quality of final ball rings true.

What I was most happy to see was the uninhibited free running of this unlucky athlete. Should he remain injury free I’ll feel more inclined to active criticism.

Biton in his early days reminded me of Ki in his early days. Timid but obviously had a good brain.

Now he is looking every bit of the player that Ki turned into. Excellent distribution.

Funny. My son’s only 9 so doesn’t really remember Ki in Hoops. Showed him on YouTube last night.

  8. Justafan – It was late when I got the watch the game last night and I may have missed some of his better work, but I do not recall him skinning the full back at all. He ran past him a few times and won some corners but he wasn’t productive.

I do agree with you that it was good to see him moving freely around the park. Like I said, he probably needs games, but he strikes me as being one dimensional. I don’t think he fits into the Ronny system of pass, move and press football. I expect him to be benched again Saturday.

  9. Taking on and beating defenders is a dying art and most teams and players don’t even try it. Modern game is athleticism/ percentages. Give me the dying breed of Forrest /GMS to watch any day and accept they will lose the ball sometimes.

The derision around Forrest (coming from the stands in the saint Johnstone game) is so unlike Celtic.

  12. AR. It is true that we would wish that our players all were strong in the tackle, etc., like Mc Gowan. But what really annoyed me in the three games so far was his persistent moaning to the referee about every decision and his attempts to have our players booked or indeed red carded. He was giving verbals to Murray as they left the pitch together at half time. I am certain that most of us on here expected that he would be red carded at some point last night. The previous games all pointed to that possibility.

Any way, well done Celtic. Only poor moment was having to tell the so called Celtic fans close to me to desist when they booed JG as he came onto the pitch. Why to they bother to come?

Meanwhile, future forward planning ain’t an SFA strong point.

Hibernian fc currently occupy 2nd spot in the Championship. If this position remains

they play the winner’s of the 3rd & 4th place play off. Should they win the player off which may involve Falkirk, Q of the South or even Sevco they play the final play off against the team who occupy 2nd bottom of the SPL.

The final play off dates are Thursday 28th of May & Sunday31st of May.

Am I correct in saying the Scottish cup final

is on Saturday May 30th ?

    I see trouble ahead.

I have no issue with McNamara and Donnelly doing their best for their current employers but their attitude stinks. Neither were what would be described as Celtic men. McNamara senior is a Hibs man, Donnelly never seemed overly committed to us as a player.

  18. Mncelt & justafan

On the Forrest debate, Mncelt, I agree to an extent. Jf took the opportunity to run at Rankin a dozen times. I was glad to see this. However his moves were predictable, and resulted in corners primarily. That said, it’s progress and signs are, he is at least gaining match sharpness and confidence. My 3 attacking mids for Saturday would be: l to r, Armstrong, Johansen, Forrest

Watched the game last night …..

For a 4-0 victory, we were decent, but not great ….I dont think we really got out of second gear, nor did we have to….. DU were just quite poor …. I know you can only beat what is in front of you, but if that is one of the top teams in Scotland, we have to be honest and say the standard of opposition we are playing is pedestrian.

It showed me that RD’s hardest job is and will be getting the players to play that 100% pressing game all the time, when, frankly, the players know that they dont need to work that hard to win in the SPL.

The problem, of course, is that, in Europe, we will get bombed unless we fully committ to RD’s style, and put in the work that it requires. So, the SPL games need to be treated almost like practice matches for Europe…. you train the way you intend to play. And if players dont commit to the system, then they dont play.

It is a bit like the old spartans …. they were successful because they moved, thought and fought as a unit; each person covered the person to his left. But, if one person didn’t do his job, it left a hole, which jeopardized the whole unit. If 3 players close down, but one doesn’t, it leaves spaces and creates holes into which better teams (like those we will face in Europe next season) can and will quickly and effectively counter-attack.

As for last night, I thought we still lacked the pace and directness we have seen when SA plays … to me, SA combines the engine of SB with the football IQ of NB … even more than SJ, I think SA is the man who enables the rest of the team to play the way RD wants them to play.

SA and NB, if we can hold on to them, are the cornerstones for the team … and young Denayer (if we can hold him).. he is class …

I think JF’s game was improved…. but lets not get carried away. He and AS had a few good moments, but are still some way off the types of games that we know they are both capable of.

I might be in the minority, but I liked to see JG pissed off after the tackle on LH …. I didn’t get the sense he was doing it for the fans … I think he was genuinely pissed off for his teammate …. There is an ego there, for sure .. but also a bit of fire, which we need ….I think if he does stay on, he will become a star for us.

Nir Biton is growing on me but I find the George Connelly comparisons to be way off the mark. As things stand he is nowhere near as good as George Connelly.. George Connelly is one of my five all time Celtic greats. I started that assessment in season 56/ 57

    He certainly was not.

I was right in there with a vengeance. Having championed Mowbray I was not going to let the Maribor debacle go unremarked.

I am delighted Ronny Deila is succeeding, I love his committment. But I’ll reserve the right to withold undying devotion while I admire his progress and fortitude.

The cheerleaders are out in force after succeeding agianst United, as they were after the Aberdeen and first Inter games. But anyone who professes some Nostradamian insight from the start needs to add a little caution; I remember an uneasy silence from the rabble-rousers after the St.Johnstone defeat.

We seem to be building well, components falling into places, but there’s work to be done before expectations get met; truly great sides see it well over the line before dishing out the plaudits. so far, so good.

P.S. I was all for signing The Cat. Goalkeepers coming up for corners was never a qualifying aptitude in my book. ;))

  25. F.A.B. Virgil (WATRC) on

I have no problem with DU as a club or their management or players. They are trying to find a way to beat a team with better players and more resources.

I think Saturday is different. They don’t ‘need’ to win it unlike the cup games. If I was JMac I’d be looking for a formation and tactics that delivered a nil/nil draw. That would motivate the players differently with a different purpose and style.
