Gerrard good appointment for club with short-term challenges

389

Newco have struggled for relevance this season, even among their own supporters, who have been increasingly disengaged.  They are an object of fun domestically and were not quoted outside of Scotland.  Now they are relevant.  They are being discussed in news programmes and by football commentators outside Scotland, and not because of an embarrassing defeat.

The appointment will ensure the renewal of thousands of season tickets that may otherwise not have been purchased, so for the first season, it will self-finance.  For a club with huge short-term challenges, this money he will bring in over the next six weeks makes the appointment of Steven Gerrard as manager a good one.  July’s Europa League qualifiers are a long way off.

This is true even though he has less experience than McCoist, McDowell, Warburton, Caixinha and Murty.  Gerrard has never taken charge of a full team of adults.  He will have no money to compete with Celtic and will need to pitch his tactical brain against Neil Lennon and Derek McInnes next season.  Results will be predictable, you can be assured of that.

Despite his warm welcome yesterday, he is, of course, another Celtic Brother.  This fact will visit him with the vitriol which became familiar during Murty and Caixinha’s reign soon enough.

All of this means we get to dismantle some fantasies next season, just as we did this season and last.  I see no downside.

  1. saw the clip of the mob outside the crumbledome yesterday giving the BB big licks – no doubt if they were abusing those of Jewish or Islam religion then collars would have been felt.

    Correct.

I believe that when Sky showed the clip later, they had reduced the sound and spoke over it. That is fair enough but they should explain to a UK audience why they had to do it.

No chance of that happening though.

    Hail Hail

  3. Celtic provided buses for supporters a couple of years ago to help fans get to CP from surrounding areas. To be fair hardly anyone was going at the time but it can be done if the will is there. Hh

BRTH-12:51pm. I honestly still don’t see him start the season as manager either, and have got a wager on it with my work mate(free lunch),it’s a season ticket scam in my opinion ?

  6. Caught a bit of TalkSport this morning Tony Cascarino and female co-pundit Georgie Bingham.

Warburton came on to talk about the challenge facing Gerrard.

Georgie starts off with “When Rangers were liquidated and reformed as a new club”!!!

Think thats the first time I’ve heard that from a pundit.

  7. You couldnt make the stuff up on RS. Tam Cowan making a case for Sevco being annihilated last week to being a ‘good thing’ for SG. Hh

Wee step for a hint when they introduce the parking restrictions around Celtic Park

    http://www.celticfc.net/pages/gettinghere

Also Celtic Park is within walking distance of 4 train stations Bellgrove Duke Street Dalmarnock and Bridgeton. Why not try and park your cars in Rutherglen Springburn Partick Carntyne etc etc I think that trains from Dumbarton even call at these stations

I am quite sure that those who find it hard to walk even the shortest of distances may benefit from applying for a blue badge which I’m sure will give you some parking privileges closer to the stadium.

If that doesn’t work, for those of you still fortunate enough to have one, bundle the wifey into the motor and let her go shopping at the Forge while you enjoy the fitba, and park in the forge all day if you want

Just heard that Stevie G wanted reassurances that Kriss Commons had moved out of Scotland before he signed on the dotted line

  13. On being asked about Georgie’s comment, the new newclub’s manager said it was a slip of the tongue.

She meant ‘continuated’, ‘remained’ and ‘same’ in Scotspeak.

Don’t know if anybody else posted this earlier but just read this on FF. They are usually good for a laugh but this guy must be a tim at the wind up, or are they really that stupid and ignorant? This guy is talking about dumping 32red cos they are now a global phenomenon and could get a better deal. They dumped £170 million of debt, my money is on someone at the wind up surely. Cue the stupid hun…

“Poor show to renege on the current deal. As Rangers, we should be willing to honour deals made in good faith. By all means offer an extension, but it’s Timmy behaviour to be ripping up contracts when it suits”

I’m uncomfortable with the abuse Steven Gerrard is getting on here. He has never spoken against Celtic, never tried to big himself up, never denied his background. He did have one unsavoury incident in a pub, which obviously has never happened to anyone on this site.

We cannot criticise the Rangers group of clubs for being sectarian, yet in the same breath howl at any Catholic who joins them as Judas.

So I say welcome to Glasgow Stevie, though I hope you get pumped every week.
