Gerrard good appointment for club with short-term challenges

389

Newco have struggled for relevance this season, even among their own supporters, who have been increasingly disengaged.  They are an object of fun domestically and were not quoted outside of Scotland.  Now they are relevant.  They are being discussed in news programmes and by football commentators outside Scotland, and not because of an embarrassing defeat.

The appointment will ensure the renewal of thousands of season tickets that may otherwise not have been purchased, so for the first season, it will self-finance.  For a club with huge short-term challenges, this money he will bring in over the next six weeks makes the appointment of Steven Gerrard as manager a good one.  July’s Europa League qualifiers are a long way off.

This is true even though he has less experience than McCoist, McDowell, Warburton, Caixinha and Murty.  Gerrard has never taken charge of a full team of adults.  He will have no money to compete with Celtic and will need to pitch his tactical brain against Neil Lennon and Derek McInnes next season.  Results will be predictable, you can be assured of that.

Despite his warm welcome yesterday, he is, of course, another Celtic Brother.  This fact will visit him with the vitriol which became familiar during Murty and Caixinha’s reign soon enough.

All of this means we get to dismantle some fantasies next season, just as we did this season and last.  I see no downside.

Funnily enough a Red Lawyer I spoke to a few years ago in Majorrcy more or less said the same thing of John Barnes our great red hope of the time

  2. The Gerrard thing.

It’s good for our game.Sky will be all over this,as will BT.Sky will be wetting their pants.Maybe they will, for a while, take a more serious look at our game.It gives a bit more chance of over the top,not really, glee, when it all comes crashing down.It will raise interest in Englandshire,a bit.Maybe get us a better deal with the TV mobs.More Money for us.Maybe.He has no chance of competing with Brendan. If he gets some money,it will be a fraction of what Celtic have available to give Brendan. And we have already a team.

Anyway, off to watch the Dundee game.I want Dundee to relegate,or nearly,Hamilton. One less plastic park, and gives us the pleasure of grubbing the wee rat 4 times next year.

    It’s all good.

What a wonderful world the press live in.

All this talk of Gerrard and a 2nd Coming for Rangers, the world spotlight will be on Rangers, and Gerrard only has to prove himself in a two horse race — what a crock of shit! (He says in his best Al Pacino Scent of a Woman voice).

Brendan Rodgers, Peter Lawwell, Don Dermot, as someone I know calls him, will all have an eye to improving Celtic for next season and they will be steadfast, professional and determined as you would expect in so doing.

However, what I am really interested in are the thoughts on this one ringed circus of the likes of Neil Lennon, Leanne Dempster, Stevie Clark and his new regime at Kilmarnock, Stewart Milne and McInnes at Aberdeen (BTW Derek will not survive another season at Pittodrie if the results against Rangers are the same as this season), Anne Budge, Craig Levein, Robinson at Motherwell and so on.

Do the press and the brainless pundits honestly believe that because some big name with no experience in management has arrived at Ibrox these people are going to lie down, quake in their boots, be reduced to Jelly and simply sit back and let him succeed?

    Not a chance in hell.

All we have seen so far is what is being described as Box Office!

Box Office has never won a football match other than when Pele scored in the last minute of Escape to Victory and , like Rangers, half that team are now dead!

Box Office? I will give you Box Office.

Morton should appoint Ivan Lendl, Graham Obree, Andy Ritchie and Alex Arthur as their new management team — now that would be Box office!

Watch out for what is happening behind the scenes here because there is a whole crock of hidden shit coming down the pipe and Stevie the Squirrel might never make it to matchday one in my opinion.

    ??????

However, disregarding the free bus passes, you make a good point regarding shuttle buses. The approach should be sooooooooooo much quieter now and this should facilitate more efficient travel to the stadium.

Imo this is the most pressing issue applicable to attending Celtic supporters. It deserves more prominence.

If they really wanted to increase the exposure, they should have appointed Gerrard’s Wife instead

  11. I love mik lustig but right back is the priority recruitment area for me this summer.

Depending on who leaves we may have other positions to fill and a centre half wouldn’t go amiss either.

Time to get Ntcham in some golden handcuffs – that boy deserves a serious pay rise. Edouard has earned the right to have us put a serious bid in.

    Should be an interesting summer.

The scouse mouse arrival will keep our players interested. Our manager will want to slap him down. Whatever increase in revenue he brings the orcs to keep them afloat will also see increased revenue for every other Scottish club. We should be grateful to Sevco for that. Their one meaningful contribution to the game.

Of course if big money is coming in , once the stadium is fixed, the debts are paid etc etc etc it’ll only take about £100 million to overhaul us.

    But aye, that’ll happen.

    My friends in Celtic,

There is obviously discussions that Gerrard and his well paid advisors and legal representatives have had ,that we do not have a Scooby about.

I cannot fathom it, but I admit I’m intrigued.

I personally think Gerrard will never see out his contract before he is binned or mutually consented, however not all ” rookie” managers fail. Zinedine Zidane. Is one that springs to mind. ( And yes I’m aware of budgets )

    HH to all.

What was Killies record in the league since Stevie Clarke was appointed?

Real turn around from 3 points out of a possible 24 …

I haven’t checked back (hard to navigate on an iPhone), but I wouldn’t think it would be that much worse than ours …

I’ll check later, but if so, might suggest that, with the right coach, you don’t need to spend big money to win in scotland

  14. Read John James on Gerrard just now, this was all in the Irish media at the time, one thing about Ireland, they are not afraid to call people out.

A match made in hell, they will hopefully burn together.

  15. GREENPINTA

Zidane was a coach of Real B so a little different than being a youth coach.

He did improve them from 6th to 1st in the two seasons there.

Gerrard has a win record of 40% with Liverpool under 18’s but perhaps Liverpool only focus on development rather than wins?

It looks like a move to sell season tickets by glibby.

For Gerrard there seems no clear reason other than being a first team coach but nothing is beyond the hun criminals especially in the best wee country so like you i’m curious to see what unfolds in the coming weeks.

  16. Jobo Baldie on

Has Mr Gerrard actually taken over the reins or is it Jimmy Nichol till the season end?

I’m trying very hard to think of a response other than an obvious GIRUY. After all,you really deserve no less. But,turns out my Dad is entitled to a bus pass. Had it for a few years, since he’s 79yo.

It doesn’t entitle him to a bus to the stadium, old bean. Not at all,he still has a bit of a walk. Which at his age isn’t that easy

  18. The Huns are like that idiot at the party that everyone knows will make a show of themselves before the night is out. On this occasion the eyes of the English MSM will be on them and make no mistake they will show themselves up. Warburton, Murty et al may have went quietly but i don’t think Gerrard will if they throw him to the wolves in similar fashion.

That reminds me of when I moved back home-well,Prestwick-for the Centenary Season. Life wasn’t entirely straightforward, but my attendance was pretty much full on,every Celtic fan was doing their best to attend as many games as possible.

The local team,Ayr United, were drawn v Hearts in the cup. Mick, can you help us out, drive a minibus to Edinburgh? Twelve of us,go on.

We know we’re gonna get beat, but we just want to be there.

That. That is being a supporter.

  25. One good thing, imo, came out of the national BBC’s coverage of the coming of Gerrard: they at least twice mentioned the deid team’s liquidation. Somehow, I doubt that word would have been part of BBC Scotland’s fawning.
